"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under grey Cape Town skies a crowd of about 50 people walked to Parliament with rainbow flags and posters, demanding an end to hate crimes against queer people. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking to</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharie Sefale, a project manager from the Triangle Project, an NGO that advocates for queer rights, said the protest was sparked by the recent murders of </span><a href=\"https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2021-04-13-justiceforlulu-heres-what-you-should-know-about-andile-ntuthelas-murder/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andile Lulu Ntuthela</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a gay man from the Eastern Cape, this month and </span><a href=\"https://www.iol.co.za/capeargus/news/suspect-17-arrested-for-murder-of-gay-man-lonwabo-jack-killed-on-his-birthday-9dabfdaa-4f2c-4206-bb0c-890178c2ffd6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lownabo Jack</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a 22-year-old gay man, in Nyanga a week later.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the group reached Parliament, the majority sat down and sang while about 15 formed a line in front and lit candles of remembrance for those who have died. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addressing the group, Unathi Dikani, from the Triangle Project, said: “We’re not here because we have nothing better to do; we’re here because we want to be seen. We also have rights that need to be respected.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pumeza Runeyi from Access Chapter 2 urged the protesters to also support other cases where queer people have been murdered: “There are lots of other cases that we need to support and follow up on. (Photo by Gallo Images/Brenton Geach)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/LHR_SA/status/1385178066188738560\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joint statement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by various queer rights organisations said: “Over the past two and a half months South Africa’s LGBTQI+ community has been rocked by a series of brutal hate crimes against its members… At least six lives – that we know of – have been snuffed out in cold blood.” </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They included Nonhlanhla Kunene, whose body was found half-naked in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg last month, and Sphamandla Khoza, who was beaten, stabbed and had his throat slit on 29 March in KwaMashu, Durban.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sefale told</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Daily Maverick </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the protest wasn’t only about the recent murders in South Africa, but “to also show solidarity” with queer people across the continent – including in Kenya where they are being targeted in </span><a href=\"https://www.newframe.com/queer-refugees-in-kenyas-block-13-pray-for-safety/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Block 13</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a refugee camp that houses 100 LGBTQI+ asylum seekers. </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 15 March a petrol bomb hit Block 13 – not the first time queer people in the camp had been targeted.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-902419\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/OD-MC-Karabo-transgenderMar_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1974\" height=\"1010\" /> Protesters in Hanover Street on their way to Parliament during the End Queer and Trans Hate Campaign on April 26 2021.
