Kidnapped Eastern Cape business leader Kelvin Naidoo ‘rescued alive’ in early hours — police

Six days after he was kidnapped when he arrived at work, Nelson Mandela Bay business leader Kelvin Naidoo was “rescued alive”, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana confirmed this morning.

Police would release the details of Naidoo’s safe return later.

“There is confirmation that Kelvin Naidoo was rescued alive, details will follow shortly,” he said.

Naidoo (51) – who is also deputy president of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber – was kidnapped last Friday morning at about 6am from battery manufacturer Auto X’s factory on Lindsay Road, Korsten in Gqeberha.

He had arrived at the factory in his black Mercedes-Benz.

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said that, as Naidoo approached the factory an Nissan NP200 bakkie bumped into his car, forcing him to stop. Another bakkie stopped behind him and five suspects wearing balaclavas got out.

They pulled Naidoo from his vehicle, forced him into the bakkie and drove off, leaving the NP200 and Naidoo’s car at the scene.

The police later found out that the bakkie had been reported as hijacked in Motherwell in June.

A demand for ransom in return for Naidoo’s release was made a few hours later. The investigation was taken over by the Hawks soon after. DM

This is a developing story.

This is great news! One wonders though, who are the masterminds behind these kidnappings, are they all part of the same syndicate or are they acting independently? It would seem that PE has a problem with kidnappings of late. Perhaps the SAPS or Hawks or both could form a task team for this.

This illustrates what is possible when the SAPS go about their task in a truly professional manner and Mr Naidoo and his family will be so grateful for the diligence and effectiveness of the police personnel who achieved this welcome outcome. Let's have more successes. Welcome home Kelvin!

Great news!! And well done to SAPS for this. Please tell us you also have solid leads to the kingpins behind this? Could this be part of the ISIS funding syndicate? One wonders.

Thank goodness, a happy ending. Well done to those who made it happen. Must have been an awful experience for Mr Naidoo.

What good news!

Someone involved in threat assessments for top corporate figures in SA told me that kidnappings for ransom are now common and go largely unreported, either by the media or to the police. Makes sense that we would become more like the other basket cases where this sort of thing has been common for decades.
