"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Royal Air Force (RAF) has taught </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-29/96986\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Saudi Typhoon jet pilots since 2008, with up to </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-29/96987\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pilots still receiving the training at RAF </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-29/96988\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coningsby</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Lincolnshire. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scale of UK support to Saudi Arabia could mean that as many as a third of its Typhoon fleet is being flown by British-trained pilots. Defence Minister James Heappey told </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-29/96986\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parliament</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Monday October 5 that the RAF does not “monitor the size of the current RSAF [Royal Saudi Air Force] Typhoon pilot cadre”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saudi Arabia has used the Typhoon extensively in Yemen since 2015, a conflict which has become the world’s worst humanitarian disaster, with millions of people on the brink of famine.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the government has previously admitted training more than </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-06-24/64304\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Saudi Air Force pilots in the UK during the past decade, it is the first time ministers have clarified how many have learnt to fly the Typhoon, which is the most powerful aircraft Britain supplies to Saudi Arabia.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The revelations add to a growing body of evidence that Saudi airstrikes in Yemen are heavily dependent on British arms and training.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heappey, who was answering questions from Labour MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle, confirmed that Britain is also continuing to provide Saudi pilots with training on air-to-ground attacks. The instruction takes place in a Typhoon </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-14/89809\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">simulator</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> jointly </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-29/96990\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">operated</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by arms company BAE Systems and the Ministry of Defence (MoD).</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Saudi student </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-14/89804\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pilots</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are being taught to fly BAE’s smaller Hawk jets at RAF </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2018-10-23/182736\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valley</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Anglesey, north Wales. Heappey confirmed that they simulate strafing and </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-29/96989\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paveway IV</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> missile strikes on the </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-14/89808\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pembrey Sands</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> air weapons range in south Wales. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Paveway IV is a “smart bomb” whose guidance system is manufactured in the UK by </span><a href=\"https://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/magazine/raytheon-glenrothes-britain-arms-saudi-arabia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raytheon</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has been </span><a href=\"https://www.hrw.org/report/2016/07/12/bombing-businesses/saudi-coalition-airstrikes-yemens-civilian-economic-structures\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linked</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to strikes on civilian targets in Yemen. Raytheon UK is chaired by Conservative </span><a href=\"https://members.parliament.uk/member/2221/registeredinterests\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peer</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Lord Strathclyde.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government has also </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-28/96167\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conceded</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that “refresher training” for qualified Typhoon pilots is being delivered by RAF instructors in Saudi Arabia, who are on secondment to BAE. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least one Saudi Typhoon pilot has </span><a href=\"https://theaviationist.com/2017/09/14/saudi-eurofighter-typhoon-crashes-during-combat-mission-in-yemen-killing-the-pilot/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">died</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fighting in Yemen, but it is not known where he learnt to fly.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/declassified-typhoon-inset-1/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-734259\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/declassified-typhoon-inset-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1140\" height=\"760\" /></a> A RAF corporal during a routine training session. (Photo: Tim Laurence/Robert Sullivan/Flickr/Public Domain Mark 1.0)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Saudis are </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-29/96987\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joined</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Typhoon training in the UK by a small number of Qatari and American students, plus just 20 British cadets. Last year it </span><a href=\"https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0002z4m\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emerged</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that 350 British military officers were waiting for pilot training slots to become available, and training of fast jet pilots was taking an average of seven years.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The delays in training British pilots were </span><a href=\"http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/rmhttp/fileon4/38_winging_it.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allegedly</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to a shortage of RAF flying instructors, who were being tempted to take up “six-figure tax-free salaries with BAE Systems training the Saudi Air Force”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The revelations come as new </span><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/uk-defence-and-security-export-statistics-for-2019/uk-defence-and-security-export-statistics-for-2019\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">figures</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show the UK is the world’s second-biggest arms exporter, with Saudi Arabia as its largest customer. UK companies exported £11-billion worth of weapons in 2019 – more than Russia and France. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Britain has held this position throughout the past decade, behind only the US. The arms sales are often accompanied by UK military training to ensure customers can operate the equipment.