The contracts are worth more than R82-million. The department denies a conflict of interest but is investigating the matter. The ANC countered that there is a plan, which is well under way.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mkhize announced that another batch of 80,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine would arrive on Saturday, 27 February, and that most of the “teething problems” in administering the vaccine have been resolved. The delegates’ main concerns were over why the government is the sole procurer of vaccines and where this left the private sector in the roll-out. Mkhize and Health Department </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">director-general Dr Anban Pillay said the private sector could procure vaccines from the government and get contracts for storing and distributing vaccines.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the same briefing, the MECs of Health reported back on the progress of their roll-out. He applauded the province’s response and said the “Growing Gauteng Together” plan would be adjusted and pursued. Zukiswa Pikoli </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-02-23-david-makhura-confident-gauteng-will-bounce-back-from-the-impact-of-covid-19-storm/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outlines</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the plans he put forward. </span>\r\n\r\n<b>It will take two years to rebuild Durban’s economy</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over 6,000 companies closed and 304,459 people lost their jobs between April and June 2020 in eThekwini, according to its chief strategy officer Adrian Peters. He estimated that it would take about two years for the metropolitan municipality’s economy to recover to pre-pandemic levels. As Zukiswa Pikoli </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-02-24-ethekwini-municipality-it-will-take-at-least-two-years-to-rebuild-durbans-economy-in-the-wake-of-covid-19/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writes</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Peters was speaking during a webinar on the impact the pandemic has had on metros. </span>\r\n\r\n<b>Pandemic pushes unemployment to a record high</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Africa’s unemployment rate rose to 32.5% in the fourth quarter of 2020, which was a 1.7% rise from the third quarter of 2020. This means 701,000 more people were unemployed between the quarters and the total is now 7.2-million. The situation worsened despite most of the economy being open in that quarter. As Ray Mahlaka </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-02-23-more-damage-to-south-africas-labour-market-as-unemployment-hits-new-high/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writes</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this suggests that the labour market faces “permanent and worrying damage”.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Class of 2020 get their results</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pass rate for the matric Class of 2020 is 76.2%, a drop from 2019’s record 81.3% pass rate. Nonetheless, more pupils achieved a bachelor pass and a higher proportion came from non-fee paying schools, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-02-22-matric-results-more-university-entrance-passes-for-last-years-cohort-despite-a-decline-in-the-overall-national-pass-rate/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga. She praised the class of 2020 for the good results achieved under tough circumstances.
