"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ANC nomination process has many unexpected turns but ANC Member of Parliament Tina Joemat-Pettersson joining the leadership race was the one that had delegates aligned with ANC head of organising Nomvula Mokonyane the most dissatisfied. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first it seemed as though Mokonyane would be uncontested with a number of members rejecting nominations from the floor. The names of former youth league secretary Vuyiswa Tulelo, ANC women’s league coordinator </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marupene Ramokgopa as well as co-ordinator in the secretary general’s office were endorsed. (Photo: Leila Dougan)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite having already been on the ballot, party general manager Fébé Potgieter refused to take any nominations for either the first or second deputy secretary general. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The squabble over nominations came in when Elexions Agency director general Bontle Mpakanyane recognised a delegate from the Northern Cape but only allowed them to make a nomination after mentioning that the process is closed. </span>\r\n\r\nRead more in Daily Maverick: <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-11-22-zweli-mkhize-clinches-enough-nominations-to-contest-incumbent-cyril-ramaphosa-for-top-anc-position/\">Zweli Mkhize clinches enough nominations to contest Cyril Ramaphosa for top ANC position</a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This saw Gauteng delegates complaining about the manner in which the process was being run and later delegates from the Free State and NorthWest joined the fray.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The delegates </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">say the process is flawed and that allowing Joemat-Pettersson to contest Mokonyane is wrong. They argue that the nomination process was not supposed to be reopened to allow any more contenders.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After much contestation Mokonyane’s camp lost the battle and Joemat-Pettersson was added to the ballot. This means the party will have seven officials and a second secretary general would have to be voted in to enhance the ANC’s administrative capacity. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramokgopa [Marupene] accepted the nomination for 2nd deputy secretary general. "description": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gwede Mantashe is a South African politician and the current Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy within the African National Congress (ANC). </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The portfolio was called the Ministry of Minerals and Energy until May 2009, when President Jacob Zuma split it into two separate portfolios under the Ministry of Mining (later the Ministry of Mineral Resources) and the Ministry of Energy. Ten years later, in May 2019, his successor President Cyril Ramaphosa reunited the portfolios as the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mantashe</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was born in 1955 in the Eastern Cape province, and began his working life at Western Deep Levels mine in 1975 as a Recreation Officer and, in the same year, moved to Prieska Copper Mines where he was Welfare Officer until 1982.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He then joined Matla Colliery and co-founded the Witbank branch of the National Union of Mine Workers (NUM), becoming its Chairperson. He held the position of NUM Regional Secretary in 1985. Mantashe showcased his skills and leadership within the NUM, serving as the National Organiser from 1988 to 1993 and as the Regional Coordinator from 1993 to 1994.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From 1994 to 1998, Mantashe held the role of Assistant General Secretary of the NUM and was later elected General Secretary in 1998.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During his initial tenure in government, Mantashe served as a Councillor in the Ekurhuleni Municipality from 1995 to 1999. Notably, he made history by becoming the first trade unionist appointed to the Board of Directors of a Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed company, Samancor.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In May 2006, Mantashe stepped down as the General Secretary of the NUM and took on the role of Executive Director at the Development Bank of Southern Africa for a two-year period. He also chaired the Technical Working Group of the Joint Initiative for Priority Skills Acquisition.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2007, Mantashe became the Chairperson of the South African Communist Party and a member of its Central Committee. He was elected Secretary-General of the African National Congress (ANC) at the party's 52nd National Conference in December 2007. Mantashe was re-elected to the same position in 2012. Additionally, at the ANC's 54th National Conference in 2017, he was elected as the National Chairperson.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mantashe is a complex and controversial figure. He has been accused of being too close to the ANC's corrupt leadership, and of being a hardliner who is opposed to reform. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His actions and statements have sparked controversy and allegations of protecting corruption, undermining democratic principles, and prioritising party loyalty over the interests of the country.</span>",

"description": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ANC nomination process has many unexpected turns but ANC Member of Parliament Tina Joemat-Pettersson joining the leadership race was the one that had delegates aligned with ANC head of organising Nomvula Mokonyane the most dissatisfied. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first it seemed as though Mokonyane would be uncontested with a number of members rejecting nominations from the floor. The names of former youth league secretary Vuyiswa Tulelo, ANC women’s league coordinator </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marupene Ramokgopa as well as co-ordinator in the secretary general’s office were endorsed. (Photo: Leila Dougan)[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite having already been on the ballot, party general manager Fébé Potgieter refused to take any nominations for either the first or second deputy secretary general. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The squabble over nominations came in when Elexions Agency director general Bontle Mpakanyane recognised a delegate from the Northern Cape but only allowed them to make a nomination after mentioning that the process is closed. </span>\r\n\r\nRead more in Daily Maverick: <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-11-22-zweli-mkhize-clinches-enough-nominations-to-contest-incumbent-cyril-ramaphosa-for-top-anc-position/\">Zweli Mkhize clinches enough nominations to contest Cyril Ramaphosa for top ANC position</a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This saw Gauteng delegates complaining about the manner in which the process was being run and later delegates from the Free State and NorthWest joined the fray.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The delegates </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">say the process is flawed and that allowing Joemat-Pettersson to contest Mokonyane is wrong. They argue that the nomination process was not supposed to be reopened to allow any more contenders.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After much contestation Mokonyane’s camp lost the battle and Joemat-Pettersson was added to the ballot. This means the party will have seven officials and a second secretary general would have to be voted in to enhance the ANC’s administrative capacity. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramokgopa [Marupene] accepted the nomination for 2nd deputy secretary general. (Photo: Leila Dougan)[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Gwen) Ramokgopa will contest Ramaphosa's advisor Bejani Chauke, ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe and Ekurhuleni leader Mzwandile Masina for the position. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Mabuza will not be coming back to serve for a second term as he chose to reject the deputy president nomination from the floor. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as the positions for president, deputy president and secretary general, the ballot will remain the same.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cooperative Governance Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma was nominated from the floor for the position of ANC President but declined. </span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Cyril Ramaphosa and Zweli Mkhize are on the ballot.
