"description": "Daily Maverick is an independent online news publication and weekly print newspaper in South Africa.\r\n\r\nIt is known for breaking some of the defining stories of South Africa in the past decade, including the Marikana Massacre, in which the South African Police Service killed 34 miners in August 2012.\r\n\r\nIt also investigated the Gupta Leaks, which won the 2019 Global Shining Light Award.\r\n\r\nThat investigation was credited with exposing the Indian-born Gupta family and former President Jacob Zuma for their role in the systemic political corruption referred to as state capture.\r\n\r\nIn 2018, co-founder and editor-in-chief Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic was awarded the country’s prestigious Nat Nakasa Award, recognised for initiating the investigative collaboration after receiving the hard drive that included the email tranche.\r\n\r\nIn 2021, co-founder and CEO Styli Charalambous also received the award.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick covers the latest political and news developments in South Africa with breaking news updates, analysis, opinions and more.",

Thabo Bester escape as early as October 2022 but failed to act\r\n
No trace on databases
\r\nDuring the lengthy media briefing on Friday, it became clear that much like GroundUp’s work exposed Bester’s prison break, Home Affairs was eventually able to solve the mystery relating to his background thanks to media coverage of the scandal.\r\n\r\nMotsoaledi explained that there were three databases of people who were in this country legally.\r\n\r\nThese were the:\r\n
\r\n \t
National population register where births, deaths, identification, and passports of South African citizens were recorded.
\r\n \t
National immigration identification system that recorded asylum seekers and refugees.
\r\n \t
Visa adjudication system that covers anyone in South Africa with any type of visa.
\r\n
\r\nMotsoaledi said that when news of Bester’s prison escape broke, Home Affairs officials realised they were involved in the broader matter and so tried to find Bester and Magudumana on their databases.\r\n\r\nOnly two Thabo Besters were found on the national population register, but neither was the prison escapee.\r\n\r\nMotsoaledi said “we found nothing” on the other two databases.\r\n\r\n“He simply did not exist on our systems,” Motsoaledi later added.\r\n
Tracking an alias
\r\nBester had also gone by the name TK Nkwana, so when Home Affairs officers had no luck in tracing Thabo Bester, they turned their attention to that name.\r\n\r\nMotsoaledi said 16 individuals matched it on the national population register, but based on photographs of them, none were Bester.\r\n\r\n“We were very stuck,” he said of the process of trying to trace Bester’s identification.\r\n\r\nA woman who said she was Bester’s mother, Maria Meisie Mabaso, was subsequently interviewed in the media.\r\n\r\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAZ8ngj1_vI\r\n\r\nMotsoaledi said Home Affairs officials tracked her down and spoke to her — “she insisted she’s the mother of Thabo Bester.”\r\n
Proof of birth
\r\nShe said she had given birth to him on 13 June 1986 at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Johannesburg.\r\n\r\n“Indeed, we rushed [there] and checked their archives,” Motsoaledi said.\r\n\r\nThe archives showed he had been born there to one Meisie Bester (the surname Mabaso had used at the time along with the first name she also used).\r\n\r\nMotsoaledi said the situation was confusing, though, because Mabaso had four children but only three were on the national population register.\r\n\r\nThe fourth — Thabo Bester — was not.\r\n\r\nMotsoaledi explained that this was because of Mabaso’s history.\r\n
Family matters
\r\nShe was born in 1965 with another surname altogether — neither Bester nor Mabaso — and her birth was not registered at Home Affairs.\r\n\r\nHer own mother, Bester’s grandmother, was born in 1938 as a Bester.\r\n\r\nThe grandmother had been a domestic worker and according to Mabaso: “She loved white children more than her own children.”\r\n\r\nIn 2002 the grandmother died.\r\n\r\nOnly then did Mabaso get registered at Home Affairs and she took on the surname Mabaso as it was her aunt’s.\r\n\r\nShe also registered her three other children under that surname.\r\n
