"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“She changed people’s lives in a remarkable way,” said Simphiwe Ngcobo, the regional manager of the SABC in Kwazulu-Natal, about Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family, friends and co-workers gathered at the GNF Durban Station on Thursday for Mbokazi-Nkambule’s </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/live/6w04l1i-i4M?si=3KeSy2Cp4GXUlJLl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">memorial service</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ukhozi FM broadcaster and Crown Gospel Awards founder succumbed to lung cancer at the age of 52 on Monday at Parklands Hospital in Durban, leaving behind her husband, Bishop Mpendulo Nkambule, and her daughter, Yolanda.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more:</b> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2024-08-12-tributes-pour-in-for-zanele-mbokazi-nkambule-she-nurtured-the-growth-of-gospel-music-in-south-africa/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tributes pour in for Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule – ‘She nurtured the growth of gospel music in South Africa’</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Affectionately known to her fans as “Mazetzet”, Mbokazi-Nkambule was remembered at her memorial service for her impact on the gospel music industry.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Stella Khumalo, the acting director-general of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, said: “What we appreciate as the government of South Africa is the fact that [her beauty] was reflected through the work she did, especially to uplift the artists and the creatives, not just of this country but those outside the country as well.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said the Crown Gospel Awards were “the beacon of her vision and a platform to honour the artistic excellence and help us promote the rich tradition of gospel music.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“South Africa as a country has enjoyed the limelight through her hard work, globally and otherwise, through her innovation and passion, and with her departure, we believe that the world is less bright.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khumalo said the government was committed to “continue to support the Crown Gospel Awards”. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yolanda Myeza said of her mother: “We were raised by a force. We were raised by a powerhouse. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“It was only three months from the day that Mom was diagnosed to the day she left us — a very, very short time. But in those three months, the love that we were shown, the love that you showed her, was immense.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mbokazi-Nkambule’s health began to decline earlier this year. On Sunday, 21 April, she missed her popular Eshilo show on Ukhozi FM, sparking concern among her loyal listeners.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was admitted to hospital and her husband announced her lung cancer diagnosis on Ukhozi FM.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Assemblies of God church rallied around her, hosting special sessions of prayers for her recovery. </span>\r\n<h4><b>A life of service and achievement</b></h4>\r\n<a href=\"https://www.mynewsroom.co.za/zanele-mbokazi-nkambule-biography-age-husband-crown-gospel-awards-founder-ukhozi-fm/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mbokazi-Nkambule</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was born in Durban on 7 November 1971. She was a multifaceted individual, serving as a preacher, evangelist, entrepreneur and producer of the Crown Gospel Awards.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She hosted the television show Gospel Gold and had a BA in English and Politics from the University of Natal, a BA Honours in Media and Communications from the same institution, and a diploma in PR from Damelin. Her last working days were spent dedicated to her role at Ukhozi FM. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another </span><a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/share/r/jGZf4PQGfBisjSKd/?mibextid=oFDknk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">memorial service</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Mbokazi-Nkambule will be held in Sunnyhill, Johannesburg on Friday, 16 August. It will include the Joyous Celebration choir, Pastor Jabu Mahlangu and House of Praise.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, 17 August, at the Durban International Convention Centre and she will be buried at Mariannhill cemetery in Pinetown. </span><b>DM</b>",
