Ahead of a key Premier League battle between Liverpool and Manchester City on Sunday, the two teams had contrasting outings in the latest round of European Champions League action.

Clashes between Liverpool and Manchester City have become the must-watch match in the Premier League over the last few years.

The two teams have constantly fought for supremacy in the league, with City generally coming out on top. As evidenced by the fact they’ve won four league titles in a row.

Another factor which has added to the marquee status of the fixture is the friendly rivalry between managers Pep Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp. However, with the latter having left Liverpool last season, Guardiola has lost his favourite sparring partner.

Nevertheless, since stepping into the massive shoes of Klopp, Dutch tactician Arne Slot has proven to be a particularly sharp thorn in Guardiola and City’s side so far.

Currently the Reds, who are perched in first place, enjoy an eight-point lead over the reigning English champions City in the Premier League.

Though, with only 12 matches played, it is still too early to predict the final destination of the league crown — a win for Liverpool over second-placed City would be a massive statement of intent. Especially considering that Guardiola’s charges are currently on a six-match winless streak, five of those being losses.

On Tuesday, in the Champions League, they appeared poised to finally snap this winless streak as they led Dutch side Feyenoord (which Slot was coaching before Liverpool) 3-0 with 16 minutes to spare in the match.

Uncharacteristically, the 2023 European champions capitulated to gift Feyenoord a surprise comeback.

The Dutch club earned a point after their inspired fightback saw the match conclude three-all.

“It will be a tough season for us and we have to accept it. We lost a lot of games lately, we are fragile and we needed a victory. We were playing at a good level, but the first time something happened, we had problems. I don’t know if it is mental,” Guardiola said after the Feyenoord draw.

Solidified their spot

By contrast, Liverpool’s fifth European outing under Slot saw them man-handle reigning European champions Real Madrid at Anfield Stadium. The Reds’ 2-0 win meant they solidified their spot at the summit of the 36-team league phase in Europe’s premier club competition.

Liverpool are the only team with a perfect record, with five games played in this eight-match segment of the Champions League. The victory over Madrid highlighted the fact that Slot’s men are genuine contenders in both the Premier League and Europe.

In spite of the different paths Liverpool and City find themselves walking form-wise, the Reds are not taking their rivals lightly ahead of Sunday’s mammoth battle.

“Man City have not been on the best run at the moment, but what a team,” said Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher, who has held the fort admirably since the club’s No 1, Alisson Becker, suffered a hamstring injury at the beginning of October.

“So we’re going to expect a really tough test again and it’s important we keep winning in the (domestic) league as well to keep that gap,” Kelleher added.

Salah saga

Liverpool star and perpetual top scorer Mohamed Salah recently spoke about the uncertainty of his future. The Egyptian attacker’s contract at Liverpool expires at the end of the current season.

This means if nothing changes, with the January transfer window, he can begin negotiations with other teams.

However, after starring with a brace as the Reds edged Southampton 3-2 in the league over the weekend, Salah hinted that his wish to remain in Merseyside, but added that the club has not moved to make this a possibility to date.

“We are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay at the club. I’m probably more out than in,” said Salah.

“I love the fans and the fans love me. But it’s not in my hands. Let’s wait and see,” he added. “I’m very professional. Everybody can see my work ethic. I’m just trying to enjoy my football, and I will play at the top level as long as possible.”

With Salah being such an influential figure in the Liverpool dressing room, Slot has had to field questions around how his contract situation has the potential to be disruptive for the high-flying Reds.

The Dutchman dismissed it ahead of the Madrid match, saying: “The only thing I can say is, if I look at my lineups, Mo is more in than out. The players are focused on the short-term… There is no distraction for him, the players, and definitely not for me.”

As wounded City comes into view for the Reds, Slot’s men will have to be as sharp as the left foot of Salah has been since he moved to Merseyside in 2017. DM
