But how do these memes and popular culture references relate to the US election campaign?</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following last year’s</span><a href=\"https://time.com/6290606/barbiecore-trend-history/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> “Barbiecore”</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> theme, social media posts this year are all about neon lime green and</span><a href=\"https://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2024/07/kamala-harris-brat-memes/679205/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being “brat”</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The trend emerged from the new album of the same name by British pop singer Charli XCX.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many social media users have adopted the album cover art (black Arial font on a neon lime green background) as a meme (a popular and shareable cultural idea). According to</span><a href=\"https://www.tiktok.com/@charlixcx/video/7386786386298342688?is_from_webapp=1&web_id=7326907923145197099\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Charli XCX</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the meaning of “brat” is to be “that girl who is a little messy and likes to party… Who feels herself but maybe also has a breakdown… is very honest, very blunt, a little bit volatile”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harris has become associated with the meme over the past few weeks. But it was not until Charli XCX posted her endorsement of the sentiment (</span><a href=\"https://x.com/charli_xcx/status/1815182384066707861\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“kamala IS brat”</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) that the “brat” posts about Harris really took off. The campaign appeared to be keenly aware of the trend and created a header image for the new “kamalahq” X account in the style of the album cover.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2297846\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Conversation-Kamala-brat-inset.jpg\" alt=\"Kamala Harris\" width=\"1417\" height=\"931\" /> <em>kamala HQ: Kamala Harris’s campaign account on X.</em></p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the “brat” traits do not necessarily fit Harris in her public persona, the trend could still be effective for her campaign, as many voters like to imagine politicians’ private lives and personas in evaluating a candidate to support. For instance, many people consider whether they would like to</span><a href=\"https://www.washingtonpost.com/gender-identity/when-did-we-decide-the-best-presidential-candidate-is-the-one-youd-want-to-have-a-beer-with/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> grab a beer with a candidate</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> – a measure of the candidate being down to Earth or relatable.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among gen Z and younger millennials, it is not so much about wanting to have a beer with a candidate, but rather about having fun with a candidate. That Harris is considered “brat” among these voter groups is high praise for the vice-president.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Coconut tree</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coconut and palm tree emojis reference a</span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNIvR1wqYu8&ab_channel=TheWhiteHouse\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> speech Harris gave at the White House</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2023 in which she quoted her mother speaking about younger generations. In the clip, Harris is seen laughing as she recounts how her mother said: “You think you just fell out of a coconut tree? You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Harris’s campaign account has referenced part of the viral clip in its bio – “providing context” – the vice-president and her team have been carefully avoiding any references to coconut trees. Some social media users have expressed disappointment at this, suggesting Harris should more explicitly acknowledge and embrace the meme. But the current campaign strategy may be the more effective and strategic choice.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meme emerged organically on social media without prompting from the campaign and has developed into a rallying cry and show of support for Harris. Supporters have started to include the emojis in their display names or bios, creating a symbol of community and a visual representation of the support the vice-president enjoys among prospective voters.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Harris were to acknowledge or use the meme now, it may halt the momentum. The actress </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPgLU8IDNTI&t=2s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">famously played Harris</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL) during the 2020 campaign and is expected to reprise the role this year.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SNL has been subject to renewed popularity over the past two decades, with the</span><a href=\"https://electionstudies.org/data-center/2020-time-series-study/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2020 American National Election Study</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealing that Americans were more likely to watch SNL than many traditional news programmes.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research on the influence of</span><a href=\"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/14789299221100339\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> political comedy</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has shown that young people in particular are more likely to</span><a href=\"https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/usappblog/2023/05/16/why-the-writers-strike-matters-for-the-2024-election-and-for-us-politics/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> learn about candidates</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from programmes such as SNL than from traditional news during campaigns. So SNL and other comedy programmes have become a</span><a href=\"https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/usappblog/2024/02/06/the-2024-elections-nikki-haleys-snl-appearance-may-have-given-her-a-strategic-advantage-on-the-campaign-trail/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> popular platform</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for presidential candidates, providing the means to make their case to voters in a fun, down-to-Earth way.</span>\r\n<h4><b>A ‘meme-ified’ campaign?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harris appears keenly aware of the SNL effect. In 2020, she teamed up with Rudolph for a fundraising event. So it wouldn’t be that surprising to see Harris on SNL this autumn – perhaps dancing to the song Femininomenon by Chappell Roan, which has become </span><a href=\"https://www.billboard.com/culture/politics/kamala-harris-campaign-chappell-roan-campaign-video-1235737353/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an anthem in “fancams”</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fan videos) about her on TikTok.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether she embraces it explicitly or not, the meme-ification of Harris’s campaign has significant potential to make a positive impact on her campaign. While the emojis and neon lime green headers have created a visual representation of community, the attention on the memes has also prompted news media coverage.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of immediately discussing her family life,</span><a href=\"https://academic.oup.com/joc/article/70/1/114/5761879\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as is often the case for female candidates</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reports about the campaign now seek to explain the popularity of coconut trees and “brat summer”.
