"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Tuesday 24 January, the official nominations for the 2023 Oscars were announced by hosts Allison Williams (star and executive producer of </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-01-17-m3gan-an-ai-doll-designed-to-watch-listen-and-be-a-childs-best-friend-until-it-starts-to-kill/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M3GAN</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and Riz Ahmed (nominated for best actor in 2021 for his role in </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-04-30-this-weekend-were-watching-sound-of-metal-a-film-about-deafness-humility-and-the-acceptance-of-life-altering-change/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sound Of Metal</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and co-writer of </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lzz50xENH4g\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Long Goodbye</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, winner of Best Live Action Short Film in 2022). </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Oscars themselves will be awarded on 12 March, hosted once again by Jimmy Kimmel.</span>\r\n\r\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhdaLnKMJHA\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spectacular multiversal sci-fi, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-05-20-everything-everywhere-all-at-once-is-a-dazzling-must-watch-sci-fi-spectacle/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything Everywhere All at Once</span></i></a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the deserving leader of the pack with 11 nominations, followed by the Irish dark comedy, </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRu3zLOJN2c\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Banshees of Inisherin</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the Netflix World War I epic </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hf8EYbVxtCY\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All Quiet on the Western Front</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which both received nine nominations. For the most part, nominations went as expected, but the few surprises were pretty drastic upsets.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Best Picture</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The contenders for the most anticipated award at the ceremony this year is particularly dominated by big mainstream productions. The list includes both of the highest-grossing films for 2022: </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-12-15-avatar-the-way-of-water-once-again-extraordinary-technical-wizardry/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avatar: The Way of Water</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-05-27-top-gun-maverick-a-stunning-feat-of-us-propaganda/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Top Gun: Maverick</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making 2023 the first time ever that two sequels are in the running for Best Picture. The absence of their kindred spirit, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-11-18-black-panther-wakanda-forever-review-say-namor/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Panther: Wakanda Forever</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, opened the door for a few edgier candidates, including </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-12-12-triangle-of-sadness-review-shooting-fish-in-a-barrel-and-serving-them-on-a-silver-platter/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triangle of Sadness</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a scathing satire of the rich, and </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD0mFhMqDCE\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women Talking</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a drama based on a repressive religious Bolivian community.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Janet Yang, President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, opened the nomination ceremony by noting that “nominees in most categories are chosen by their peers – actors nominate actors, film editors vote for the best edited movies of the year… But the final and most anticipated award, Best Picture, is chosen by the entire academy membership – that’s around 10,000 filmmakers and artists living and working in over 80 countries.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It’s looking like your best bet to take it home is </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything Everywhere All at Once</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not just because it received the most awards but because of its extremely wide appeal. Still, it’s anyone’s guess – </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Banshees of Inisherin</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a more typical winner in this category and has been very well received. The winners of this category in the past two years were both women: Jane Campion won in 2022 for </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRDPo0CHrko\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Power of the Dog</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a lengthy Western about toxic masculinity, and Chloe Zhao won in 2021 for </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sxCFZ8_d84\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nomadland</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a character study about a woman traveling the US in a van. South Africans may notice that Bill Nighy’s nomination is for his performance in </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2L8CP31-14\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living</span></i></a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (also nominated for best adapted screenplay) directed by brilliant director, <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-03-19-moffie-a-brutal-and-beautiful-film-of-innocence-lost/\">Oliver Hermanus</a>, who directed </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-03-19-moffie-a-brutal-and-beautiful-film-of-innocence-lost/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moffie</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2011-07-24-skoonheid-a-film-that-confronts-truths-both-beautiful-and-ugly/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skoonheid</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2L8CP31-14\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A surprise nomination was Brendan Fraser, whose career as a leading man in action flicks was cut short by health issues.
