McKibben, whose 1989 classic </span></span></span><a href=\"http://billmckibben.com/end-of-nature.html\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"><i>The End of Nature</i></span></span></span></a><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> was the first text to introduce anthropogenic climate change to a general audience, is preparing his reader for the fact that his latest volume is going to be even bleaker. </span></span></span>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">More time has passed and we are deeper in the hole,” he writes. “The stakes feel very high, and the odds very long, and the trends very ominous. So, I have no doubt that there are other books that would offer readers a merrier literary experience.”</span></span></p>\r\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Likewise, there are other articles that would offer readers of </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"><i>Daily Maverick</i></span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> a merrier experience. Parts </span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-04-23-no-tomorrow-part-one-gwede-mantashe-climate-suicide-the-ancs-2019-election-manifesto/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">one</span></span></a><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> and </span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-05-01-no-tomorrow-part-two-why-the-da-thinks-climate-change-could-be-good-for-business/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">two</span></span></a><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> of this series weren’t bursting with reasons for hope, and this final piece in the trilogy won’t redeem them. The best we can do is follow McKibben and suggest that this isn’t about optimism or pessimism — it’s about realism.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">The reality, then, is that aside from South Africa’s Green Party, whose founder and former leader brought the party into </span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.groundup.org.za/article/head-green-party-versus-four-families-court/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">some disrepute</span></span></a><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> on the land rights issue in 2018, there isn’t much to choose from. The contradictions inherent to the manifestos of the ANC and DA can be found in equal measure in the manifestos of most of the others on the ballot paper, with the EFF </span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2019-EFF-MANIFESTO-FINAL.pdf\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">leading the pack</span></span></a><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> on impossible paradoxes. </span></span></span>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Brace yourself for this on page 138: </span></span></p>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The EFF government will establish a research and development centre focused on oil and gas refining and the development of clean coal and oil use by 2024, creating 2,000 jobs, 1,000 of which will be reserved for women and the youth.”</span></span></span></p>\r\n<a name=\"_GoBack\"></a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Clean oil use? While the manifesto neglects to tell us what that is, we do know that clean coal </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://cer.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Myth-of-Clean-Coal-Fact-Sheet_Final_November-2018.pdf\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">doesn’t exist</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">. As </span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"><i>Daily Maverick</i></span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> has reported, the phrase has been employed by energy minister </span></span></span></span><a href=\"http://www.globalcarbonatlas.org/en/CO2-emissions\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Jeff Radebe</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">, mining minister </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-04-23-no-tomorrow-part-one-gwede-mantashe-climate-suicide-the-ancs-2019-election-manifesto/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Gwede Mantashe</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> and finance minister </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-04-10-medupis-r6-8bn-new-development-bank-injection-and-other-brics-climate-crimes/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Tito Mboweni</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> to divert attention from the fact that South Africa, thanks to Eskom and Sasol, is the </span></span></span></span><a href=\"http://www.globalcarbonatlas.org/en/CO2-emissions\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">14th-largest</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> emitter of carbon dioxide in the world — we are, in truth, more than 70 million metric tons a year </span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"><i>ahead</i></span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> of the United Kingdom, which has just become the first country on Earth to </span></span></span></span><a href=\"http://time.com/5581615/uk-declares-climate-emergency/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">declare</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> a “climate emergency” in its House of Commons.</span></span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">In other circumstances — say, a circumstance where South African voters, like Democratic Party voters in the US, had </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/441344-climate-change-is-the-top-issue-for-registered-democratic-voters\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">indicated</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> that climate change was now their top electoral priority — our opposition parties would have seen a gap as wide as a barn door. Yet this existential threat to the future of voters everywhere is, for the South African electorate, still no more than a concept. </span></span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Why else have we seen almost zero opposition party campaigns around the floods that </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-05-03-kzn-mourns-71-flood-victims-during-provincial-prayer/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">killed 71 people</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> in KwaZulu-Natal in April, or around the ongoing drought that’s been </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-03-19-drought-and-domestic-violence-fallout-from-a-changing-climate/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">exacerbating domestic violence</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> in some of our poorest rural communities, or around the </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://public.wmo.int/en/media/news/another-unprecedented-tropical-cyclone-and-flooding-hits-mozambique\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">unprecedented tropical cyclones</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> that have recently hammered our neighbour to the north-east? </span></span></span></span>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Instead of calling out the ruling party for its failure to connect the dots on these extreme weather events, we get lines in the EFF manifesto like the following: </span></span></span></p>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The EFF government will work hand in glove with traditional leaders as well as Contralesa on diverse issues that include … climate change and the Green Revolution.” </span></span></span></p>\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">The Green Revolution, as historians of commercial agriculture will remember, has nothing to do with climate. It </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://study.com/academy/lesson/what-is-the-green-revolution-definition-benefits-and-issues.html\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">refers</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> to a period in the 1950s and 1960s when </span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">the global output of industrial farming saw a dramatic spike off the introduction of new chemical fertilisers, synthetic herbicides and pesticides. In other words, when it comes to protecting the environment for future generations, the Green Revolution is exactly what the EFF </span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"><i>doesn’t</i></span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> want to mention alongside climate change.