"description": "Daily Maverick is an independent online news publication and weekly print newspaper in South Africa.\r\n\r\nIt is known for breaking some of the defining stories of South Africa in the past decade, including the Marikana Massacre, in which the South African Police Service killed 34 miners in August 2012.\r\n\r\nIt also investigated the Gupta Leaks, which won the 2019 Global Shining Light Award.\r\n\r\nThat investigation was credited with exposing the Indian-born Gupta family and former President Jacob Zuma for their role in the systemic political corruption referred to as state capture.\r\n\r\nIn 2018, co-founder and editor-in-chief Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic was awarded the country’s prestigious Nat Nakasa Award, recognised for initiating the investigative collaboration after receiving the hard drive that included the email tranche.\r\n\r\nIn 2021, co-founder and CEO Styli Charalambous also received the award.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick covers the latest political and news developments in South Africa with breaking news updates, analysis, opinions and more.",

The Turing Test poses the question, “Can machines think?” \r\n\r\nThe idea is that a machine could be presumed to think if it exhibits an intelligence that a human might think was actually human. However, unless specifically investigated, researchers and developers may be unaware of the biases in the data fed to the algorithm(s).\r\n\r\nOn 29 March 2023, many prominent AI researchers, engineers and entrepreneurs signed an open letter calling for a six-month pause on developing AI systems more capable than OpenAI’s latest GPT-4 language generator. Instead, companies have accelerated their efforts to build more advanced AI. Elon Musk, one of the most prominent signatories, didn’t wait long to ignore his own call for a slowdown. Eventually, over about a century, a regulatory system for medicines was developed. Although it is expensive, most people believe its benefits outweigh the costs.\r\n\r\nOn 17 May 2023, Sam Altman, then with OpenAI; Christina Montgomery of IBM, and New York University professor Gary Marcus met with the US Congress on regulating AI models.\r\n\r\nThey unanimously recommended that AI should be regulated on a global level, but at the same time, they don’t want AI regulation to slow down development or innovation.\r\n\r\nThey suggested regulations that included forming a new agency that licenses any effort above a particular scale of capabilities and can take that licence away and ensure compliance with safety standards. It is unclear when such regulations will be implemented, if ever.\r\n
Alliance with AI
\r\nOur entire civilisation, everything that we value, is based on human intelligence. \r\n\r\nIf we have access to a lot more intelligence, then there’s no limit to what humans can do. Yet, there is a fear that AI systems, once highly advanced, could operate beyond our control, potentially causing unintended harm or making morally problematic decisions. \r\n\r\nThis uncertainty may tell us that our relationship with AI is just as meaningful as the relative intelligence of the machine itself.\r\n\r\nAs the use of artificial intelligence grows and spreads throughout society, how do we feel about it making decisions on our behalf? Let us approach this question with a healthy scepticism of these systems and opportunistic confidence. Not with fear.\r\n\r\nCalling everyone to stop innovating and winding each other up about what may go wrong seems pointless. Instead, let us focus on our alliance with AI globally.\r\n\r\nBeing sceptical of AI-sourced information and setting regulations on a global level – sooner rather than later – can help mitigate the risks and bring structure to a seemingly uncontrollable tech world.\r\n\r\nStructure gives confidence. DM\r\n\r\nLisa Esterhuyzen is a lecturer in the Department of Business Management at Stellenbosch University.
