"description": "Daily Maverick is an independent online news publication and weekly print newspaper in South Africa.\r\n\r\nIt is known for breaking some of the defining stories of South Africa in the past decade, including the Marikana Massacre, in which the South African Police Service killed 34 miners in August 2012.\r\n\r\nIt also investigated the Gupta Leaks, which won the 2019 Global Shining Light Award.\r\n\r\nThat investigation was credited with exposing the Indian-born Gupta family and former President Jacob Zuma for their role in the systemic political corruption referred to as state capture.\r\n\r\nIn 2018, co-founder and editor-in-chief Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic was awarded the country’s prestigious Nat Nakasa Award, recognised for initiating the investigative collaboration after receiving the hard drive that included the email tranche.\r\n\r\nIn 2021, co-founder and CEO Styli Charalambous also received the award.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick covers the latest political and news developments in South Africa with breaking news updates, analysis, opinions and more.",

The history of corruption is a snake eating its own tail.\r\n\r\nThis sorry episode exposed again just how gullible people are when “fantastic” returns are promised in an anarcho-capitalist world. It revealed how doling out cash to politicians and government officials greases the potholed road to wealth, prestige and power. It revealed that law enforcement takes time.\r\n\r\nSouth Africa’s space-time is nonlinear. It took five years in this instance; but 15 or more when we turn to our other protagonist in this story, former president Jacob Zuma.\r\n\r\nIt was Zuma’s hem that Liebenberg wished to touch, Msholozi’s ring he wished to kiss.\r\n\r\nZuma was the not-so-dark horse on which Liebenberg bet to provide his “volk” (people) with a Promised Homeland, a Freudian ruse the grifter thought up to bag this very volk. If you can snag that epigenetic fear of “integration”, you’ve found your tribe.\r\n\r\nWhy live together when black people don’t use toilet paper and prefer defecating in public, said Liebenberg to his followers.\r\n\r\nLife between black and white was not compatible, and Zuma understood this. Apparently. (Lolsies)\r\n\r\nLiebenberg, himself appearing to be using a toilet and toilet paper to defecate while broadcasting a sermon, sought to prove just how superior a species he is.\r\n\r\nWe learned that he could talk kak and wipe his arse at the same time.\r\n\r\nSomeone should honour Liebenberg by printing his face on rolls of TP. (Business tip – take it or leave it.)\r\n\r\nThe Port Nolloth-born conman, over the years, admitted to giving Zuma, who moved through his terms of office with criminal charges trailing like a sillage of cheap toilet spray, more than R10-million.\r\n\r\nThis was for various necessities including an attack on democracy and the judiciary: funding Zuma’s attempt to silence state prosecutor Billy Downer and journalist Karyn Maughan in the almost two-decade-long arms deal corruption trial.\r\n\r\nLiebenberg was an indiscriminate superspreader, however, cosying up to a range of Afrikaans celebrities and personalities who all now claim a lack of knowledge.\r\n\r\nThat it took the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation five years to stop Liebenberg and his collaborators from operating also says much about law enforcement having to wade through the financial treacle of his business Tariomix, trading as Forever Diamonds and Gold.\r\n\r\nA substantially diminished Liebenberg – physically, with his cotton shirts now billowing like a Demis Roussos kaftan, combined with his ranting from the dock of the Bronkhorstspruit magistrate’s court – has revealed himself as the batshit-crazy manipulator he has always been.\r\n\r\nIt is little surprise that he sought birds of a feather, drawn by the carcasses littered across the desert of State Capture that still have meat left. It’s crowded out there.\r\n\r\nUnited in grifting and lawlessness, giddy with immunity, able to whisper into the ear of the gods, Liebenberg and his cohorts spread their reach and their gospel like an STD.\r\n\r\nAfrikaners like Carl Niehaus draw derision and scorn for their Class A arselicking of whoever is feeding at the trough. And their Class A grifting.\r\n\r\nBut who is fooling who here is a knot the courts must unravel.\r\n\r\nSeven other accused are facing 42 charges alongside Liebenberg and his wife. They include his former lawyer and various co-directors and assistants.\r\n\r\nWhile the others have all been let out on bail, Liebenberg and his wife, who were arrested while dining at a restaurant, are behind bars. Barking “Viva Msholozi” and “Viva MK” and raising his fist each time he was dragged back to the cells below the court, Liebenberg is a worthy winner of this year’s Moegoe of the Year award.\r\n\r\nLouis, your statuette will soon be in the post. He is also referred to by his initials JZ and clan name Msholozi.
\r\n
Zuma was born in Nkandla, South Africa, in 1942. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1959 and became an anti-apartheid activist. He was imprisoned for 10 years for his political activities.
\r\n
After his release from prison, Zuma served in various government positions, including as deputy president of South Africa from 1999 to 2005. In 2007, he was elected president of the ANC.
\r\n
Zuma was elected president of South Africa in 2009. His presidency was marked by controversy, including allegations of corruption and mismanagement. He was also criticized for his close ties to the Gupta family, a wealthy Indian business family accused of using their influence to enrich themselves at the expense of the South African government.
\r\n
In 2018, Zuma resigned as president after facing mounting pressure from the ANC and the public. He was subsequently convicted of corruption and sentenced to 15 months in prison.
\r\n
Jacob Zuma is a controversial figure, but he is also a significant figure in South African history. He was the first president of South Africa to be born after apartheid, and he played a key role in the transition to democracy. However, his presidency was also marred by scandal and corruption, and he is ultimately remembered as a flawed leader.
\r\n
The African National Congress (ANC) is the oldest political party in South Africa and has been the ruling party since the first democratic elections in 1994.
",