</span></span></span></span>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">But hey, as long as it sounds good, right?</span></span></span></p>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This throw-it-all-in-and-see-what-sticks attitude is, mercifully, less obvious in the manifestos of some of the smaller parties. Here, the United Democratic Movement (UDM) stands out, with its refreshing acknowledgement that “</span>South Africans do not concern themselves with the environment, because of the notion that ‘it’s someone else’s problem’.” </span></span></p>\r\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">In the UDM’s </span></span></span><a href=\"http://udm.org.za/ud/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/190216.pdf\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">manifesto</span></span></a><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">, we get an unambiguous link drawn between social justice and climate justice — as contained in the statement that “it is imperative that the poor be uplifted to rescue our environment from permanent damage”.</span></span></span>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">We also get the promise that the “UDM government will implement a ‘Marshall Plan’ to save our natural heritage that shall identify, build and reward individuals, institutions and community-based organisations to rescue and conserve our environment”.</span></span></p>\r\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">With this reference to the recovery programme that kick-started the rebuilding of Western Europe after World War 2, the UDM displays its grasp of what the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) meant when it </span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.ipcc.ch/2018/10/08/summary-for-policymakers-of-ipcc-special-report-on-global-warming-of-1-5c-approved-by-governments/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">called</span></span></a><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">, in October 2018, for “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society”.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">But as the 2019 </span></span></span><a href=\"https://trees.org.za/content/uploads/2019/05/Action24_Environmental-Scorecard_Findings-2.pdf\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">environmental scorecard</span></span></a><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> of Action 24 demonstrates, the UDM manifesto does not</span></span></span><i> </i><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">set hard targets for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, out of the 11 parties analysed by Action 24, the EFF is the </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"><i>only party</i></span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> that commits itself to a number, stating on page 128 of its manifesto that “</span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">the EFF government will reduce carbon emissions by 10% by 2024”.</span></span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">At which point, if we don’t remember (as per McKibben) that engagement is better than despair, we’re likely to fall into the miserable hole that awaits the climate-conscious voter in the 2019 elections. Because not only is a 10% reduction by 2024 way off the 50% target that the IPCC is demanding by 2030, it’s also probably a sop. As the Action 24 scorecard shows, the EFF’s hard target is negated by the fact that it doesn’t call for a shift from fossil fuels to renewables — here, it’s only the </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.vfplus.org.za/2019-election-manifesto\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Freedom Front Plus</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> (FF+) and the </span></span></span></span><a href=\"http://greenpartyofsouthafrica.com/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Green Party</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> that do. </span></span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">In short, while some of the small parties may display an understanding of the crisis, nowhere does the South African voter get a full basket of mitigations to match the enormity of this challenge. The Green Party is way ahead on climate-friendly measures, and yet behind all but three parties (</span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.acdp.org.za/2019_manifesto\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">African Christian Democratic Party</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">, </span></span></span></span><a href=\"http://www.ifp.org.za/national-election-manifesto-launch-of-the-inkatha-freedom-party-ahead-of-the-2019-national-and-provincial-elections/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Inkatha Freedom Party</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> and FF+) on social justice and governance. </span></span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">As for </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://saconstitution.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/2019-Manifesto-DL_Booklet.pdf\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Cope</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> and the </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://cisp.cachefly.net/assets/articles/attachments/77548_good_manifesto.pdf\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Good</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> party, they mostly mirror the Green Party’s imbalance, with the </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/OfficialSRWP/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Socialist Revolutionary Workers Party</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> out of kilter the other way — that is, strong on the “just transition” to renewables for coal workers and weak on acknowledgment that South Africa is in the midst of a climate emergency </span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"><i>now</i></span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">. </span></span></span></span>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">An emergency that is only going to escalate, whether the parties contesting the 2019 elections get it or not.</span></span></p>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Climate change is not a normal political negotiation between different interests, where compromise makes obvious sense,” McKibben tells us in <i>Falter</i>.</span></span></p>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Climate change is a negotiation between human beings and physics, and physics doesn’t compromise.”</span></span></p>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">In this sense, there’s no option <i>but</i> engagement.
