Under the strapline “environmental care”, the South African fossil fuel giant is </span></span></span><a href=\"https://society.sasol.com/sasol-creates-awareness-for-qatars-natural-environment/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">inviting readers</span></span></a><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> to explore the “remarkable biodiversity” of the Arabian Gulf state. Sasol, it turns out</span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">, has partnered with an organisation called Friends of the Environment </span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">to produce a “state-of-the-art, interactive and multimedia mobile phone app and website”.</span></span></span></span>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Apparently, the Qatar e-Nature app is “award-winning”. Also, it is available “for free” on Android, iOS and Windows platforms. In 2018, we are told, pupils from more than 100 Qatari schools took part in a contest that “tested their knowledge of plants, mammals, insects, reptiles, birds and marine life” in the oil-soaked nation, an initiative based entirely on the images and text in the app. </span></span></span></p>\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">How does the </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.researchgate.net/publication/303907654_Air_Pollution_in_Qatar_Causes_and_Challenges\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">fallout from the burning of fossil fuels</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> affect the flora and fauna in Qatar’s actual offline ecosystems? Sasol doesn’t say. What’s the point of teaching kids the names of things that are being choked to death by the country’s </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/middle-east/qatar/articles/facts-about-qatar/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">record-breaking levels</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> of air pollution? Again, Sasol gives us nothing. Why does Sasol even care about Qatar? Once again, crickets.</span></span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">But there is, it seems, something that Qatar and Sasol have in common — where the former is the </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://knoema.com/atlas/ranks/CO2-emissions-per-capita\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">largest C0</span></span></span></a><a href=\"https://knoema.com/atlas/ranks/CO2-emissions-per-capita\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><sub><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">2 </span></span></span></sub></span></a><a href=\"https://knoema.com/atlas/ranks/CO2-emissions-per-capita\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> emitter per capita</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> on Earth, the latter owns and operates the </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php/Sasol#cite_note-9\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">single-largest point source</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> of carbon emissions on Earth, being the infamous coal-to-liquid plant in Secunda, Mpumalanga, which is based on technology </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://slate.com/business/2006/10/the-nazi-germany-apartheid-south-africa-invention-that-could-make-oil-obsolete.html\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">developed by the Nazis</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> and perfected by the apartheid regime.</span></span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">For such remarkable tone-deafness, as well as for the </span></span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><a href=\"https://www.sasol.com/extras/SR_2017/environmental/climate-change-and-energy-efficiency.php\">67 million tons of </a><a href=\"https://knoema.com/atlas/ranks/CO2-emissions-per-capita\">C0</a></span></span><a href=\"https://knoema.com/atlas/ranks/CO2-emissions-per-capita\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><sub><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">2</span></span></span></sub></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> it spews into the atmosphere every year — a figure that renders it a carbon criminal on par with </span></span></span></span><a href=\"http://www.globalcarbonatlas.org/en/CO2-emissions\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Oman</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">, another oil-soaked Gulf state — the Sasol head office in Sandton, Johannesburg, has been chosen as a major site of protest for 20 September. The posters that advertise the march invite students from Wits University to “confront carbon capital” and ask the rest of the public to join “a human chain for climate justice” on the periphery of the building. </span></span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-419547\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/bloom-climateprotestPreview-inset-4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"905\" height=\"1280\" />\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-419548\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/bloom-climateprotestPreview-inset-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1132\" height=\"1600\" />\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">The hashtags across the top of both posters are instructive: #wecantbreathe and #pollutionkills. This, of course, is a reference to the “</span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-06-10-deadly-air-ramaphosa-named-in-multi-billion-rand-coal-pollution-court-case/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Deadly Air</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">” matter lodged in the Pretoria High Court in June 2019. The pivotal fact in this landmark case, which names President Cyril Ramaphosa</span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> as a respondent, is that the South African government has known about the lethal levels of air pollution on the Mpumalanga and east Gauteng Highveld since at least 2007.</span></span></span></span>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In that time, with an international expert calculating an early death toll in the region of at least 650 a year — mortalities caused by lung cancer, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, strokes and lower respiratory infection — it has done nothing to call the polluters to account.</span></span></span></p>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">But if Eskom and Sasol have (literally) been allowed to get away with murder, why not take the protests to a body politic that’s been looking the other way?</span></span></span></p>\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Of the 18 climate protests planned for 20 September across the length and breadth of the country, from the big cities to Graaff-Reinet in the central Karoo to the </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-08-12-food-drought-and-fury-un-land-report-brings-the-truth-to-sas-climate-corrupt/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">drought-stricken</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> Eastern Cape towns of Makhanda and Mount Frere, many will do exactly that. Cape Town protesters will meet on the corner of Cambridge Street and Keizergracht in Zonnebloem to deliver a list of demands to the government that includes the official declaration of a climate emergency, the halting of all new fossil fuel projects, the conversion of the energy sector to 100% renewables by 2030 and the creation of a mandatory education curriculum for all South African schools on climate change and its effects.</span></span></span></span>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-419544\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/bloom-climateprotestPreview-inset-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"891\" height=\"1280\" /></p>\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">The fight for social justice and environmental justice is the same fight,” </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://act.350.org/event/globalclimatestrike/17450?source=fb_ad_school_strike_160919&utm_medium=fb_ad&utm_source=350_global&utm_campaign=school_strike_160919\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">notes</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> the South African office of 350.org, the world’s largest climate activist NGO, with respect to this march.