"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 60 media and civil society organisations have signed an </span><a href=\"https://cpj.org/2024/07/media-organizations-urge-israel-to-open-access-to-gaza/#full-letter-below\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">open letter</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> urging Israel to give journalists independent access to Gaza.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The organisations — which include the Associated Press, Agence France-Presse, BBC, CNN, The Guardian, The New York Times, and The Washington Post — point out that no independent media access to Gaza has been permitted since the start of the war, increasing the pressure on domestic journalists and creating a space for misinformation and disinformation to flourish.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“More than 100 </span><a href=\"https://cpj.org/2024/06/journalist-casualties-in-the-israel-gaza-conflict/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">journalists have been killed</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since the start of the war and those who remain are working in conditions of extreme deprivation. The result is that information from Gaza is becoming harder and </span><a href=\"https://cpj.org/2024/05/why-impact-of-israel-gaza-war-has-become-harder-to-document/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harder to obtain</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and that the reporting which does get through is subject to repeated questions over its veracity,” the organisations say in the letter, which was coordinated by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The letter comes ahead of a </span><a href=\"https://www.reuters.com/world/us/biden-netanyahu-expected-meet-washington-during-israeli-pms-july-visit-2024-07-03/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">planned visit</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the US, where he is set to meet with US President Joe Biden and address the US Congress on 24 July.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CPJ CEO Jodie Ginsberg noted: “President Netanyahu describes Israel as a democracy. His actions with regard to the media tell a different story. International, Israeli and Palestinian journalists from outside Gaza should be given independent access to Gaza so they can judge for themselves what is happening in this war — rather than being spoon-fed with a handful of organised tours by the Israeli military.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to news outlets, the signatories — who span more than 26 countries — include professional groups and organisations dedicated to defending press freedom. </span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Committee to Protect Journalists is an independent, nonprofit organisation that promotes press freedom worldwide. This effective ban on foreign reporting has placed an impossible and unreasonable burden on local reporters to document a war through which they are living. The attack killed and injured hundreds of soldiers and civilians and took dozens of hostages.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"9:1-9:227\">The attack took Israel by surprise, though the state quickly mounted a deadly retaliatory operation. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched airstrikes against Hamas targets in Gaza. The IDF also sent ground troops into Gaza.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"11:1-11:218\">The conflict has been devastating for both sides. Thousands have died or have been injured.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"13:1-13:238\">The conflict has also had a devastating impact on the infrastructure in Gaza. The IDF has destroyed hospitals, schools, and power plants. The United Nations estimates that more than 72,000 Palestinians have been displaced by the fighting.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"15:1-15:261\">The international community has called for a cease-fire between Israel and Palestine to end the latest crisis in the Middle East.
