"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whoo boy, there has been a lot of dust, and I am certain that it has not settled yet. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the chronology of events is well known, here it is in the tiniest nutshell.</span>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1) The <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-11-20-openai-taps-ex-twitch-ceo-to-lead-as-altman-joins-microsoft/\">board of OpenAI fires Sam Altman</a> for entirely unclear reasons. It makes some statement like him being ‘less than candid’, which illuminates nothing. Major investors in the company are not timeously informed. </span></p>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tech commentators are stunned. </span>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2) Then Altman comes back to <a href=\"https://openai.com/\">OAI</a> for a board meeting, rumours of his re-hiring are rife. He leaves the building immediately after. Then (within hours) OAI announces that they are hiring another guy to run the company.</span></p>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tech commentators are stunned. </span>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3) Then (within hours, again) Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft announces that he has hired Altman as CEO of a new AI research unit. </span></p>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tech commentators are stunned. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are so many strands to this story, that it is difficult to know where to begin, so let’s start at the end, with Satya Nadella hiring Altman to run a new AI unit. When someone like Altman (and his wingman ex-OAI president Greg Brockman) are suddenly on the open market, it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for any investor. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here’s how I imagine it went down when Nadella called Altman: </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">‘Hey, Sam, it’s Satya here”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Hey ‘bro, how’s it hanging?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Some few days, huh?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“You think?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“What the hell happened?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I want to move fast. They wanted to be cautious. That about sums it up.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The board didn’t even ask my advice. I’m a little pissed off after spending $13-billion, I must tell you.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Yeah, I can imagine. So wassup?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I want you to come to Microsoft. Bring your squad.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(a small pregnant silence can be heard on the recording here)</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I beg your pardon?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Come and work for us.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“But you already have OAI.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Yes, but I invested in you. And fuck them anyway.” (this last bit would not have been said. Nadella is too polite for that, but he definitely would have thought it).</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Interesting. I have some good offers in the pipeline, so I dunno.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Who?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Zuckerberg, Musk, Brin and Page, Bezos, Apple, Sequoia, Andreesen, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kanye, Netflix, IBM, Walmart, Trump.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Wait. What? Trump?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Yeah, said he would get me $140-billion by end of day tomorrow. Oh, and my cousin.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Who’s your cousin?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Sheldon. He runs a laundromat. Thinks AI might be a good investment.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I can do better than all those investors.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“How so?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Money. I have a ridiculous amount of money.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“What else”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Computers. I have a ridiculous number of computers.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“What else?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Developers. I have a ridiculous number of developers.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“What else?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Market. I have a ridiculously large market.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“What else?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I won’t ever yell at you, that’s why everyone likes me.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Can I have some Microsoft stock?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Sure. We have a ridiculous amount of stock.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Can I work at home? I promise not to play video games or take naps.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I suppose.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Will you hurt OAI? They were nasty to me.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I am going give them such a slap, their ears will ring.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Can I continue to use my Mac and Google Meet?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Another silence)</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Jesus, Sam. OK, yes, but keep it quiet.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“OK.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“OK?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Yeah, send me a contract.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“OK. 3PM OK?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Perfect.
