"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across the planet, animals — and the diseases they carry — are shifting to accommodate a globe on the fritz. And they’re not alone: Ticks, mosquitos, bacteria, algae, even fungi are on the move, shifting or expanding their historical ranges to adapt to climatic conditions that are changing at an extraordinary pace.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These changes are not happening in a vacuum. Deforestation, mining, agriculture, and urban sprawl are taking bites out of the globe’s remaining wild areas, contributing to biodiversity loss that’s occurring at a </span><a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/united-nations-north-america-us-news-ap-top-news-science-aaf1091c5aae40b0a110daaf04950672\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rate unprecedented in human history</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Populations of species that </span><a href=\"https://www.ecowatch.com/biodiversity-human-health.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">humans rely on for sustenance</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are dwindling and getting pushed into ever-smaller slices of habitat, creating new hotspots for diseases to jump from animals to humans.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the number of people experiencing extreme repercussions of a warming planet continues to grow. Climate change </span><a href=\"https://www.internal-displacement.org/global-report/grid2022/#:~:text=Conflict%2C%20violence%20and%20disasters%20triggered,breaking%20year%20for%20disaster%20displacement.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">displaces some 20 million every year</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> — people who need housing, medical care, food, and other essentials that put strain on already fragile systems that are growing ever more stressed.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of these factors create conditions ripe for human illness. Diseases old and new are becoming more prevalent, and even cropping up in places they’ve never been found before. Researchers have begun piecing together a patchwork of evidence that illuminates the formidable threat climate-driven diseases currently pose to human health — and the scope of the dangers to come.</span>\r\n\r\n<strong>Read more in Daily Maverick:</strong> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-03-17-urgent-course-correction-needed-on-climate-change-nhi/\">Urgent course correction needed on climate change, economic policy and NHI</a>\r\n<h4><b>Rising temperatures</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“This is not just something off in the future,” Neil Vora, a physician with the nonprofit Conservation International, said. “Climate change is here. People are suffering and dying right now.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that climate change </span><a href=\"https://www.cdc.gov/ncezid/what-we-do/climate-change-and-infectious-diseases/index.html#:~:text=As%20global%20temperatures%20rise%2C%20deadly,imported%20into%20the%20United%20States.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">influences the spread of disease</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a few major ways.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To escape rising temperatures in their native ranges, animals are </span><a href=\"https://viterbischool.usc.edu/news/2022/09/in-a-warmer-world-half-of-all-species-are-on-the-move-where-are-they-going/#:~:text=From%20bears%20to%20moose%20to,migrating%20northwards%20towards%20higher%20latitudes.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beginning to move to higher, cooler elevations</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, bringing diseases with them. That poses a threat to people living in those areas, and it also leads to dangerous intermingling between animal newcomers and existing species.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Animal migration</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bird flu, for example, has been </span><a href=\"https://grist.org/health/as-climate-change-disrupts-ecosystems-a-new-outbreak-of-bird-flu-spreads-to-mammals/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spreading with greater ease</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among wild animals as rising seas and other factors push nesting bird species inland, where they’re more likely to run into other species. Diseases that jump between species tend to have an easier time eventually making the leap to humans.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warmer winters and milder autumns and springs allow carriers of pathogens — ticks, mosquitos, and fleas, for example — to remain active for longer swaths of the year. Expanded active periods mean busier mating seasons and fewer casualties over the cold winter months. The Northeastern United States has seen a </span><a href=\"https://www.caryinstitute.org/our-expertise/disease-ecology/lyme-tick-borne-disease/climate-change-and-tick-borne-disease-risk#:~:text=Ticks%20are%20ranging%20farther%20and,putting%20new%20regions%20at%20risk.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">massive proliferation of Lyme disease-carrying black-legged ticks</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the past decade, with warmer winters playing a decisive role in that trend.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Extreme weather</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erratic weather patterns, such as periods of extreme drought and flooding, </span><a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26168924/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">create conditions for diseases to spread</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Cases of cholera, a water-borne bacterial disease, </span><a href=\"https://news.un.org/en/story/2022/12/1131787#:~:text=Global%20cholera%20surge%20likely%20accelerated%20by%20climate%20change%2C%20warns%20WHO,-16%20December%202022&text=Climate%20change%20has%20driven%20an,)%20everywhere%2C%E2%80%9D%20said%20Dr.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">skyrocket during the monsoon season</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in South Asian countries when flooding contaminates drinking water, especially in places that lack quality sanitation infrastructure. Valley fever, a fungal-borne infection caused by spores that grow in the soil in the Western US, proliferates during periods of rain.