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most lucrative deals involves a contract signed between the Labour government and Saudi Arabia in </span><a href=\"https://www.arabianaerospace.aero/saudis-countdown-to-typhoon-service-entry.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2007</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to sell 72 </span><a href=\"https://www.eurofighter.com/customers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typhoon</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> jets manufactured by BAE at factories in the UK. The deal has been dubbed Project </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salam</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> – an Arabic word for peace.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Supply flights</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every week, BAE sends a </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-04-22-coronavirus-cannot-stop-britains-war-in-yemen/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supply plane</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from its Typhoon factory in Warton, northern England, to Saudi Arabia’s main Typhoon base at King Fahad Air Base in Ta’if. The plane refuels at the RAF </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-05-04/43203\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Akrotiri</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> base in Cyprus, where its crew stay overnight.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The logistics flights have continued throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and a court order against new UK arms sales to Saudi Arabia. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Trade Secretary Liz </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-07-15-children-killed-in-yemen-by-saudi-led-airstrikes-days-before-and-after-uk-arms-sales-resume/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truss</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> resumed licensing arms sales to Saudi Arabia on 7 July, at least 20 </span><a href=\"https://theferret.scot/children-killed-yemen-uk-arms-sales-saudi-arabia/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are alleged to have been killed in airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most </span><a href=\"https://news.sky.com/story/yemen-evidence-of-potential-war-crime-by-saudi-coalition-12083413\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controversial</span></a> <a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hhb-R83EXPg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attacks</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took place at </span><a href=\"https://www.savethechildren.net/news/statement-response-airstrike-hajjah-yemen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washhah</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> district of </span><a href=\"https://reliefweb.int/report/yemen/seven-children-and-two-women-are-killed-and-four-civilians-injured-during-attack-hajjah\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hajjah</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> governorate in northwest Yemen on 12 July, which the coalition claims to be </span><a href=\"https://www.spa.gov.sa/viewstory.php?lang=en&newsid=2109587\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">investigating</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The MoD has not answered </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declassified</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">’s freedom of information request about the Washhah strike, despite submitting it more than 10 weeks ago.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-734260\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/declassified-typhoon-inset-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" /> Graves are dug in the remote Yemeni village of Washhah after nine people, including six children, were killed in an airstrike. (Photo: Al Masirah)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UK support for the Saudi military has become so controversial that in August, Lance Corporal Ahmed al-Batati from the Royal Signals Corps </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-08-25-military-police-probe-british-soldier-over-yemen-war-protest/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protested</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in uniform outside the MoD building in London.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He claimed the government has “blood on [its] hands” for selling weapons to Saudi Arabia and was arrested by the Royal Military Police. </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declassified</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> understands that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of asylum claims from Yemen has risen steeply since the war began. The latest Home Office</span><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-sets/immigration-statistics-data-tables-year-ending-june-2020\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">figures</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that in the 12 months from June 2019, 410 Yemenis claimed asylum in the UK, a 93% rise on the previous year. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the Foreign Office </span><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/news/yemen-has-never-looked-more-likely-to-slide-into-famine-foreign-secretary-warns\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acknowledging</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the scale of the humanitarian disaster in Yemen, the Home Office is targeting Yemeni asylum seekers as part of its current crackdown on immigration. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A spokesperson from one law firm </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declassified</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contacted, </span><a href=\"https://www.duncanlewis.co.uk/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duncan Lewis</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, said its solicitors are working on “a significant number of asylum cases from Yemen, with approximately 24 Yemeni clients booked on recent removal flights to countries in Europe such as Spain or France”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Smith from Campaign Against Arms Trade told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declassified</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “When Saudi Air Force pilots are dropping UK-made bombs from UK-made fighter jets, it is Yemeni civilians who are paying a deadly price. The fact that Saudi pilots have been trained by UK forces makes our government complicit with every stage of the destruction.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The level of integration between the two militaries means that the UK is tied into an increasingly aggressive Saudi foreign policy. The Saudi regime has a long and bloodstained history of repression, the fact that Boris Johnson and his predecessors have done so much to boost it exposes the rank hypocrisy of UK foreign policy in the Middle East and beyond.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An MoD spokesperson said:</span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The UK is doing all it can to help end this devastating conflict by putting our full weight behind the UN-led peace process. We are not a member of the Saudi-led Coalition and have played no role in setting Saudi-led Coalition policy on airstrikes.