It was glamorous to insult women. Today, as </span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/01/25/exclusive-zimbabwe-soldier-says-committed-rape-broke-legs-government/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><u>security forces</u></span></span></span></a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">reportedly rape women with impunity and boast of it, as Zimbabwean men we ought to examine our own shame and consciences.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\nWe must recall, in the grip of the 2017 coup, vile, sexist jokes flourished like this: <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Mugabe’s downfall is a lesson to men that never trust your wife. Political power is not sexually transmitted</span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">– foul jokes along these lines flourished on Zimbabwe’s WhatsApp and Facebook chatrooms. </span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">This woman Grace corrupted our good president, Mugabe,” </span></span></span><a href=\"https://news.pindula.co.zw/2017/11/27/video-chinotimba-speaks-ill-of-grace-says-she-caused-mugabe-to-lose-ideology/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">boomed</span></span></a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">one Joseph Chinotimba, a charismatic lawmaker on Zimbabwe</span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">’</span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">s state radio. “She is the chief loose woman. Men never allow your women to interfere in your office work and business deals.” </span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">One Oppah Muchinguri, a minister, the most senior woman in Zimbabwe’s government, echoed this bizarre trend of disturbing attacks on fellow women’s abilities </span></span></span><a href=\"https://bulawayo24.com/index-id-news-sc-national-byo-123099.html\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">when according to Bulawayo24 news agency, </span></span></a><a href=\"https://bulawayo24.com/index-id-news-sc-national-byo-123099.html\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><u>she said</u></span></span></span></a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">“(President Mugabe) by allowing his wife to have an active role in politics plotted his own downfall”.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>National Mood</b></span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Much of this popular bashing of women’s dignity resonated with the current public mood in Zimbabwe because of the perceived actions of the unelected Grace Mugabe, the 53-year-old wife of the former president, Robert Mugabe. </span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Grace Mugabe, an </span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/11/09/imelda-marcos-sentenced-42-years-corruption/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>Imelda Marcos</i></span></span></a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">sort-of figure, had grabbed executive authority from her frail 94-year-old husband by the backdoor, court papers deposited at the</span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/zimbabwe-mugabe-military-action-ruled-legal-1.4419641\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><u> Zimbabwe High Court</u></span></span></span></a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">during the feverish close of the coup claimed. Grace, it was said, was sacking and elevating cabinet ministers at the stroke of her eyelashes. </span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<a name=\"_GoBack\"></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">On the pages of </span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/Africa/Zimbabwe/soldiers-demand-free-sex-threaten-prostitutes-as-reward-for-ousting-robert-mugabe-study-shows-20180330\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><u>Zimbabwe’s media</u></span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">, in the aftermath of tumultuous coup events, worrying stories began to emerge. </span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">“Soldiers demand free sex as reward for ousting Mugabe” ran a report authored by Zimbabwe’s </span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/Africa/Zimbabwe/soldiers-demand-free-sex-threaten-prostitutes-as-reward-for-ousting-robert-mugabe-study-shows-20180330\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">National Aids Council</span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">. We looked aside. </span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">It was as if Zimbabwe’s women were merely sex fantasy objects existing to satisfy male victors of a coup.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\nThis author, it must be said, does not in any way seek to sanitise the legacy of Grace Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s former first lady. Her <a href=\"https://www.news24.com/Africa/Zimbabwe/evicted-villagers-demand-apology-from-cruel-grace-mugabe-report-20180304\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><u>wholesale eviction</u></span></span></span></a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">of women, children and the elderly in Zimbabwe’s prime farming belts to expand her fancy wildlife farms were cruel and callous. By any stretch of imagination, she is not a symbol of Zimbabwe’s upliftment of women.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\nBut to lampoon Grace Mugabe and hold her up as a symbol of the inability of Zimbabwean women to govern a country is mischievous and retrogressive. Ms Mugabe<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">’</span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">s tainted profile does not represent Zimbabwe’s women (who now live under the threat of militia beatings and forced sex). Zimbabwe as a nation is endowed with women of distinction and astonishing ability. By way of example, Joyce Mujuru, a moderate former vice president of Zimbabwe</span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">’</span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">s ruling party, who </span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-30400178\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><u>was sacked</u></span></span></span></a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">on a flurry of male egoistic orders, is a woman of repute. </span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So, whirling mainstream Zimbabwe social jokes suggesting the army will never salute a woman president, are disgraceful. Such male – jingoistic jokes in effect, appear to vilify Zimbabwe’s women as spoilers, and unfit for high office.\r\n</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Today, amid Zimbabwe</span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">’</span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">s crudest </span></span></span><a href=\"https://news.sky.com/story/zimbabwe-daylight-beatings-instil-public-fear-in-lawless-country-11619470\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><u>security clampdown</u></span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">, these casual, seemingly harmless jokes, have taken a deadly rout on Zimbabwe women</span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">’</span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">s bodies. </span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><u><b>DM</b></u></span></span></span>",
