The death of six MK members in a taxi accident is a stark reminder of the urgent need to improve road safety in KwaZulu-Natal, says the EFF.

The uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party is mourning the tragic death of six members in a taxi accident in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday, 31 August.

They were en route to a celebratory event in KwaDakwadunuse in northern KZN when their minibus caught fire, and they were trapped inside.

Ten other members were injured and taken to hospital. The accident is believed to have occurred at about 11am.

Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said: “Whilst we can never fully dissect the anatomy of the pain caused by such grief, we as the leaders of the party send our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to their next of kin and further assure their families that we will support them during these trying times.”

Ndhlela commended the members’ bravery, and said the party would pick up the spear and continue the fight for economic emancipation. “Our members were no cowards, they died with their boots on in the front line of the struggle for the economic emancipation of our people.”

The EFF in KwaZulu-Natal said on Sunday it was saddened by the deaths of the MK members as well as 14 other people in three separate incidents.

The party’s provincial spokesperson, Mongezi Twala, said the deaths were a stark reminder of the urgent need to improve road safety in KZN.

“We call on local authorities to conduct thorough investigations into the causes of these crashes and to implement effective measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. Ensuring the safety of all road users must be a top priority,” Twala said. DM