Disappearing act
\r\nMotsoaledi said Mabaso had not registered Bester at Home Affairs because in 2002 when she and her three other children were registered “Thabo was 16 and he’d disappeared.”\r\n\r\nMeanwhile, Bester was enrolled at Laerskool Danie Theron in Johannesburg on 14 January 1997 under the name Thabo Bester (it appeared his mother’s employer had done this.)\r\n\r\nNo birth certificate was used to enrol him, simply his date of birth was provided.\r\n\r\nIn 2002, the same year his grandmother died and when he was in Grade Five, Bester left school.\r\n
US passport mystery
\r\nMotsoaledi said Bester never had an ID document, any passport of his own and may not have had any bank accounts.\r\n\r\nWhen he was detained in Tanzania last week, he was found with a US passport in the name of Tom Williams Kelly.\r\n\r\nMotsoaledi said it was not yet clear if this was a legitimate or fraudulent passport.\r\n\r\nIt was not used to cross South Africa’s border.\r\n\r\nIn the case of Magudumana, Motsoaledi said she was easily found on Home Affairs databases.\r\n\r\nShe obtained her first passport in 2007 when she was 19 years old.\r\n
Crossing the border
\r\nIt expired in 2017 and she was issued with an updated one set to expire in 2027.\r\n\r\nMotsoaledi said she used the updated passport to leave South Africa via the Beitbridge Border Post on 9 May last year and three days later she returned from Bulawayo via OR Tambo International Airport.\r\n\r\nThe passport was not used again.\r\n\r\nWhen she was arrested in Tanzania, though, Magudumane was found with that passport plus two passports in the name of Mmereka Patience Martha "description": "Convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester and his accomplice Nandipha Magudumana were extradited to South Africa from Tanzania on 13 April 2023. They were on the run for almost a year.\r\n\r\nIn October 2022, the Inspecting Judge for Correctional Services, Justice Edwin Cameron wrote to Minister of Correctional Services Ronald Lamola:\r\n\r\n“There are indications that, with the collusion of G4S employees and others, a fire was staged in the single cell of one Thabo Bester (the notoriously named so-called ‘Facebook rapist’) and a corpse was smuggled into the cell with the objective of faking inmate Bester’s death and facilitating his escape.”\r\n\r\nBester was arrested in Tanzania along with his associate Nandipha Magudumana on 7 April, eleven months after his escape. But it appears that efforts to apprehend him only started on 24 March.\r\n\r\nThis was after details of Bester’s escape were uncovered by GroundUp.\r\n\r\nAccording to a source who worked at the prison at the time of Bester’s escape, the cell where Bester was kept was on the second floor of the prison. Next to this cell, there is a door that leads down to the exit. “It seems that he would have been able to escape through those doors,” the source said.\r\n\r\nThese doors can only be opened by the control room, the source explained.\r\n\r\nBester has been widely dubbed the \"Facebook rapist\" by the media. He used the social media platform to lure women with claims that international modelling scouts were interested in them.\r\n\r\nHe would then rape them and rob them using a knife. He also murdered at least one of his victims.\r\n\r\nIn 2012, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for these crimes.",

\r\nIt expired in 2017 and she was issued with an updated one set to expire in 2027.\r\n\r\nMotsoaledi said she used the updated passport to leave South Africa via the Beitbridge Border Post on 9 May last year and three days later she returned from Bulawayo via OR Tambo International Airport.\r\n\r\nThe passport was not used again.\r\n\r\nWhen she was arrested in Tanzania, though, Magudumane was found with that passport plus two passports in the name of Mmereka Patience Martha of that, in 2019, Ntshani had applied for a new passport that was issued.\r\n\r\nMotsoaledi said that on 27 March Ntshani approached police saying she had given it to Magudumane and a man known as TK Nkwana (the alias Bester adopted), and she was worried what they would use it for as she had read news about them and the prison escape.\r\n
Violation of a dead body
\r\nMeanwhile, court cases relating to Magudumana and Bester have started developing.\r\n\r\n<span
