The Mpumalanga authority, which licensed the Umbabat Reserve trophy hunt, showed Parliament two pictures last week. The live one, they said, was Skye, but it definitely wasn’t. The dead one, they said, was the hunted lion and </span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>not</i></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Skye, but its markings indicate that it most likely </span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>was</i></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">A high-definition rendering of Skye – who was often photographed by tourists – and the dead lion show the same distinctive marks below the left eye and the same nose scratches. </span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Analysing facial scars and eye markings on the picture presented to Parliament, Jason Turner, an independent ecologist with 20 years experience in identifying lions, found the facial markings on the dead lion to be “identical with those of the pride male named Skye”. </span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He added: “The ideal way to identify lions is by whisker spot pattern. The MTPA (Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Authority) photo was of very poor resolution. However, the other markings are diagnostic and</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">confirm the lion’s identity.”</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">A land owner within Umbabat, Charlie Lynam, who has followed and photographed Skye over many years, confirmed this.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The photograph of the dead lion does appear to be of Skye as it bears a number of his definitive and unique identification characteristics such as nose and eye scars,” Lynam said.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The photographer and ranger, Chad Cocking, whose image MTPA used claiming it was of Skye, said the lion pictured was part of a known coalition of two males in the eastern part of what was then Tanda Tula’s traversing concession.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Knowing this lion and knowing the dominant male lion of the Western Pride that the media has dubbed Skye, I can tell you that they are </span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><i>not the same lion</i>. I’m not sure where they obtained the image from, but it was not one that I personally submitted.”</span></span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-103533\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/Skye-inside-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"3248\" />\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The questions have to be asked: did the hunter shoot the wrong lion (in which case the outfitter should lose his licence)? What about the reserve representative who sanctioned the hunt? As all trophy lions have to be extensively identified beforehand, how was an “error” possible? Was the licensing authority, the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Authority, misled? Or, in submitting the wrong photo, is it attempting a cover-up? Did the MTPA attempt to deceive Parliament?</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Apart from misleading parliamentarians with the wrong photo, if the wrong lion shot </span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>was</i></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Skye, this raises serious questions about the professional hunter who conducted the hunt, the reserve representative who was present, as well as the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Authority as the oversight authority. </span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Last week Kruger National Park representatives supported the MTPA, assuring Parliament that the lion hunted was not Skye. The preliminary results from a Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) report also concluded that there was “no wrongdoing and that every effort was made to ensure that the wrong lion was not shot”.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Organisations within Umbabat have also been generating a smokescreen around the event. </span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A report by Nkhoro, an association of share-block landowners in the reserve, said:</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">“</span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">meeting</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">…</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">sought</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">to</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">review</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">the</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">photographic</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">evidence</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">of</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">all</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">the</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">photos</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">supplied</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">to</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">the</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hunting</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Outfitter</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Reserve</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Representative</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">prior</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">to</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">the</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">hunt…. In</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">comparing</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">the</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">post-hunting</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">pictures,</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">it</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">was</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">concluded</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">from</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">the</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">facial</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">features</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">scars</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">that</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">the</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">hunted</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">lion</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">was</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">not</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">the</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">same</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">as</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">the</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">lion</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">portrayed</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">in</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">the</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">earlier</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">provided</span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">pictures.”</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The Ingwelala board issued a statement saying the dead lion was not Skye.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">T</span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\">he hunted lion had worn down and broken teeth, a protruding spine (all signs of advanced age).”</span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skye did have a broken tooth, but was in magnificent shape. And it has been asked why a hunter would pay over a million rand to hunt a toothless old lion. </span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The board, too, was presumably not permitted to see the carcass. Was their assessment based on the “wrong” photographs that turned up in Parliament?</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-103534\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/Skye-inside-02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2828\" />\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Following the board’s weak-kneed response to Umbabat’s hunting fraternity, its chairperson resigned in disgust. When one of the specialists on the Task Team set up by the Ingwelala Board to investigate the hunt was refused access to the hunt photographs, he resigned in protest.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">There is mounting clamour about this lion hunt. International attention is growing and reference is being made to the bow-hunting of Cecil the Lion in Hwange, Zimbabwe in 2015, which occasioned a worldwide cascade of disgust. </span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The hunting of the Umbabat lion has also catalysed a rethink about the relation of Kruger Park and private reserves along its western boundary. It was investigated at a two-day Parliamentary colloquium in August and at another inquiry by the Portfolio Committee on Environmental Affairs last week.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">According to a </span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.parliament.gov.za/press-releases/environmental-affairs-committee-believes-agreement-between-kruger-national-park-and-private-reserves-should-be-revised\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><u>government statement</u></span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> following the inquiry:</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The recent hunting of a male lion which took place in Umbabat Private Nature Reserve in Mpumalanga on the 7</span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><sup><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">th</span></span></sup></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> of June 2018 highlighted wider issues of concern, both in terms of law governing hunting in the Kruger National Park and the contractual arrangements between the Kruger National Park and the Association of Private Nature Reserves (APNR).”</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The committee chairperson, Phillemon Mapulane, said discussions needed to take place around the current protocol that allows hunting of animals in the Greater Kruger National Park’s open system after the removal of fences between the Kruger and the APNR.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The committee wants this protocol to be interrogated to properly account for this system, for which the Kruger National Park prohibits hunting inside the park, but nonetheless animals are hunted when they roam over to private nature reserves.”</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Noting that the dead lion was baited, the committee also stated that “baiting as a form of hunting of TOPS-listed species should cease immediately”.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">In a submission to the colloquium, Umbabat and the MTPA were accused of ducking and diving about the lion hunt, which they hotly denied at the hearing last week. But they’ve been unwilling to allow independent verification of the hunted lion’s carcass, saying “it belongs to the hunter and needs his permission”. </span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">They also disallowed sight of the hunt report which would include detailed pictures of the hunted lion. When a copy of the permit was demanded, only a redacted copy was supplied with names deleted.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skye has a double moon brand on his right flank, so an </span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>in-situ</i></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> ID would be easy. Refusal has fuelled speculation. The submission of incorrect photographs to Parliament simply adds to suspicion that they have something to hide.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Given the questions around the veracity of the pictures presented to Parliament, questions must now be asked about the authenticity of the photographic evidence upon which the Umbabat Reserve representative, Kruger Park, the DEA and the MTPA based their assurances that Skye was not shot. At any hunt, hundreds of pictures are generally taken, but all Parliament was shown (and the only photo ever made public) was a slightly blurred face. </span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Most decent cameras take images in RAW format which cannot be altered and which contain metadata of time and often location of the photograph. No such images were provided to Parliament but should now be demanded. </span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Before the hunt, the Umbabat warden, Brian Havermann, was given clear photographs of Skye and promised Ingwelala that this lion would not be hunted. During the days that followed, a concerned Ingwelala member continued to supply Havemann with information about the location of Skye and his pride in good faith to ensure he was not shot. In retrospect, this may have aided the hunters to locate and kill him. </span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u><b>DM</b></u></span></span></span>",
