"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 7 April the news of the death of Elvis Nyathi inflamed social tensions around the work of Operation Dudula, a self-appointed watchdog on the issue of illegal immigrants. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centre for Analytics and Behavioural Change found that conversations about Nyathi were present on multiple digital platforms like YouTube, news sites and forums. However, the largest volume of conversation was found on Twitter, where posts that contained the name Elvis Nyathi reached a peak on 8 April, with almost 6,000 mentions.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1238966\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.19.21.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"261\" /> Conversation volume growth for the name Elvis Nyathi.</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The earliest reference to the name on Twitter was at 7.50am on 7 April. It was found in a </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/ludidi3003/status/1511944452293677057\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that claimed Nyathi is a clan name used in both South Africa and Zimbabwe. This information was shared along with #operationdudula, #dudulamovement and #putsouthaficansfirst.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1238967\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.19.30.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"437\" />Early in the conversation, one of the trending topics within the Elvis Nyathi conversation was “Tembisa10”. This can be seen in Figure 3 below where the phrase Tembisa 10 appeared among the red trending topics to the right of the graph.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1238968\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.19.43.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"282\" /> Tembisa 10 appears in trending topics about Elvis Nyathi.</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The phrase appears to have been primarily used as a keyword that was posted to amplify specific content. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1238969 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.20.04.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"718\" /> Post containing Tembisa 10.</p>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1238970 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.20.50.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"543\" /> Post containing Tembisa 10.</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Tembisa 10 trend appeared on the day that the SA National Editors’ Forum </span><a href=\"https://ewn.co.za/2022/04/07/sanef-calls-for-removal-of-fake-tembisa-10-story-from-global-awards-shortlist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labelled</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the story of the Tembisa 10 as ludicrous and an embarrassment to South African journalism. It is clear that keywords like #OperationDudula or #SenzoMeyiwa were not used. This may have been done to manipulate the Twitter algorithm that groups content based on the keywords. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graphic content was shared on various media platforms as South Africans and foreigners tried to understand how such a violent hate crime could have taken place.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The verified account of Professor Jonathan Moyo </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/ProfJNMoyo/status/1513205302530875398\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">posted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an image of the graphic content that was shared on </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SABC News</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about Nyathi’s death and referred to the act as “Afrophobia”. Moyo is Zimbabwe’s former minister of higher and tertiary education, science and technology development.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reflecting this thought, the project director of the Nigerian social advocacy group </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/hubngr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connect Hub NG</span></a> <a href=\"https://twitter.com/SavvyRinu/status/1512324139272581120\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “South Africans are not angry at immigrants. They are only angry at African immigrants”. This post received more than 7,000 likes and over 1,600 retweets. These figures are far higher than the posts that were used to amplify hashtags like #operationdudula and #putsouthaficansfirst (misspelt in the data).</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1238971\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.21.06.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"320\" /> Post claiming that South Africans are only angry at African immigrants.</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This implies that more unique Twitter account holders resonated with the type of message in Figure 6 than they did with the content that was being amplified in a more coordinated way about Operation Dudula and Nyathi. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://twitter.com/AndreaBastoni_/status/1512346344484134913\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responding</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Connect Hub project director, @AndreaBastoni tweeted: “I hope Operation Dudula soldiers find you and deal with you the way they did with Mr Nyathi”. This was counter to the information that another account that regularly tweets content relating to the Put South Africans First movement put out, stating: “There is no link between OD and the incident at Diepsloot”.</span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1238973\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.21.24.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"382\" />\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1238975\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.21.45.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"849\" /> Claim of no link between Dudula and Nyathi.</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking closer at the @AndreaBastoni account, which is open to the public on Twitter (Figure 9), the nationality of this account holder as Italian is questionable as the account mostly retweets obscure South African content that is in English or one of the official South African languages (Figure 10). Furthermore, the location of the account has been listed as Polokwane.</span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1238978\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.21.59.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"574\" />\r\n<h4><b>Signore_Bastoni account</b></h4>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1238980\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.22.07.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"710\" /> Signore_Bastoni account retweeting South African content that is in one of the official South African languages.</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the graphic content that was shared, a video was </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/PatieMncube/status/1512186064689152003\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">posted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a man being beaten with sticks and set alight as community members stood in a circle and watched the torture. The person posting the video asked: “Is this the guy?” It is not clear if this is really a video of Nyathi or a video of another incident. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1238982\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.22.23.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"841\" /> Video of a man set alight and beaten.</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/KingKAzania/status/1512441967204089857\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweet</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about Nyathi, which received more than 2,000 likes, and was retweeted by South African author and political analyst Eusebius McKaiser, said that Nyathi and his nephew Felix specialised in “smart gardening” in their spare time.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1238984\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.22.35.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"640\" /> Claim that Nyathi and his nephew taught the community about gardening.</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This information runs counter to the narrative that Nyathi was a drug dealer in the community of Diepsloot who was attacked because citizens were tired that nothing was being done to stop his alleged criminal activities. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A topic that also trended within the Nyathi conversation on Twitter was that of seven people who lost their lives. Based on the trending topics shown in Figure 3 above, phrases like “7 south africans” and “killed 7 women” were driven in posts that claimed that seven South Africans were killed by foreigners. