"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With an in-person edition of </span><a href=\"https://www.comic-con.org/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Diego Comic-Con</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SDCC) held from 21 to 24 July, for the first time since 2019, it’s been a busy week for announcements, updates and trailer reveals from the worlds of pop culture.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Movies</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year’s Comic-Con may have had a lot of news and trailers, but the most impactful has to be </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Panther: Wakanda Forever</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Judging by the music alone, director Ryan Coogler is going to make the audience cry when we go back to Wakanda, where the leaders of the kingdom are fighting to protect their nation from invading forces in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wakanda Forever</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is notable for being the last film in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it will introduce aquatic anti-hero Namor (Tenoch Huerta) – Marvel Comics’ first superhero – to the MCU.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Panther: Wakanda</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Forever releases in cinemas on 11 November 2022. The all-star voice cast includes Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, Ron Perlman, Cate Blanchett and John Turturro.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinocchio</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> releases on Netflix in December 2022, probably as the streamer’s big holiday season movie.</span>\r\n\r\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tbl5Lbi4xEs&ab_channel=Netflix\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Elvis can get yet another biopic in 2022, then why not fellow mid-20th century icon Marilyn Monroe? Coming to Netflix on 28 September, after debuting at the Venice Film Festival, is </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blonde</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, starring Ana de Armas as Norma Jeane Mortensen/Marilyn Monroe, an aspiring actress and trauma-carrying woman who unravels under the weight of her sexpot image. Adrien Brody plays Monroe’s third husband, playwright Arthur Miller.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blonde</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is based on Joyce Carol Oates’s biographical fiction novel, which was a finalist for both the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. It’s directed by Andrew Dominik (</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Killing Them Softly</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and comes with a surprisingly high NC-17 age restriction. This is separate from the live action </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avatar: The Last Airbender</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show, currently in development for Netflix. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of, the </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avatar</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> world is expanding even more. Also announced during the Nickelodeon panel, </span><a href=\"https://www.themarysue.com/new-avatar-the-last-airbender-graphic-novel-azula-in-the-spirit-temple-announced-at-sdcc-2022/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark Horse will be publishing two new Airbender sequel comics</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://comicbook.com/anime/news/avatar-the-last-airbender-azula-comic-2022/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">graphic novel </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Azula in the Spirit Temple</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, out in the middle of 2023, and a new Korra trilogy.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite middling reviews, Netflix’s </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-07-25-the-gray-man-a-paint-by-numbers-espionage-action-film/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gray Man</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has generated enough love from audiences to warrant not only a sequel, but a spin-off as well. According to </span><a href=\"https://deadline.com/2022/07/netflix-joe-anthony-russo-and-ryan-gosling-are-all-in-on-the-gray-man-as-sequel-spinoff-in-the-works-interview-1235077926/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadline</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, directors Joe and Anthony Russo and star Ryan Gosling are already on board for the untitled sequel, while the mysterious spin-off has snagged screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadpool, Zombieland</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of the Russo brothers, the duo won’t be helming the next </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> movie. That responsibility falls to Destin Daniel Cretton, a fellow MCU alumnus, who made </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Cretton will direct </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: The Kang Dynasty</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, out in May 2025, but not its follow-up, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Secret Wars</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will be released a few months later, in November 2025. </span>\r\n<h4><b>Streaming</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With just a week to go before it hits the small screen, Netflix has released a new trailer for </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sandman</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the highly anticipated adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s iconic graphic novels. </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sandman</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a rich, character-driven blend of myth and dark fantasy woven together over the course of 10 epic chapters, following </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dream of the Endless</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Developed and executive produced by Gaiman himself, with showrunner Allan Heinberg, and David S Goyer, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sandman</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> releases on Netflix on 5 August 2022. </span>\r\n\r\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83ClbRPRDXU&ab_channel=Netflix\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still in adaptation news, network AMC is coming out with a “modern” retelling of Anne Rice’s bestselling novel, </span><a href=\"https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43763.Interview_with_the_Vampire\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interview with the Vampire</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Still set in New Orleans, but this time in 1910, Rice’s classic dark fantasy continues on the small screen in what showrunner Rolin Jones promises will be “even more reverential” to the book than the 1994 film starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm in </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Game of Thrones</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is Louis, while Australian actor Sam Reid (</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prime Suspect 1973</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is