"description": "Daily Maverick is an independent online news publication and weekly print newspaper in South Africa.\r\n\r\nIt is known for breaking some of the defining stories of South Africa in the past decade, including the Marikana Massacre, in which the South African Police Service killed 34 miners in August 2012.\r\n\r\nIt also investigated the Gupta Leaks, which won the 2019 Global Shining Light Award.\r\n\r\nThat investigation was credited with exposing the Indian-born Gupta family and former President Jacob Zuma for their role in the systemic political corruption referred to as state capture.\r\n\r\nIn 2018, co-founder and editor-in-chief Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic was awarded the country’s prestigious Nat Nakasa Award, recognised for initiating the investigative collaboration after receiving the hard drive that included the email tranche.\r\n\r\nIn 2021, co-founder and CEO Styli Charalambous also received the award.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick covers the latest political and news developments in South Africa with breaking news updates, analysis, opinions and more.",

I don’t want to kiss you, either. Well, at least not yet.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was a strange expression in her eyes. A new expression. No longer seductive, but friendly. Had she been seductive before? She was looking at me with fondness, like a beloved sister.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“One day, we will kiss,” she said. “One day, when I am ready to take you. But that time is still in the future. In the meantime…”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now the eyes were fading too.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I just want to live on this island with you and your friends. I want to be your constant companion. I want to watch over you and make sure you fulfil your destiny,” Death said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My lips were dry.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Thank you,” I whispered.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, only the mouth remained.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Today is the beginning of your destiny,” the mouth said, before disappearing like the rest of her. “The first Friday of the rest of your life. Go, and live it.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then, with a tiny little ‘popping’ sound, like two lips smacking together, the whole mirage vanished.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was when God started barking, and ran right past me to where Death had been standing, but there was nothing left to bark at. </span><b>DM</b>",
