"description": "Daily Maverick is an independent online news publication and weekly print newspaper in South Africa.\r\n\r\nIt is known for breaking some of the defining stories of South Africa in the past decade, including the Marikana Massacre, in which the South African Police Service killed 34 miners in August 2012.\r\n\r\nIt also investigated the Gupta Leaks, which won the 2019 Global Shining Light Award.\r\n\r\nThat investigation was credited with exposing the Indian-born Gupta family and former President Jacob Zuma for their role in the systemic political corruption referred to as state capture.\r\n\r\nIn 2018, co-founder and editor-in-chief Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic was awarded the country’s prestigious Nat Nakasa Award, recognised for initiating the investigative collaboration after receiving the hard drive that included the email tranche.\r\n\r\nIn 2021, co-founder and CEO Styli Charalambous also received the award.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick covers the latest political and news developments in South Africa with breaking news updates, analysis, opinions and more.",

"contents": "By the end of this weekend, we will know who, between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, will win the 2021 Formula 1 Drivers’ World Championship.\r\n\r\nThe two drivers will go into the final race in Abu Dhabi equal on points. Whoever wins the race wins the championship. But if both of them are unable to finish, owing to a crash or a malfunction in either vehicle, it is Verstappen who will lift the coveted title, on a technicality. The Red Bull driver has had more wins this season than the seven-time world champion, Hamilton.\r\n\r\nIf Verstappen wins he will break Mercedes’ consecutive winning streak since 2017. Of course, Hamilton is the more successful and experienced of the two drivers. He is also more level-headed than the erratic 24-year-old.\r\n\r\nWith both drivers on equal footing and with equally capable cars, it will boil down to skill and mettle on the part of the drivers.\r\n\r\nOf course, a sprinkle of good fortune could also land any of the drivers on the podium.\r\n\r\nIf Hamilton wins he will not only beat Michael Schumacher’s record seven championship wins; he will also equal another of the German great’s records of five consecutive wins.\r\n\r\nBut competition is good. No one should feel entitled to the top position – lest it breed arrogance.\r\n\r\nThe same kind of arrogance that we have seen displayed by local politicians in recent years.\r\n\r\nNot only did the ANC believe that it could govern “until Jesus returns”, but the party also behaved as though it was entitled to govern South Africa.\r\n\r\nHowever, the 1 November local government elections taught the governing party a few tough lessons.\r\n\r\nSo, whatever happens in Abu Dhabi, a winner will be crowned on Sunday.\r\n\r\nAt least for me, the Formula 1 title race has been a welcome reprieve. It has helped one escape the world of Covid-19 trauma and destruction. But it has also been a welcome change from our tumultuous political environment.\r\n\r\nHowever, that respite won’t last for long.\r\n\r\nAs things stand, we will usher in 2022 with a lot of issues carried over from the current year.\r\n\r\nThe first thing to deal with will be the delivery of the much-awaited Zondo Commission report on 1 January.\r\n\r\nThe government has announced that Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo will hand over his report to President Cyril Ramaphosa on New Year’s Day.\r\n\r\nThat will set in motion a number of follow-up investigations and possible prosecutions.\r\n\r\nBut the big question is whether the National Prosecuting Authority has the necessary capacity to carry out those investigations.\r\n\r\nThe appearance of National Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Shamila Batohi before the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services on Wednesday did not leave MPs convinced that the prosecutorial body has the skills and wherewithal to fight corruption.\r\n\r\nFurther compounding the issues is the recent departure of Independent Directorate head Advocate Hermione Cronje.\r\n\r\nWhoever takes over from her will first have to familiarise themselves with the investigations currently in their in-tray.\r\n\r\nAt the time of writing this column the cities of Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni had yet to announce their mayoral committees as the parties squabbled over positions.\r\n\r\nAt hand is the DA’s insistence on not only having the mayoral chains but also the lion’s share of the positions by virtue of being the bigger party in the possible coalitions.\r\n\r\nThe DA won the mayorship of the Gauteng metros with the support of parties like the EFF, ActionSA and FF+.\r\n\r\nWith the exception of Tshwane, the DA had fewer votes than the ANC in the other two metros and therefore the argument that it should be calling the shots in the coalition governments is disingenuous. Driven by the common goal to punish the ANC, the smaller parties backed the DA in these crucial municipalities. The least the DA should do is to make some concessions.\r\n\r\nUppermost in the minds of the DA leadership should not be proving who is mightier than the other, but rather demonstrating to the voters in these metros that another party can do better than the ANC.\r\n\r\nSo far, the blue party has been driven by greed and arrogance.\r\n\r\nFor a party in decline, the DA would do well to demonstrate a modicum of humility – perhaps learn from the ANC.\r\n\r\nThe governing party was also made to eat humble pie in Parliament this week when it failed to muster enough support for an amendment to the Constitution to allow for the expropriation of land without compensation. It is back to the drawing board.\r\n\r\nThese lessons in politics are also relevant to sports.\r\n\r\nThis is why, despite being a Hamilton fan, I believe seeing Red Bull at the podium will be good for Formula 1. Change is good and healthy. DM168\r\n\r\nSibusiso Ngalwa is the politics editor of Newzroom Afrika and chair of the South African National Editors’ Forum.\r\n\r\nThis story first appeared in our weekly Daily Maverick 168 newspaper which is available for R25 at Pick n Pay, Exclusive Books and airport bookstores. "description": "Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa is the fifth and current president of South Africa, in office since 2018. He is also the president of the African National Congress (ANC), the ruling party in South Africa. Ramaphosa is a former trade union leader, businessman, and anti-apartheid activist.\r\n\r\nCyril Ramaphosa was born in Soweto, South Africa, in 1952. He studied law at the University of the Witwatersrand and worked as a trade union lawyer in the 1970s and 1980s. He was one of the founders of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), and served as its general secretary from 1982 to 1991.\r\n\r\nRamaphosa was a leading figure in the negotiations that led to the end of apartheid in South Africa. He was a member of the ANC's negotiating team, and played a key role in drafting the country's new constitution. After the first democratic elections in 1994, Ramaphosa was appointed as the country's first trade and industry minister.\r\n\r\nIn 1996, Ramaphosa left government to pursue a career in business. He founded the Shanduka Group, a diversified investment company, and served as its chairman until 2012. Ramaphosa was also a non-executive director of several major South African companies, including Standard Bank and MTN.\r\n\r\nIn 2012, Ramaphosa returned to politics and was elected as deputy president of the ANC. He was elected president of the ANC in 2017, and became president of South Africa in 2018.\r\n\r\nCyril Ramaphosa is a popular figure in South Africa. He is seen as a moderate and pragmatic leader who is committed to improving the lives of all South Africans. He has pledged to address the country's high levels of poverty, unemployment, and inequality. He has also promised to fight corruption and to restore trust in the government.\r\n\r\nRamaphosa faces a number of challenges as president of South Africa. The country is still recovering from the legacy of apartheid, and there are deep divisions along racial, economic, and political lines. The economy is also struggling, and unemployment is high. Ramaphosa will need to find a way to unite the country and to address its economic challenges if he is to be successful as president.",
