"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An interview with South African hip-hop artist and ex-convict Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye on </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/podcastwithmacg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Podcast and Chill with MacG</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, flighted on 3 December, has highlighted the need to tackle gender-based violence in South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jub Jub said during the podcast interview that Amanda du-Pont was one of the girls he “smashed”. He also revealed other details of his former relationship with the actress.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Podcast and Chill is a YouTube channel owned and hosted by MacG (Macgyver Mukwevho), a broadcaster and former radio DJ.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jub Jub’s comments during the interview have caused a backlash.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Gender-based violence is an ongoing epidemic in South Africa. While more and more women are speaking out, they are still being shamed and blamed... their alleged predators excused,” said Sabrina Walter, founder of Women for Change. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Du-Pont responded to the controversial interview with her version of events. In a video on her </span><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/p/CW--RIOovU1/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram page</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the actress claimed that Jub Jub had repeatedly raped her over a period of two years.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three other media personalities, </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/MKhumalo___/status/1466529311528214529?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1466529311528214529%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.news24.com%2Fchannel%2Fthe-juice%2Fnews%2Famanda-du-pont-and-masechaba-khumalo-accuse-jub-jub-of-rape-20211203\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masechaba Khumalo</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/p/CW_XbxvsixJ/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonokuhle Nkala </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Refilwe Khumalo, have since come forward on social media with similar allegations against Jub Jub.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of the women, including du-Pont, has laid rape charges against Jub Jub. However, du-Pont’s lawyer, Mabulenyana Marweshe, has told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that she intends to press charges soon.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jub Jub has declined to comment on the allegations. “Concerning the accusations levelled against me by Amanda and others, I have decided to make room for the law to take its course,” he said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mosa Zengele of </span><a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/groups/2734434563453840?_rdc=1&_rdr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kwanele Holekane kaGBVF</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an anti-GBV movement, commended du-Pont on speaking up. “She opened the door for other women to tell their stories. I fully support them.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Namuma Mulindi from </span><a href=\"https://genderjustice.org.za/our-work/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonke Gender Justice</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said, “How this whole debacle started should not be overlooked. It felt like a ‘men’s locker room’ chat was aired in public with no consideration for how this would affect the person being discussed. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“In this day and age, we would hope men would be more aware of the harmful nature of such conversations and how it influences negative bravado in young men looking to brag about a ‘score’,” said Malindi.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MacG has also come under fire for broadcasting the comments and being “insensitive” to gender-based violence in the country. Some took to Twitter to call for MacG’s podcast to be </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/search?q=CANCEL%20PODCAST%20WITH%20MACG&src=typed_query\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cancelled</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“MacG’s podcast has never respected women, ever!” wrote </span><a href=\"https://ayandathabethe.com/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ayanda Thabethe</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a South African actress, television presenter and model.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://twitter.com/philile_luthuli\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philile Luthuli</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a graduate in event management from Durban, said: “The fact that MacG opens such a platform for guys to speak </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kanje</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about women and also entertain the whole thing is disgraceful.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“It’s that sloth MacG that is a problem! Don’t cancel the podcast, cancel MacG!” </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/YoloDana_/status/1466775438424956936\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yolokazi Dana, a lifestyle blogger. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responding to the backlash, MacG said on the </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ay0nG8muXo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">latest episode</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on his channel that “we are uncancellable”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“This platform was built on authenticity and telling your story the way you want it, uncensored and unfiltered. That was the case with the Jub Jub interview. We asked questions in our style or wording. Jub Jub responded the way he did,” said MacG.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Du-Pont hit back at Jub Jub, </span><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/tv/CW--RIOovU1/?utm_medium=copy_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">posting a video</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on her </span><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/p/CW--RIOovU1/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram page</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Jub Jub you didn’t smash me, you forcefully opened my legs and forced yourself on me numerous times for two years. Please don’t make it sound like a relationship because I was afraid to leave. You made me believe my life would be in danger if I spoke up. What I did wrong in the past was brush off the abuse under the carpet to avoid drama but that ends here. I will not be publicly ridiculed by this criminal,” she said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She encouraged anyone who had been abused by MacG or Jub Jub to come forward.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McG has since sent du-Pont a lawyer’s letter demanding that she desist from posting “defamatory statements” about him on social media. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Du-Pont’s lawyer said MacG had also been given notice that he would be included in legal action taken by her client. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a subsequent </span><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/p/CXJFBlOsDQC/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram post</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Jub Jub apologised to du-Pont for the hurt and </span><a href=\"https://www.sowetanlive.co.za/news/south-africa/2021-12-06-jub-jub-apologises-for-humiliating-amanda-du-pont-says-the-law-will-deal-with-rape-allegations/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">humiliation</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he had caused her during his interview with MacG. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jub Jub has since been suspended as a host on </span><a href=\"https://mojalove.co.za/about-us/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moja Love TV</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which wrote on </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/MojaLoveTv/status/1466514857767882752\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social media</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “Jub Jub conducted the interview on Podcast and Chill with MacG</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which aired on Channel O, in his personal capacity. Moja Love is not associated with the content thereof. As a channel, we don’t condone any gender-based violence in any way. We have decided to suspend Jub Jub.”</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> approached Jub Jub for comment via family spokesperson Andile Ngcobo, who promised to assist, but has not provided any response.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jub Jub was </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5ELOI0i_yE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">convicted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of murder in 2012 after four children were killed and two others left seriously injured when he and a friend, Themba Tshabalala, ploughed into the victims while drag racing. In 2014, the conviction was changed to culpable homicide and an initial sentence of 20 years was reduced to 10 years, two of which were suspended.