</span></span></span></span>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">We cannot solve any other social issue if we do not have a liveable planet with access to safe, clean drinking water and food.”</span></span></span></p>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Like the Co-operative and Policy Alternative Centre (Copac), which is behind the siege of Sasol, the organisers of the Cape Town march have done their homework — South Africans, whose nerves have been shot by intense mass actions against femicide, xenophobia and non-existent service delivery, won’t turn up for the climate strikes unless they get how it affects them personally. </span></span></span></p>\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">In this sense, as </span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"><i>Daily Maverick</i></span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">’s Our Burning Planet has been at pains to </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-06-27-fuel-most-foul-the-purgatory-times-for-sasol-and-other-oil-majors/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">point out</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">, it’s darkly convenient that the corporations poisoning our soil, air and water also happen to be the corporations driving climate collapse. Beyond such expediencies, though, there are other reasons for taking the fight to South Africa’s largest oil company, all of which are archetypal of the climate justice movement at large.</span></span></span></span>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">First,” says Copac’s Vishwas Satgar, “we are trying to address the weaknesses of the UN multilateral processes that have not been able to change the behaviour of the carbon criminals. Second, we want Sasol to put a just transition plan on the table that sets out how it is going to shut itself down, so that we as a country can get to zero emissions. Third, we are raising awareness about the role of carbon capital in causing global heating.”</span></span></span></p>\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">It’s a tall order, particularly on the second point, but then the elite-to-grassroots momentum that’s been gathering around the strikes is in every way unprecedented. Even the uber-plutocrat Bill Gates, in an </span></span></span></span><a href=\"http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/09/bill-gates-on-addressing-climate-change.html\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">interview</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> with David Wallace-Wells of </span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"><i>New York Magazine</i></span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">, has just conceded that there’s nothing worthy of the word “plan” when it comes to how governments are tackling the crisis.</span></span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">In South Africa, which is warming at </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2018-11-07-interview-south-africa-climate-change-hot-spot/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">twice the global average</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">, less than 20% of the population is aware of the existential threat — a statistic, according to Satgar, that begs for this opportunity created by global citizen action not to be squandered.</span></span></span></span>\r\n<p lang=\"en-ZA\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Which, presumably, is why the other major protest in Johannesburg on 20 September, planned for kick-off at 10am at Pieter Roos Park on Empire Road, is a collaborative effort between Earthlife Africa, Greenpeace Africa, 350 Africa and GenderCC.</span></span></span></p>\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-419545\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/bloom-climateprotestPreview-inset-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"908\" height=\"1280\" />\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">This march is expected to be joined by members of Saftu and Fedusa, local trade union federations that have endorsed the international strikes. Among </span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">the recipients of the marchers’ demands will be the South African delegation to the </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.climatechangenews.com/2019/09/16/un-climate-action-summit/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">UN Climate Action Summit</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> in New York on 23 September — the core demand, it seems, is for the government to commit to action that limits global heating to </span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">1.5°C above pre-industrial levels</span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">.</span></span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">There are two disheartening challenges here, the first of which came to light on the evening of 18 September, when it was </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.ft.com/content/1902158a-d994-11e9-8f9b-77216ebe1f17?segmentid=acee4131-99c2-09d3-a635873e61754ec6&fbclid=IwAR12v1LvNPebz8Tj9qx2-zhHi4dIpGcqi5SViTsuecJO2gwX_KByjHUFgfw\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">revealed</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> that South Africa, along with Japan and Australia, would be denied a speaking part at the New York summit. The zero-tolerance approach is a function of the decree that has just been handed down by UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres, who declared that all countries attending the summit must stop building new coal power plants, reduce their fossil fuel subsidies and commit to net zero emissions by 2050.</span></span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Aside from the delicate matter of Medupi and Kusile, the mammoth coal-fired power stations whose exorbitant and </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-07-01-coal-subsidies-sa-bags-fourth-place-in-g20-climate-collapse-derby/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">, our team of 33 delegates at the talks were hiding a “secret” and “confidential” memo that instructed them to refrain from committing to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s landmark </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.ipcc.ch/sr15/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">special report</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> on global warming of </span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">1.5°C</span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span report, a collaboration of 91 climate scientists from 40 countries, lays out in devastating detail how modern nation-states begin to lose their ability to cope with extreme weather events, food and water shortages, civil conflict, breakdown of infrastructure and mass migrations at levels of heating above </span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">1.5°C. </span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">And so the other disheartening challenge faced by the protesters who take their cue from the report is the list of names who now believe that the <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">target is unachievable — a list that includes the techno-optimist Bill Gates, the former chair of the IPCC </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-07-12-climate-realpolitik-south-africas-secret-and-confidential-slide-to-the-wrong-side-of-history/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> in July 2019 that shows how we’re already locked into carbon emissions that take us way beyond the</span></span></span></span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">threshold in the short-term.</span></span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">Still, the apparent hopelessness of the situation, as </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/what-if-we-stopped-pretending\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">articulated</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> by the novelist Jonathan Franzen in the </span></span></span></span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\"> for his remarks, his message wasn’t all that different from the writer Derek Jensen, a cult-like figure among environmentalists and naturalists.</span></span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">“<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-ZA\">When hope dies,” Jensen </span></span></span></span><a href=\"https://orionmagazine.org/article/beyond-hope/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span