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We have an ongoing and wide-ranging defence engagement relationship with Saudi Arabia, which has included the provision of training courses and advice and guidance in the UK and Saudi Arabia. The training provided also covers International Humanitarian Law. Defence Minister James Heappey told </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-29/96986\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parliament</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Monday October 5 that the RAF does not “monitor the size of the current RSAF [Royal Saudi Air Force] Typhoon pilot cadre”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saudi Arabia has used the Typhoon extensively in Yemen since 2015, a conflict which has become the world’s worst humanitarian disaster, with millions of people on the brink of famine.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the government has previously admitted training more than </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-06-24/64304\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Saudi Air Force pilots in the UK during the past decade, it is the first time ministers have clarified how many have learnt to fly the Typhoon, which is the most powerful aircraft Britain supplies to Saudi Arabia.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The revelations add to a growing body of evidence that Saudi airstrikes in Yemen are heavily dependent on British arms and training.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heappey, who was answering questions from Labour MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle, confirmed that Britain is also continuing to provide Saudi pilots with training on air-to-ground attacks. The instruction takes place in a Typhoon </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-14/89809\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">simulator</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> jointly </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-29/96990\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">operated</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by arms company BAE Systems and the Ministry of Defence (MoD).</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Saudi student </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-14/89804\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pilots</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are being taught to fly BAE’s smaller Hawk jets at RAF </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2018-10-23/182736\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valley</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Anglesey, north Wales. Heappey confirmed that they simulate strafing and </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-29/96989\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paveway IV</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> missile strikes on the </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-14/89808\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pembrey Sands</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> air weapons range in south Wales. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Paveway IV is a “smart bomb” whose guidance system is manufactured in the UK by </span><a href=\"https://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/magazine/raytheon-glenrothes-britain-arms-saudi-arabia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raytheon</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has been </span><a href=\"https://www.hrw.org/report/2016/07/12/bombing-businesses/saudi-coalition-airstrikes-yemens-civilian-economic-structures\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linked</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to strikes on civilian targets in Yemen. Raytheon UK is chaired by Conservative </span><a href=\"https://members.parliament.uk/member/2221/registeredinterests\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peer</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Lord Strathclyde.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government has also </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-28/96167\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conceded</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that “refresher training” for qualified Typhoon pilots is being delivered by RAF instructors in Saudi Arabia, who are on secondment to BAE. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least one Saudi Typhoon pilot has </span><a href=\"https://theaviationist.com/2017/09/14/saudi-eurofighter-typhoon-crashes-during-combat-mission-in-yemen-killing-the-pilot/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">died</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fighting in Yemen, but it is not known where he learnt to fly.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_734259\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"1140\"]<a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/declassified-typhoon-inset-1/\"><img class=\"size-full wp-image-734259\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/declassified-typhoon-inset-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1140\" height=\"760\" /></a> A RAF corporal during a routine training session. (Photo: Tim Laurence/Robert Sullivan/Flickr/Public Domain Mark 1.0)[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Saudis are </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-09-29/96987\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joined</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Typhoon training in the UK by a small number of Qatari and American students, plus just 20 British cadets. Last year it </span><a href=\"https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0002z4m\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emerged</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that 350 British military officers were waiting for pilot training slots to become available, and training of fast jet pilots was taking an average of seven years.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The delays in training British pilots were </span><a href=\"http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/rmhttp/fileon4/38_winging_it.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allegedly</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to a shortage of RAF flying instructors, who were being tempted to take up “six-figure tax-free salaries with BAE Systems training the Saudi Air Force”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The revelations come as new </span><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/uk-defence-and-security-export-statistics-for-2019/uk-defence-and-security-export-statistics-for-2019\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">figures</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show the UK is the world’s second-biggest arms exporter, with Saudi Arabia as its largest customer. UK companies exported £11-billion worth of weapons in 2019 – more than Russia and France. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Britain has held this position throughout the past decade, behind only the US. The arms sales are often accompanied by UK military training to ensure customers can operate the equipment.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most lucrative deals involves a contract signed between the Labour government and Saudi Arabia in </span><a href=\"https://www.arabianaerospace.aero/saudis-countdown-to-typhoon-service-entry.