It is connected to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) perpetrated against very young adolescents. It is an issue confronting most low- and middle-income countries and is often being misleadingly framed as “teenage pregnancy”. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nedu Raymond from Buzz South Africa suggests that </span><a href=\"https://buzzsouthafrica.com/teenage-pregnancy-in-south-africa/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">girls aged 15 to 19 account for about 11% of childbirths worldwide</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At least 95% are from low- and middle-income countries where there are </span><a href=\"https://www.changecarefoundation.org/2021/08/20/highest-teen-pregnancy-rates-worldwide/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forced adolescent marriages</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and soldiers deployed to end war sexually abuse and rape women and young girls. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Africa has classified SGBV as the second pandemic after Covid-19. However, mainstream culture has normalised sexual exploitation of teenage girls and has labelled them “sugar babies”, making them more vulnerable on social media where “sugar daddies” prey on them. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The </span><a href=\"https://www.lawforall.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/LAW-FOR-ALL-Infographic_Teen-Pregnancy_27-05-2019-04-1.jpg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">top three factors</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in teenage pregnancy in South Africa are: </span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>“Peer influence” from classmates, their romantic partners and mainstream culture;</li>\r\n \t<li>Lack of communication with parents about sex; and</li>\r\n \t<li>Lack of access to contraceptives and sexual reproductive health rights and sexual reproductive health services knowledge.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another reason could be financial reliance on their partners. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In South Africa, the “sugar baby-sugar daddy” phenomenon places girls and young women in danger and at risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Their body autonomy is stripped away. In South Africa, sometimes high school girls are targeted and sexually exploited by sugar daddies. One such case reported in the media emerged in </span><a href=\"https://www.iol.co.za/capeargus/news/concern-over-sexual-exploitation-and-abuse-of-young-girls-in-parklands-fd17315f-03c8-46ff-b810-e829b8132a07\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parklands, Cape Town.</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These acts are criminal offences, as the Sexual Offences and Related Matters Amendment Act (2022) clearly defines sexual grooming and child prostitution as crimes. Moreover, these are also violations of the Constitution and the rights of the child. (Photo: Gallo Images / Brenton Geach)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The justice system needs to be strengthened to prosecute those who exploit vulnerable girls, especially perpetrators who engage children under the age of 16. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cases should be fast-tracked through special community courts that give priority to such cases and there should be a focus on reparation and victim mental health and wellness support. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers, caregivers and parents of teenagers can work with civil society organisations, government departments and activists in reducing teenage pregnancies by raising awareness of issues concerning gender-based violence and sexual health.