centuries-old vampire Lestat. Included among the shows, although perhaps not that big a surprise, is </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daredevil: Born Again</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reprising their roles from the Netflix </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daredevi</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l series are Charlie Cox (as the title character, a Hell's Kitchen vigilante who is blind attorney Matt Murdock by day) and Vincent D’Onofrio as crime lord Wilson Fisk, AKA The Kingpin. Both have already made appearances in the MCU, in </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider-Man: No Way Home</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawkeye, </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respectively. The cartoon will even feature the same art style, and most of the surviving voice cast of the original series are reprising their roles. </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X-Men ‘97</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will debut on Disney+ in Q3 2003, and has already been granted a second season.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you enjoyed </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hidden Figures</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if you are fascinated by historical events that promoted gender equality, and if you remember the 1992 film starring Geena Davis, Madonna and Tom Hanks, you should probably take note of </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A League of Their Own</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This true story and period sports drama centres on the women’s professional baseball teams that sprung up in the US during World War 2 – while the male leagues were short of players. </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broad City</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">’s Abbi Jacobson stars in and co-created the eight-episode series, which comes to Amazon Prime Video on 12 August. </span>\r\n\r\nhttps://youtu.be/H8qMhtkB18k\r\n<h4><b>Gaming</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite publicising both projects quite hard over the past two years, Ubisoft has stopped development on </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghost Recon Frontline</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a free-to-play battle royale shooter set in the </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghost Recon</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> universe, and </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Splinter Cell VR</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a virtual reality stealth game for Meta’s Oculus headset. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two other unannounced titles have been scrapped, while movie tie-in </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an open-world adventure, has been pushed back past March 2023. There are also rumours that Ubisoft’s 3v3 sports game </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roller Champions</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which just launched at the end of May, is on the chopping block too. However, </span><a href=\"https://kotaku.com/roller-champions-ubisoft-canceled-ubisoft-statement-1849329727\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubisoft denies this</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the remake of 2003 RPG </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knights of the Old Republic</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, arguably the best </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> game made to date, </span><a href=\"https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-07-26/star-wars-knights-of-the-old-republic-game-paused-amid-studio-shakeup\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is in deep trouble</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and may never be completed. Announced in September 2021, and in progress for three years already, developers Aspyr Media recently fired two senior creatives guiding the project. Judging by the music alone, director Ryan Coogler is going to make the audience cry when we go back to Wakanda, where the leaders of the kingdom are fighting to protect their nation from invading forces in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wakanda Forever</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is notable for being the last film in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it will introduce aquatic anti-hero Namor (Tenoch Huerta) – Marvel Comics’ first superhero – to the MCU.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Panther: Wakanda</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Forever releases in cinemas on 11 November 2022. The all-star voice cast includes Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, Ron Perlman, Cate Blanchett and John Turturro.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinocchio</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> releases on Netflix in December 2022, probably as the streamer’s big holiday season movie.</span>\r\n\r\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tbl5Lbi4xEs&ab_channel=Netflix\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Elvis can get yet another biopic in 2022, then why not fellow mid-20th century icon Marilyn Monroe? Coming to Netflix on 28 September, after debuting at the Venice Film Festival, is </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blonde</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, starring Ana de Armas as Norma Jeane Mortensen/Marilyn Monroe, an aspiring actress and trauma-carrying woman who unravels under the weight of her sexpot image. Adrien Brody plays Monroe’s third husband, playwright Arthur Miller.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blonde</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is based on Joyce Carol Oates’s biographical fiction novel, which was a finalist for both the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. It’s directed by Andrew Dominik (</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Killing Them Softly</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and comes with a surprisingly high NC-17 age restriction. This is separate from the live action </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avatar: The Last Airbender</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show, currently in development for Netflix. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of, the </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avatar</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> world is expanding even more. Also announced during the Nickelodeon panel, </span><a href=\"https://www.themarysue.com/new-avatar-the-last-airbender-graphic-novel-azula-in-the-spirit-temple-announced-at-sdcc-2022/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark Horse will be publishing two new Airbender sequel comics</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://comicbook.com/anime/news/avatar-the-last-airbender-azula-comic-2022/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">graphic novel </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Azula in the Spirit Temple</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, out in the middle of 2023, and a new Korra trilogy.