Steenkamp’s family opposed his parole bid and were set to give verbal and written statements on the impact the murder had on them, their lawyer Tania Koen told </span><a href=\"https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/south-africas-pistorius-seeks-early-release-10-years-after-killing-girlfriend-2023-03-31/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters </span></i></a>before <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the hearing. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pistorius </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2013-02-14-analysis-after-the-murder-that-shocked-the-country-a-time-for-introspection/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> – a model and aspiring lawyer – in his Pretoria home on 14 February 2013. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trial of the former Paralympic gold medallist, a.k.a the Blade Runner, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2016-04-20-oscar-pistorius-new-look-at-evidence-suggests-bat-might-have-been-a-weapon/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drew worldwide interest when it got under way</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, in 2014. At the start of the proceedings, Pistorius pleaded not guilty to all charges including the “wilful and intentional murder” of Steenkamp, </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claiming that he had mistaken his girlfriend for an intruder when he pumped four bullets through the toilet door in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gauteng High Court Judge Thokozile Masipa believed Pistorius’s account of the shooting and convicted him of </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2014-10-13-oscar-pistorius-will-life-go-back-to-normal/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">culpable homicide</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sentencing him to five years in prison. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1628972\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/0000269755.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"432\" /> <em>Reeva Steenkamp’s parents Barry and June during an interview three days before what would’ve been their daughter’s 35th birthday on 16 August 2018. (Photo: Gallo Images / Netwerk24 / Lulama Zenzile)</em></p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December 2015, the Supreme Court of Appeal set aside Judge Masipa’s original verdict of culpable homicide and the finding that Pistorius could not have foreseen Steenkamp’s death, and ruled instead that Pretorius was indeed guilty of murder by </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dolus eventualis. </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supreme Court then ordered Masipa to give Pistorius a new sentence, which she later extended to six years. </span>\r\n\r\n<iframe id=\"doc_86229\" class=\"scribd_iframe_embed\" title=\"Media Statement - Oscar\" src=\"https://www.scribd.com/embeds/635156416/content?start_page=1&view_mode=scroll&access_key=key-9kY1l7mrTIKQRpUdvDmQ\" width=\"100%\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-auto-height=\"false\" data-aspect-ratio=\"0.7055599060297573\"></iframe>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That same court, in a ruling by Judge Willie Seriti in 2017, found that the six-year sentence handed down by Masipa was “shockingly lenient”, and imposed the mandatory minimum sentence for murder of 15 years, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2017-11-24-analysis-re-sentencing-of-oscar-pistorius-may-strengthen-importance-of-sentencing-guidelines/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick’s </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebecca Davis reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Since he had already served time, the duration of his sentence after Seriti’s ruling was 13 years and five months. Since he had already served time, the duration of his sentence after Seriti’s ruling was 13 years and five months.
