One of the country’s biggest magazine groups, Caxton, announced the closure of its entire magazine section on Tuesday. Titles include </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bona, Country Life, Food & Home, Rooi Rose </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Your Family. </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-05-05-the-economic-lockdown-has-pushed-another-magazine-division-over-the-edge/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tim Cohen</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> writes, the longstanding decline of South African media has been aggravated by the lockdown and has proved fatal in more cases than one.</span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-621182\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/Daily-Digest-Press.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2240\" height=\"1631\" />\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early childhood development centres also face closures. Parents are struggling to cover the fees and it is feared that the centres will have to close without urgent government intervention. As </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-05-05-early-childhood-development-sector-faces-major-closures-as-parents-scramble-for-fees/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vincent Cruywagen</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports, up to a million children could be stranded by the time the centres are due to open in September.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, businesses listed on the National Treasury’s publicly inaccessible Central Supplier Database have been the target of a scam, according to an investigation by </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amaBhungane</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The businesses were contacted by people claiming to be health department officials and offering tenders for a non-existent sanitiser machine. </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemma Ritchie, who</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spoke to a </span><a href=\"https://subscriptions.touchbasepro.com/t/d-l-miuurz-wyddjiihl-n/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">business owner</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost caught in this trap, explains what to do when faced with a </span><a href=\"https://subscriptions.touchbasepro.com/t/d-l-miuurz-wyddjiihl-p/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suspicious-sounding official</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and how and why </span><a href=\"https://subscriptions.touchbasepro.com/t/d-l-miuurz-wyddjiihl-x/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scams</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are rising.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A “concerned group of professionals” headed by actuaries has sent a report to President Cyril Ramaphosa which shows that a continued, restrictive lockdown will damage the economy and create a “humanitarian disaster to dwarf Covid-19”. As </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-05-05-actuaries-warn-ramaphosa-of-a-humanitarian-disaster-to-dwarf-covid-19-if-restrictive-lockdown-is-not-lifted/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terry Bell</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> writes, the report says that if the restrictions are not lifted immediately, they might cause 29 times more deaths than the measures aim to prevent.</span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-621181\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/Daily-Digest-Extinction.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"595\" />\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Africa’s football leaders have been asked to submit a return-to-play proposal for Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa to consider. As </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-05-05-glimmer-of-hope-for-the-re-emergence-of-sa-football/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Craig Ray</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> writes, Mthethwa revealed that the ministry is engaging with a number of sporting bodies which contacted the ministry to “plead their case”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communities affected by mining must be given a chance to comment before the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy publishes guidelines on safety during the Covid-19 pandemic. This was the order of the judge in the Johannesburg Labour Court after weeks of advocacy and litigation on the part of civil society organisations. As </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-05-05-mining-affected-communities-to-be-included-in-government-talks-about-safety/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estelle Ellis</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> writes, community organisations had voiced concerns that the communities faced a catastrophe as mines gear up again.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Department of Public Works has come under scrutiny for its lack of transparency about the Covid-19 quarantine facilities it has chosen. The Committee on Public Works heard that one facility in Mpumalanga was “appalling” and an appeal had been made for the names and locations of other sites to be made known so that the committee could have more oversight visits. Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has voiced his concerns once again of the risk posed to the province when people travel there from the Western Cape to attend funerals.