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2007</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to sell 72 </span><a href=\"https://www.eurofighter.com/customers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typhoon</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> jets manufactured by BAE at factories in the UK. The deal has been dubbed Project </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salam</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> – an Arabic word for peace.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Supply flights</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every week, BAE sends a </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-04-22-coronavirus-cannot-stop-britains-war-in-yemen/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supply plane</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from its Typhoon factory in Warton, northern England, to Saudi Arabia’s main Typhoon base at King Fahad Air Base in Ta’if. The plane refuels at the RAF </span><a href=\"https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-05-04/43203\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Akrotiri</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> base in Cyprus, where its crew stay overnight.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The logistics flights have continued throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and a court order against new UK arms sales to Saudi Arabia. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Trade Secretary Liz </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-07-15-children-killed-in-yemen-by-saudi-led-airstrikes-days-before-and-after-uk-arms-sales-resume/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truss</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> resumed licensing arms sales to Saudi Arabia on 7 July, at least 20 </span><a href=\"https://theferret.scot/children-killed-yemen-uk-arms-sales-saudi-arabia/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are alleged to have been killed in airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most </span><a href=\"https://news.sky.com/story/yemen-evidence-of-potential-war-crime-by-saudi-coalition-12083413\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controversial</span></a> <a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hhb-R83EXPg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attacks</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took place at </span><a href=\"https://www.savethechildren.net/news/statement-response-airstrike-hajjah-yemen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washhah</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> district of </span><a href=\"https://reliefweb.int/report/yemen/seven-children-and-two-women-are-killed-and-four-civilians-injured-during-attack-hajjah\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hajjah</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> governorate in northwest Yemen on 12 July, which the coalition claims to be </span><a href=\"https://www.spa.gov.sa/viewstory.php?lang=en&newsid=2109587\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">investigating</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The MoD has not answered </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declassified</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">’s freedom of information request about the Washhah strike, despite submitting it more than 10 weeks ago.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_734260\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"1280\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-734260\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/declassified-typhoon-inset-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" /> Graves are dug in the remote Yemeni village of Washhah after nine people, including six children, were killed in an airstrike. (Photo: Al Masirah)[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UK support for the Saudi military has become so controversial that in August, Lance Corporal Ahmed al-Batati from the Royal Signals Corps </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-08-25-military-police-probe-british-soldier-over-yemen-war-protest/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protested</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in uniform outside the MoD building in London.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He claimed the government has “blood on [its] hands” for selling weapons to Saudi Arabia and was arrested by the Royal Military Police. </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declassified</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> understands that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of asylum claims from Yemen has risen steeply since the war began. The latest Home Office</span><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-sets/immigration-statistics-data-tables-year-ending-june-2020\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">figures</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that in the 12 months from June 2019, 410 Yemenis claimed asylum in the UK, a 93% rise on the previous year. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the Foreign Office </span><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/news/yemen-has-never-looked-more-likely-to-slide-into-famine-foreign-secretary-warns\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acknowledging</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the scale of the humanitarian disaster in Yemen, the Home Office is targeting Yemeni asylum seekers as part of its current crackdown on immigration. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A spokesperson from one law firm </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declassified</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contacted, </span><a href=\"https://www.duncanlewis.co.uk/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duncan Lewis</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, said its solicitors are working on “a significant number of asylum cases from Yemen, with approximately 24 Yemeni clients booked on recent removal flights to countries in Europe such as Spain or France”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Smith from Campaign Against Arms Trade told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declassified</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “When Saudi Air Force pilots are dropping UK-made bombs from UK-made fighter jets, it is Yemeni civilians who are paying a deadly price. The fact that Saudi pilots have been trained by UK forces makes our government complicit with every stage of the destruction.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The level of integration between the two militaries means that the UK is tied into an increasingly aggressive Saudi foreign policy. The Saudi regime has a long and bloodstained history of repression, the fact that Boris Johnson and his predecessors have done so much to boost it exposes the rank hypocrisy of UK foreign policy in the Middle East and beyond.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An MoD spokesperson said:</span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The UK is doing all it can to help end this devastating conflict by putting our full weight behind the UN-led peace process. We are not a member of the Saudi-led Coalition and have played no role in setting Saudi-led Coalition policy on airstrikes.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We have an ongoing and wide-ranging defence engagement relationship with Saudi Arabia, which has included the provision of training courses and advice and guidance in the UK and Saudi Arabia. The training provided also covers International Humanitarian Law.