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite middling reviews, Netflix’s </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-07-25-the-gray-man-a-paint-by-numbers-espionage-action-film/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gray Man</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has generated enough love from audiences to warrant not only a sequel, but a spin-off as well. According to </span><a href=\"https://deadline.com/2022/07/netflix-joe-anthony-russo-and-ryan-gosling-are-all-in-on-the-gray-man-as-sequel-spinoff-in-the-works-interview-1235077926/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadline</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, directors Joe and Anthony Russo and star Ryan Gosling are already on board for the untitled sequel, while the mysterious spin-off has snagged screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadpool, Zombieland</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of the Russo brothers, the duo won’t be helming the next </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> movie. That responsibility falls to Destin Daniel Cretton, a fellow MCU alumnus, who made </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Cretton will direct </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: The Kang Dynasty</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, out in May 2025, but not its follow-up, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Secret Wars</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will be released a few months later, in November 2025. </span>\r\n<h4><b>Streaming</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With just a week to go before it hits the small screen, Netflix has released a new trailer for </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sandman</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the highly anticipated adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s iconic graphic novels. </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sandman</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a rich, character-driven blend of myth and dark fantasy woven together over the course of 10 epic chapters, following </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dream of the Endless</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Developed and executive produced by Gaiman himself, with showrunner Allan Heinberg, and David S Goyer, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sandman</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> releases on Netflix on 5 August 2022. </span>\r\n\r\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83ClbRPRDXU&ab_channel=Netflix\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still in adaptation news, network AMC is coming out with a “modern” retelling of Anne Rice’s bestselling novel, </span><a href=\"https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43763.Interview_with_the_Vampire\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interview with the Vampire</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Still set in New Orleans, but this time in 1910, Rice’s classic dark fantasy continues on the small screen in what showrunner Rolin Jones promises will be “even more reverential” to the book than the 1994 film starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm in </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Game of Thrones</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is Louis, while Australian actor Sam Reid (</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prime Suspect 1973</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is centuries-old vampire Lestat. Included among the shows, although perhaps not that big a surprise, is </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daredevil: Born Again</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reprising their roles from the Netflix </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daredevi</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l series are Charlie Cox (as the title character, a Hell's Kitchen vigilante who is blind attorney Matt Murdock by day) and Vincent D’Onofrio as crime lord Wilson Fisk, AKA The Kingpin. Both have already made appearances in the MCU, in </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider-Man: No Way Home</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawkeye, </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respectively. The cartoon will even feature the same art style, and most of the surviving voice cast of the original series are reprising their roles. </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X-Men ‘97</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will debut on Disney+ in Q3 2003, and has already been granted a second season.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you enjoyed </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hidden Figures</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if you are fascinated by historical events that promoted gender equality, and if you remember the 1992 film starring Geena Davis, Madonna and Tom Hanks, you should probably take note of </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A League of Their Own</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This true story and period sports drama centres on the women’s professional baseball teams that sprung up in the US during World War 2 – while the male leagues were short of players. </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broad City</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">’s Abbi Jacobson stars in and co-created the eight-episode series, which comes to Amazon Prime Video on 12 August. </span>\r\n\r\nhttps://youtu.be/H8qMhtkB18k\r\n<h4><b>Gaming</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite publicising both projects quite hard over the past two years, Ubisoft has stopped development on </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghost Recon Frontline</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a free-to-play battle royale shooter set in the </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghost Recon</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> universe, and </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Splinter Cell VR</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a virtual reality stealth game for Meta’s Oculus headset. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two other unannounced titles have been scrapped, while movie tie-in </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an open-world adventure, has been pushed back past March 2023. There are also rumours that Ubisoft’s 3v3 sports game </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roller Champions</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which just launched at the end of May, is on the chopping block too. However, </span><a href=\"https://kotaku.com/roller-champions-ubisoft-canceled-ubisoft-statement-1849329727\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubisoft denies this</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the remake of 2003 RPG </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knights of the Old Republic</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, arguably the best </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> game made to date, </span><a href=\"https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-07-26/star-wars-knights-of-the-old-republic-game-paused-amid-studio-shakeup\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is in deep trouble</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and may never be completed. Announced in September 2021, and in progress for three years already, developers Aspyr Media recently fired two senior creatives guiding the project.
