Lessons from the township taxis: invaluable insights on dedication, efficiency, customer relations, and delegation

Growing up, my mornings weren’t greeted by the serene chirping of birds, like in the movies. 

Rather, they started with the buzzing sounds of taxis revving up from as early as 3.30am. These taxis weren’t just vehicles; they were a statement to the township that their drivers were ready and eager to take us to our destinations.

I remember one taxi, the “Blue Train”, painted in stunning sapphire with spotless seats and a welcoming interior. This taxi set itself apart, earning bookings beyond the daily commute and standing out from the competition. Another, the “Condor”, dressed in vibrant green with shiny chrome accents, was equally distinctive.

These taxis, and the industry they’re a part of, play a vital role in South Africa’s economy. They ferry about 80% of the workforce from the townships to their jobs daily, supporting ancillary industries like tire and brake manufacturing.

As a young person from the township, these taxis taught me invaluable lessons that I’ve carried into my entrepreneurial journey. Here are four key takeaways:

• Dedication: Taxi drivers show incredible commitment, working from early morning till late at night, sometimes even sleeping in their vehicles to be ready for the next day. Their dedication to their livelihood is something all entrepreneurs should emulate.


• Speed and efficiency: A taxi won’t leave the rank until it’s full, and drivers have mastered the art of navigating quickly to maximise their earnings. This efficiency in operation is something businesses should strive for – finding the fastest way to deliver without compromising on service.


• Customer relations: The saying “the customer is always right” doesn't always hold true in a taxi. Respect and consideration are paramount. For instance, starting the day with a large banknote can disrupt a driver’s cash flow. As entrepreneurs, we must ensure we understand and respect our customers while also setting clear boundaries.


• Delegation: Taxi drivers know they can’t do everything alone. Passengers in the front often help collect fares, teaching us the importance of delegating tasks to operate effectively. And let’s not forget compassion – often drivers, despite the hardships of their job, show kindness, like the times they allowed me to ride even when I couldn't pay the fare.
