Photo: Supplied</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This vessel had a Panama flag, but it is not clear whether it was the one raided on Monday.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A source with ties to policing, speaking anonymously given the sensitivity of the subject, said if the cocaine had been destined for the Western Cape the break in supply caused by the bust could spark friction among local gangs trying to muscle into the cocaine market gap.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saldanha Bay has been the scene of massive cocaine busts in the past.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some of the biggest incidents, 155kg or R325m worth of cocaine was </span><a href=\"https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/cocaine-worth-r325m-found-on-ship-from-brazil-69521\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reportedly discovered on a ship from Brazil</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in August 2011. Photo: Supplied</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported that </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-11-28-escobar-mans-narcos-styled-life-how-a-cuban-drug-lord-ran-a-global-cartel-from-the-safe-haven-of-south-africa/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuban drug lord Nelson Pablo Yester-Garrido</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who apparently used to work with Colombian cartel kingpin Pablo Escobar, was jailed for five years in the US – after having spent roughly two decades in South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He had been arrested in South Africa in April 2011 after cocaine worth an estimated R400-million was discovered in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). It was believed to be from Paraguay and destined for Mozambique.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This matter against him was withdrawn in 2013 under seemingly strange circumstances.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, aside from the deep inroad into cocaine networks, the Mandrax trade was recently also dealt a significant blow, based on allegations by the State.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About two weeks ago, six men, including Jerome “Donkie” Booysen, were arrested in Cape Town in connection with </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-02-18-two-court-cases-start-unravelling-the-tangled-web-of-cape-towns-criminal-underworld/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mass Mandrax dealing</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said it was believed they were “the primary distributors of illegal drugs in the province”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booysen and his five co-accused face 96 drug-dealing charges, and the indictment against them showed they were accused of crimes relating to the Mandrax trade, covering February 2013 to November 2017.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They allegedly dealt in tens of thousands of tablets.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booysen has also been charged in a second case – the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-01-10-charges-against-murdered-steroid-king-reveal-a-global-web-of-crime-cases/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">murder of international steroid kingpin Brian Wainstein</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, known as the Steroid King, who was killed in his home in Constantia, Cape Town on 18 August 2017.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booysen is charged in this case along with 15 other men, including controversial figure Mark Lifman.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another suspect in the case, William “Red” Stevens, suspected of having been a high-ranking 27s gang member, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-02-03-underworld-suspect-shot-dead-one-week-before-scheduled-court-appearance-in-cape-town-for-murder/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was murdered</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 2 February.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These two cases, involving Booysen, are expected to reveal details of recent alleged underworld activities in Cape Town and further afield. </span><b>DM</b>",
