"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Thursday health NGO Ritshidze Project launched its </span><a href=\"https://ritshidze.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Ritshidze-State-of-Health-Limpopo-2021.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limpopo report on the state of the health system in Limpopo</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which spans April to June 2021. It released a similar report on the state of the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-06-28-crucial-medicine-often-out-of-stock-in-north-west-clinics-report-finds/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North West health system</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in June.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report, which was as a result of community-led monitoring, was compiled in collaboration with a number of partner organisations, including the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), National Association of People Living with HIV and Aids, and Positive Action Campaign.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report found that the province’s failure to meet the UN’s HIV Sustainable Development Goals of </span><a href=\"https://www.aidsmap.com/news/jul-2021/getting-95-95-95-global-use-hiv-generics-would-result-large-reductions-spending-new\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">95-95-95</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a direct result of the poor health services people were receiving. The goals are that 95% of people living with HIV should know their status, (Limpopo is at 91%); 95% of people living with HIV should know their status on treatment, (in Limpopo this is at 71%); and 95% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) should be virally suppressed (this is at 87% in the province).</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication stockouts, privacy and understaffing were identified as major problems, particularly among nurses, nurses’ assistants, pharmacists, lab technicians, general assistants and cleaners. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients reported long waiting times when seeking medical services, with the average time being four hours. Many patients said that they started queuing at medical facilities at 4am and that they felt “very unsafe” having to do this.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the report, 35-year-old Adam from Giyani, who was diagnosed with HIV in 2010, said he is dependent on the public health system to get his ARV medication. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I am working, so I can only get to the clinic sometimes in the afternoon and when you get there the nurses will still be on lunch, all of them at the same time,” Adam said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> On the issue of privacy he said that, “There is still a thing at Giyani where they will separate the chronic medicine patients from others. It doesn’t worry me because I have accepted my status, but for some people it means they are forced by the queue to disclose, even when they’re not ready.”</span>\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/rithshidze-limpopo-inset-2/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1020948\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Rithshidze-Limpopo-inset-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1097\" /></a> An attendee at the launch of the Ritshidze report. (Photo: Rian Horn / Ritshidze)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report’s recommendations for the department of health included:</span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extend medical facility operating hours;</span></li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effective and immediate communication of medication stockouts as well as a provincial strategy to address stockouts; </span></li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All patients to be consulted in private rooms;</span></li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No PLHIV to ever receive less than two months’ supply of ARVs;</span></li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carry out a full audit of all public health facilities in the province to assess whether sufficient TB infection control measures are in place; and</span></li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100% of primary healthcare facilities should have established and functioning clinic committees.</span></li>\r\n</ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Limpopo Department of Health had been invited to the launch but was not in attendance. TAC national chairperson Sibongile Tshabalala said she would like to send a clear message to the district department of health that, “It’s not your call to tell us how to raise our issues… when to publish our reports or when not to publish our reports… it seems we are the only ones who want to see an improvement in the services.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Association of People Living with HIV and Aids welcomed the report, saying that “it was an eye-opener” and that the recommendations showed that there was a need for organisations to reignite activism and not just write reports in order to engage the Department of Health.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next Ritshidze meetings where provincial reports will be launched will be </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Free State on Thursday, 9 September, and the Eastern Cape on Thursday, 23 September. </span><b>DM/MC</b>",
