The MOD has refused to comment on what had happened to him since or where he is being held.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a</span><a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/100000091503277/videos/3494334410579575/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> posted before the protest, Al-Batati said he was born in Yemen and joined the British army in 2017. Al-Batati wore combat uniform with insignia suggesting he is a lance corporal from the</span><a href=\"https://www.army.mod.uk/who-we-are/corps-regiments-and-units/royal-signals/14-signal-regiment-electronic-warfare/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14 Signals Regiment (Electronic Warfare)</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unit is part of the Royal Corps of Signals which has</span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-09-27-britains-secret-saudi-military-support-programme/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">close</span></a><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-10-28-the-uks-secret-military-unit-that-answers-to-saudi-arabian-commanders/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connections</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the Saudi Arabian National Guard, a body which protects the ruling Saud family and is</span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-10-28-the-uks-secret-military-unit-that-answers-to-saudi-arabian-commanders/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by a permanent British military mission.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explaining his reasons for the protest, Al-Batati said: “Yemen is facing the worst humanitarian crisis… due to years of war. This proxy war is led by Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia are responsible for multiple airstrikes, killing innocents, targeting hospitals and breaking international law. Saudi Arabia are also responsible for blocking aid from going into the country. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“This has left 80% of the population in need of emergency aid. That’s 24 million people in need of emergency aid. Yet our government continues to arm and support Saudi Arabia. We tried to make our voices heard by protesting in London, Manchester, Liverpool and many other cities. We’ve even tried to email our MPs, but clearly our words mean nothing to Boris Johnson.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“And it’s clear this government has blood on their hands, so with that being said I refuse to continue my military service until the arms trade with Saudi Arabia has been put to an end. British arms giant BAE Systems has provided</span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/apr/14/bae-systems-sold-15bn-arms-to-saudis-during-yemen-assault\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">£15-billion</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> worth of weapons and services to the Saudi military since the Yemen war began in 2015. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 7 July, the UK government resumed licensing new arms sales to Saudi Arabia,</span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-07-15-children-killed-in-yemen-by-saudi-led-airstrikes-days-before-and-after-uk-arms-sales-resume/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claiming</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there was “not a clear risk” of British weapons being used for war crimes. At least</span><a href=\"https://theferret.scot/children-killed-yemen-uk-arms-sales-saudi-arabia/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yemeni children have been killed in airstrikes since that decision was taken.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Half of the Saudi-led coalition air raids in</span><a href=\"https://mailchi.mp/437e5db2171f/august2020-yemen-data-project-update-6448020?e=76d6ef49cf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">July</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hit civilian targets, in 58 cases where impact locations could be identified, according to the Yemen Data Project. The monitoring group said 18,500 civilians have now been killed or injured in airstrikes since the Yemen war began.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Al-Batati continued: “I joined the army in 2017 and took an oath to protect and serve this country, not to be part of a corrupt government that continues to arm and support terrorism. What made this decision so easy for me and why I choose to sacrifice a lot of things including possibly my freedom is for the simple fact that me myself as somebody that was born in Yemen I could have easily fell victim to one of those air strikes or died out of hunger. (Credit: EPA-EFE / Will Oliver / Pool)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When contacted for comment, Lieutenant Colonel Richard Wade from the MOD press office asked </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declassified</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> “what sort of angle you have taken on the war in Yemen” before saying the MOD’s comment would be provided “shortly”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An hour later, Wade said via email: “I’m afraid that I’m not going to be able to send you anything today. Please submit an FOI [Freedom of Information request] for anything that you require.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British war veteran Joe Glenton, who served in Afghanistan and spent time in a military prison in the UK for criticising the war on terror, told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declassified</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the MOD’s suggestion to resort to an FOI request “seems like a complete abandonment of how to deal with the media and the MOD needs to get a grip on that”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glenton, who has become a journalist since leaving the army and wrote the book</span><a href=\"https://www.versobooks.com/books/1428-soldier-box\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soldier Box</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about his experiences, commented that Al-Batati was “rather brave in my view” as “doing a protest in uniform is a big no no”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added: “There are big questions, particularly for someone who says he’s Anglo-Yemeni, but for any British soldiers, about the ethics of who the British government is training and arming – look at the Royal Marines’ recent support for</span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-08-20-belarus-military-has-received-assistance-from-the-uk-a-dozen-times-in-past-five-years/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belarus</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We don’t know where Ahmed is now but I suspect he’s in custody at his unit which is a signals or electronic warfare regiment based in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
