This time her celebrated</span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Performance_art\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and sometimes controversial performance art</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involved the consecration of a secular wishing tree. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a </span><a href=\"https://www.sowetanlive.co.za/sundayworld/lifestyle/2018-05-24-larger-than-life-wonders-in-nature/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report in </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sowetan</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yoko’s ‘Wishing Trees of Hope’ project was:</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“inspired by her childhood visits to the temple where she wrote her wishes on a thin piece of paper and tied it around a tree. (Photo: Mark Heywood)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wishing Tree has a feeling of peace about it and after several hard years for the human race, it’s clear from its fruit of parched notes that wishing, dreaming and hope are still very much part of a human’s emotional make-up. For this tree, like a latter-day Santa Claus, is still gathering wishes. In fact, its branches, and those of several nearby trees, are weighed down by little brown notes laden with wishes. In winter they look like leaves; in summer they are hidden in the foliage.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wishes are usually private things. But these ones hang in public. So on a recent visit, I took the liberty of writing a few down. They are shared because, in this time of war and vitriol, they capture the simplicity of our desires.</span>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I wish I cold be a good boy”</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I wish Covid-19 would stop”</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I wish my leg cramps would go away”</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I wish that there was peace in the world and I wish to get a new puppy for my dog”.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I wish to make my dad proud.”</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I wish for peace and freedom for Ukraine.”</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I wish to live the rest of my life with the true love of my life.”</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I wish for wholeness, a clear mind, love, joy, prosperity, a house, car and a happy meaningful life.”</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Please South Africa end poverty + hunger respect one another”</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I wish my mum shall have the best life.”</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I wish to be able to write letters, numbers and hearts and all the things I can’t yet do”</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I wish I could meet Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alvarez and Novak Djokovic”</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I wish for a family of six and house and car to fit us all”</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I wish that I won’t be hated anymore I wish that my dad will come back (I wish for powers)”</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I hope I get a dirtbike”</span></p>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are but a few of thousands of wishes.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1360430\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/MC-The-Wishing-Tree-MJH_1.jpg\" alt=\"Wishing tree. \" width=\"720\" height=\"476\" /> Wishing tree. But for long before we acquired this knowledge trees have often played a role in the human imagination and therefore literature. Think of the simplicity and poetry of </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hmTc9rm8-o\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shev Silverstein’s </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Giving Tree</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the ill-fated </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lorax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truffula trees in Dr Seuss’s </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lorax</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; think of the lone tree centre stage in </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waiting for Godot</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; or of the fig tree that is the central character in </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-09-23-rescue-remedies-for-an-equality-of-pain-a-review-of-apeirogon-the-island-of-missing-trees-and-rescue/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elif Shafak’s </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Island of Missing Trees</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who reflects that “loneliness is a human invention. Trees are never lonely.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This modest tree, to which children and adults have revealed the nakedness of their wishes and hopes, seems no exception. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1360436\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/MC-The-Wishing-Tree-MJH_7.jpg\" alt=\"Clouds gather to form a heart above the wishing tree. But for long before we acquired this knowledge trees have often played a role in the human imagination and therefore literature. Think of the simplicity and poetry of </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hmTc9rm8-o\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shev Silverstein’s </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Giving Tree</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the ill-fated </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lorax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truffula trees in Dr Seuss’s </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lorax</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; think of the lone tree centre stage in </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waiting for Godot</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; or of the fig tree that is the central character in </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-09-23-rescue-remedies-for-an-equality-of-pain-a-review-of-apeirogon-the-island-of-missing-trees-and-rescue/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elif Shafak’s </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Island of Missing Trees</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who reflects that “loneliness is a human invention.
