He joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1959 and became an anti-apartheid activist. He was imprisoned for 10 years for his political activities.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"5:1-5:186\">After his release from prison, Zuma served in various government positions, including as deputy president of South Africa from 1999 to 2005. In 2007, he was elected president of the ANC.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"7:1-7:346\">Zuma was elected president of South Africa in 2009. His presidency was marked by controversy, including allegations of corruption and mismanagement. He was also criticized for his close ties to the Gupta family, a wealthy Indian business family accused of using their influence to enrich themselves at the expense of the South African government.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"9:1-9:177\">In 2018, Zuma resigned as president after facing mounting pressure from the ANC and the public. He was subsequently convicted of corruption and sentenced to 15 months in prison.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"11:1-11:340\">Jacob Zuma is a controversial figure, but he is also a significant figure in South African history. He was the first president of South Africa to be born after apartheid, and he played a key role in the transition to democracy. However, his presidency was also marred by scandal and corruption, and he is ultimately remembered as a flawed leader.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"11:1-11:340\">The African National Congress (ANC) is the oldest political party in South Africa and has been the ruling party since the first democratic elections in 1994.</p>",
