"contents": "<a href=\"https://www.iaa-mobility.com/en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IAA Mobility</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the largest trade fairs in the world. It’s one of two exhibition events (the other being </span><a href=\"https://www.iaa-transportation.com/en/visitors/iaa-2022/about-the-iaa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IAA Transportation</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) that comprise The </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, known in English as the German International Automobile and Smart Mobility Expo. The show used to be called the Frankfurt Motor Show, but this year was the second time that it has taken place in Munich.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fair, which ran from 5 to 10 September, was rebranded at the previous event in 2021 to no longer focus specifically on automobiles, but rather more generally on technological advancements and products relating to mobility and transport; but for now, cars are still dominating the space. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it’s still the largest auto show in Europe, the scale of the event and the pool of participating car manufacturers has shrunk compared to previous years. On the other hand, the number of exhibitors in </span><a href=\"https://www.iaa-mobility.com/en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">newer fields</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as renewable power sources has increased. (Photo: EPA-EFE/Anna Szilagyi)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>China dominated the fair</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chinese manufacturers dominated IAA this year more than ever before. There were about 70 Chinese firms exhibiting, second only to the Germans themselves. </span><a href=\"https://www.vw.com/en.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volkswagen</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (VW), which used to take up entire halls to showcase its models, used about </span><a href=\"https://www.dw.com/en/chinese-carmakers-flex-muscles-at-germanys-iaa-auto-show/a-66727872\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,500 square metres</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> — less than their Chinese rival </span><a href=\"https://www.byd.com/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build Your Dreams</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (BYD). </span><a href=\"https://www.dw.com/en/electric-cars-chinese-carmakers-outpace-german-giants/a-66444153\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BYD exceeded VW’s sales</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last year, largely because of the government’s </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-09-14-did-europe-just-start-a-trade-war-with-china-over-electric-cars/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significant subsidising</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of its battery-electric vehicles, (BEVs).</span>\r\n<h4><b>Highlights of IAA 2023</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BYD flexed its new market dominance at the fair, exhibiting a range of six new models meant to premier in Europe, including the Dolphin compact car, which is to be sold at an entry price of below €30,000, which few EV manufacturers can match. Their competitive edge comes largely from the </span><a href=\"https://www.dw.com/en/ev-batteries-can-the-west-catch-up-with-china/a-65321039\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">efficiency of their batteries</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which don’t use cobalt or nickel. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1850952\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/11695924.jpg\" alt=\"BYD Seal car\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" /> <em>People have a look at a BYD Seal car on display at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Munich, Germany on 5 September 2023. (Photo: EPA-EFE/Anna Szilagi)</em></p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volkswagen introduced the </span><a href=\"https://youtu.be/bMERyOqUpNA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ID GTI</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> — a compact electric vehicle designed for daily use with a central controller inspired by a golf ball. (Photo: EPA-EFE/Ronald Wittek)</em></p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bosch is developing a </span><a href=\"https://www.bosch-mobility.com/en/mobility-topics/software-defined-mobility/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">centralised IT and electronic architecture</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for software-operated vehicles that allows for wireless software updates. Over-the-air software updates increased the recyclability of batteries and other vital components in electrically operated vehicles. The model incorporates a new heads-up display spanning the width of the windshield as part of its BMW iDrive infotainment system, which integrates real and virtual worlds. The electric SUV features a user-friendly digital interface and a sophisticated digital assistant. It will be available in several configurations, including purely electronic and internal-combustion drivetrains, as well as rear- and four-wheel drive systems. With an 800V electrical architecture, the car can be charged with rapid DC at up to 250kW. Its bi-directional charging capabilities suggest it could be geared towards either vehicle-to-home, vehicle-to-grid, or vehicle-to-appliance tasks. It’s one of two exhibition events (the other being </span><a href=\"https://www.iaa-transportation.com/en/visitors/iaa-2022/about-the-iaa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IAA Transportation</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) that comprise The </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, known in English as the German International Automobile and Smart Mobility Expo. The show used to be called the Frankfurt Motor Show, but this year was the second time that it has taken place in Munich.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fair, which ran from 5 to 10 September, was rebranded at the previous event in 2021 to no longer focus specifically on automobiles, but rather more generally on technological advancements and products relating to mobility and transport; but for now, cars are still dominating the space. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it’s still the largest auto show in Europe, the scale of the event and the pool of participating car manufacturers has shrunk compared to previous years. On the other hand, the number of exhibitors in </span><a href=\"https://www.iaa-mobility.com/en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">newer fields</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as renewable power sources has increased. There were about 70 Chinese firms exhibiting, second only to the Germans themselves. </span><a href=\"https://www.vw.com/en.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volkswagen</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (VW), which used to take up entire halls to showcase its models, used about </span><a href=\"https://www.dw.com/en/chinese-carmakers-flex-muscles-at-germanys-iaa-auto-show/a-66727872\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,500 square metres</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> — less than their Chinese rival </span><a href=\"https://www.byd.com/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build Your Dreams</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (BYD). </span><a href=\"https://www.dw.com/en/electric-cars-chinese-carmakers-outpace-german-giants/a-66444153\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BYD exceeded VW’s sales</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last year, largely because of the government’s </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-09-14-did-europe-just-start-a-trade-war-with-china-over-electric-cars/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significant subsidising</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of its battery-electric vehicles, (BEVs).</span>\r\n<h4><b>Highlights of IAA 2023</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BYD flexed its new market dominance at the fair, exhibiting a range of six new models meant to premier in Europe, including the Dolphin compact car, which is to be sold at an entry price of below €30,000, which few EV manufacturers can match. Their competitive edge comes largely from the </span><a href=\"https://www.dw.com/en/ev-batteries-can-the-west-catch-up-with-china/a-65321039\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">efficiency of their batteries</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which don’t use cobalt or nickel. </span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1850952\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1850952\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/11695924.jpg\" alt=\"BYD Seal car\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" /> <em>People have a look at a BYD Seal car on display at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Munich, Germany on 5 September 2023. (Photo: EPA-EFE/Ronald Wittek)</em>[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bosch is developing a </span><a href=\"https://www.bosch-mobility.com/en/mobility-topics/software-defined-mobility/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">centralised IT and electronic architecture</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for software-operated vehicles that allows for wireless software updates. Over-the-air software updates increased the recyclability of batteries and other vital components in electrically operated vehicles. The model incorporates a new heads-up display spanning the width of the windshield as part of its BMW iDrive infotainment system, which integrates real and virtual worlds. The electric SUV features a user-friendly digital interface and a sophisticated digital assistant. It will be available in several configurations, including purely electronic and internal-combustion drivetrains, as well as rear- and four-wheel drive systems. With an 800V electrical architecture, the car can be charged with rapid DC at up to 250kW. Its bi-directional charging capabilities suggest it could be geared towards either vehicle-to-home, vehicle-to-grid, or vehicle-to-appliance tasks.
