"contents": "I am interested in people’s connection to the land in South Africa, and their unwavering commitment to it.\r\n\r\nI grew up on a farm in South Africa in a place called Dundee. I was raised there, among the animals and the people who also lived there.\r\n\r\nAt the beginning of 2021, I set out to do a photographic project titled Young Farmers. The project is based on individuals who are helping to build a better future for South Africa.\r\n\r\nThis project won the 2021 Sony World Photography Awards Student Competition and later grew into a larger photographic investigation of the land and our connections through it and with it.\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-01-30-a-better-future-for-all-2021-student-photography-competition/6153_8_20859_coenraadtorlage_southafrica_studentcompetition_buildingabetterfuture_2021/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-822834\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-822834\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/6153_8_20859_CoenraadTorlage_SouthAfrica_StudentCompetition_Buildingabetterfuture_2021-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" /></a> For the Young Farmers project, the photographer went in search of the most philanthropic leaders in his local community of rural Dundee in KwaZulu-Natal.
