Tolchard has determine</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">d</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> that the fossils, some of them </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">first collected </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">in the 1840s, belong to a group of ancient reptiles called Rauisuchians (pronounced row-a-su-kions).</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The species </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">lived in </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">the </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">T</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">riassic period, approximately 210</span></span> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">million years ago, and </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">died out </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">during the period’s mass</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">-</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">extinction event.</span></span></p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-427192\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/Tess-Rauisuchians-dinosaurs-inset-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1871\" /> An example of rauisuchian teeth in the Wits collections. Before dinosaurs came they filled the role of the big carnivores, they were the T-Rex of their day. And then</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">,</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> at the end of the Triassic period</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">,</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> you have this mass</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">-</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">extinction event which wiped out a whole lot of things, and these guys just didn’t make the cut.</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">”</span></span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">T</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">hough they are related to modern-day crocodiles, Rauisuchians and the crocodiles that live in South Africa today are very dissimilar, according to Tolchard.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">What’s left of crocs on earth today is not a good representation of what their ancestors were,” said Choiniere.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Rauisuchians lived on land</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> and</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> walked on their hind legs</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">,</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> and there is evidence that they grew between five and ten met</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">r</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">es tall. Like modern crocs, Rauisuchians had bony armour and were covered in scales, </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">while</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> their teeth were relatively similar to the teeth of today’s crocodiles.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Picture a modern-day crocodile, standing upright on its back legs, with its head squished forward, and you have a general idea of what Tolchard and other palaeontologists think Ruasuchians looked like.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Living crocs today are totally different from their closest extinct relatives. Most of croc history is actually about being on land. There</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> are</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> plant</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">-</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">eating crocs in the fossil record</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">;</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> there </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">are</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> filter</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">-</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">feeding crocs that are like whales,” said Choiniere.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">In fact, crocodiles came in myriad shapes and sizes, ranging from </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">10m </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Rauisuchians to tiny creatures the size of small dogs.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">We have fossils of crocs the size of chihuahuas downstairs, with long limbs. Imagine that running around,” Tolchard told </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>Daily Maverick</i></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">, laughing at the mental image of ankle-biter crocodiles with long, rickety limbs running around catching small animals.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">According to Tolchard, discovering the ancient crocodiles in South Africa is not only interesting</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> in itself but </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">also tells a story of what </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">the region’s </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">ecosystem looked like </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">just </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">before one of the </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">world </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">biggest extinctions</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">.</span></span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Studying past extinctions is very important to help us understand the extinction we are currently living in,” said Tolchard. “Studying what happened millions of years ago helps us predict what might happen in the future, particularly at this moment in time.”</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Today’s crocodiles are confined to the </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">t</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">ropics and are</span></span> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">n</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">o</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">t found in colder climates. But </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">as recently as </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">50</span></span> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">million years ago crocodile ancestors could be found in what is now the UK.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">T</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">hough the giant Ruasuchians did not survive the Triassic extinction, their current relatives appear primed to survive global heating. According to Tolchard, crocodiles will have to navigate habitat loss as rivers start to dry up, but they should be able to manage rising temperatures, unlike some other species.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Crocodiles will be net</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">t</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> winners, polar bears will be net</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">t</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> losers.</span></span> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The penguins aren’t going to do too well either,” said Choiniere. </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">H</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">uman</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">s</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> are also not well prepared for extreme temperature and weather changes.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Tolchard and Choiniere think it is important for </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">people </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">to understand that South Africa is not just home to the cradle of mankind but rather </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">has much other </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">weird and wonderful history dat</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">ing</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> back hundreds of millions of years.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">We have evidence of the first stages of multicellular life right up to the origins of humans,” Tolchard told </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>Daily Maverick</i></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">We give public talks and people’s minds are blown by the fact that South Africa had dinosaurs</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">;</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> the average person seems to think we didn’t have dinosaurs</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">,</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> for some reason. Before dinosaurs came they filled the role of the big carnivores, they were the T-Rex of their day. And then</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">,</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> at the end of the Triassic period</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">,</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> you have this mass</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">-</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">extinction event which wiped out a whole lot of things, and these guys just didn’t make the cut.</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">”</span></span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">T</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">hough they are related to modern-day crocodiles, Rauisuchians and the crocodiles that live in South Africa today are very dissimilar, according to Tolchard.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">What’s left of crocs on earth today is not a good representation of what their ancestors were,” said Choiniere.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Rauisuchians lived on land</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> and</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> walked on their hind legs</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">,</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> and there is evidence that they grew between five and ten met</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">r</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">es tall. Like modern crocs, Rauisuchians had bony armour and were covered in scales, </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">while</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> their teeth were relatively similar to the teeth of today’s crocodiles.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Picture a modern-day crocodile, standing upright on its back legs, with its head squished forward, and you have a general idea of what Tolchard and other palaeontologists think Ruasuchians looked like.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Living crocs today are totally different from their closest extinct relatives. Most of croc history is actually about being on land. There</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> are</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> plant</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">-</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">eating crocs in the fossil record</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">;</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> there </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">are</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> filter</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">-</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">feeding crocs that are like whales,” said Choiniere.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">In fact, crocodiles came in myriad shapes and sizes, ranging from </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">10m </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Rauisuchians to tiny creatures the size of small dogs.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">We have fossils of crocs the size of chihuahuas downstairs, with long limbs. Imagine that running around,” Tolchard told </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>Daily Maverick</i></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">, laughing at the mental image of ankle-biter crocodiles with long, rickety limbs running around catching small animals.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">According to Tolchard, discovering the ancient crocodiles in South Africa is not only interesting</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> in itself but </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">also tells a story of what </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">the region’s </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">ecosystem looked like </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">just </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">before one of the </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">world </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">biggest extinctions</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">.</span></span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Studying past extinctions is very important to help us understand the extinction we are currently living in,” said Tolchard. “Studying what happened millions of years ago helps us predict what might happen in the future, particularly at this moment in time.”</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Today’s crocodiles are confined to the </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">t</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">ropics and are</span></span> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">n</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">o</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">t found in colder climates. But </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">as recently as </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">50</span></span> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">million years ago crocodile ancestors could be found in what is now the UK.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">T</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">hough the giant Ruasuchians did not survive the Triassic extinction, their current relatives appear primed to survive global heating. According to Tolchard, crocodiles will have to navigate habitat loss as rivers start to dry up, but they should be able to manage rising temperatures, unlike some other species.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Crocodiles will be net</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">t</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> winners, polar bears will be net</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">t</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> losers.</span></span> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The penguins aren’t going to do too well either,” said Choiniere. </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">H</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">uman</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">s</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> are also not well prepared for extreme temperature and weather changes.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Tolchard and Choiniere think it is important for </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">people </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">to understand that South Africa is not just home to the cradle of mankind but rather </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">has much other </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">weird and wonderful history dat</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">ing</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> back hundreds of millions of years.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">We have evidence of the first stages of multicellular life right up to the origins of humans,” Tolchard told </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i>Daily Maverick</i></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">.</span></span></p>\r\n<p align=\"LEFT\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">We give public talks and people’s minds are blown by the fact that South Africa had dinosaurs</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">;</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> the average person seems to think we didn’t have dinosaurs</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">,</span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> for some reason.
