"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A plan to reform curricula in schools to develop the skills and competencies of learners is under way.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was announced by National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) chairperson Sizwe Nxasana on Monday, 11 August at the NECT’s 10th-anniversary convention at Birchwood Hotel in Kempton Park, Gauteng.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1849391 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Sizwe-Nxasana.jpg\" alt=\"National Education Collaboration Trust\" width=\"720\" height=\"457\" /> <em>National Education Collaboration Trust chairperson Sizwe Nxasana. (Photo: Supplied)</em></p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two-day convention was themed “Reflections on Collaboration to Enhance Education Reform Efforts in South Africa”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nxasana said they were working with the Department of Basic Education to reform the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (Caps) so that it not only focused on knowledge education but also addressed skills and competencies to alleviate unemployment and inequality.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Since 1994, the CAPS curriculum has been academic,” Nxasana said.</span>\r\n<h4><b>NECT background</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nxasana said that with Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga and education development specialist Godwin Khosa, who is the NECT CEO, a dialogue was held on 6 December 2012 that led to the formation of the NECT. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was after the </span><a href=\"https://www.gov.za/issues/national-development-plan-2030\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Development Plan</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NDP) was adopted in August 2012.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dialogue led to the formulation of the Collaboration Education Framework and later the launch of NECT on 16 July 2013.</span><b> </b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nxasana said education in SA at the time was in a dire state, with only 24% of matriculants obtaining university entry passes.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1849390\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/ED_429409-1.jpg\" alt=\"National Education Collaboration Trust\" width=\"720\" height=\"401\" /> <em>Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga.