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1238985\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.22.53.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"698\" height=\"865\" /> Post claiming seven South Africans were killed.</p>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1238986\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.23.12.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"638\" height=\"701\" /> Post claiming seven South Africans were killed by Zimbabweans.</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News reports presented conflicting information about the killings.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 6 April, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News24</span></i> <a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/bheki-cele-attempts-to-restore-calm-after-bloody-weekend-in-diepsloot-20220406\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that seven South Africans were murdered over the weekend beginning on 1 April. On the same day, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SowetanLIVE</span></i> <a href=\"https://www.sowetanlive.co.za/news/south-africa/2022-04-06-bheki-cele-in-diepsloot-where-furious-residents-say-crime-is-out-of-control/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that seven people (no nationalities given) were murdered over the same weekend. The article states that 200 protesters then gathered outside Diepsloot police station to address Police Minister Bheki Cele about these and other criminal incidents that were plaguing the community. During an address at the protest, Cele said: “For the past weekend, approximately seven people were killed in the area, which then prompted the unrest.” In the aftermath of the protest, Nyathi was burned alive.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 7 April, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Citizen</span></i> <a href=\"https://www.citizen.co.za/news/south-africa/protests/3070364/diepsloot-protests-one-man-killed-7-april-2022/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that four people were murdered over the weekend beginning on 1 April. Newly elected Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola stated “...we are aware that there are four people murdered”. On 10 April, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-04-10-bheki-diepsloot-10\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that six people had been killed in Diepsloot over the past few weeks, including Nyathi. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conflicting number and nationalities of people murdered in Diepsloot over the weekend beginning on 1 April in reports by the media and the SA Police Service have led to confusion. The exact timelines and locations of when and where these murders took place appear to be uncertain, with sources reporting them to have occurred over the first weekend of April and others over the past few weeks.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also not clear if all of the murders occurred within Diepsloot itself or if surrounding areas were included. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A digital </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/54Battalion/status/1512095573033246724\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">response</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to these claims from an account associated with the EFF asked for an investigation into the news to ensure that the story hadn’t been cooked up.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1238987\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.23.24.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"377\" /> Call from online EFF supporter requesting an investigation into the alleged deaths of seven South Africans at the hands of Zimbabweans in Diepsloot.</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An inspection of the hashtags that were trending within posts about xenophobia, foreigners and immigrants between 5 and 10 April shows the top 10 hashtags. The size of the word in the image below indicates its volume relative to the surrounding hashtags.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1238988\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.23.35.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"307\" /> Top 10 hashtags in the conversation.</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first theme that stood out was an attack on the media and the EFF. Raking in thousands of likes and retweets, tweets like those seen in figures 18 and 19 below tried to paint the picture that South African media can’t be trusted because they are not covering events that appeared to be of concern to those tweeting #operationdudula.</span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1238989\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.23.40.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"429\" />\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1238990\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.23.46.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"389\" />\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The claims that certain media houses do not cover important stories as they unfold also took place during the riots and looting last July. Messages like those shown in figures 21 and 22 below are examples of such posts from July 2021.</span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1238991\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.23.54.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"533\" />\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1238992\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.24.11.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"767\" />\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another clear theme that emerged from the hashtags was individual stories that don’t appear to have been confirmed by any official body. These posts reported on incidents of crime that were allegedly carried out by foreigners. The topics that they covered appeared to be focused on existing weaknesses in society, like </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/MosaRoccoII/status/1512413728964333569\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drugs</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/katlegoktee1998/status/1511660012501880840\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">murder</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a police official, </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/Jonathank38/status/1510914680734334978\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fraud</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using South African ID numbers to access Sassa grants and the </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/Kea91492014/status/1512666827591237637\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hijacking</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and recovery of a </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/VehicleTrackerz/status/1511725694891577351\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stolen</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Toyota Hilux by someone allegedly driving toward the Zimbabwean border. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No evidence was offered to prove any of the accusations made in these posts. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As uncertainty around the message of the death of seven people prevailed, this lack of knowledge was used to manipulate online discourse surrounding the death of Nyathi and potentially present a justification for his killing by a mob outside the police station at Diepsloot. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the protesters are said to have gathered to address service delivery issues in the area, online the protest and its fallout were driven by hashtags like #OperationDudula and #PutSouthAfricansFirst. </span><b>DM</b>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centre for Analytics and Behavioural Change (CABC) is a non-profit organisation established to track and counter misinformation and disinformation, fake news and divisive and polarising rhetoric that is promulgated online to undermine social cohesion, democratic integrity, and the stability of nation-states. </span></i>",

"description": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 7 April the news of the death of Elvis Nyathi inflamed social tensions around the work of Operation Dudula, a self-appointed watchdog on the issue of illegal immigrants. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centre for Analytics and Behavioural Change found that conversations about Nyathi were present on multiple digital platforms like YouTube, news sites and forums. However, the largest volume of conversation was found on Twitter, where posts that contained the name Elvis Nyathi reached a peak on 8 April, with almost 6,000 mentions.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1238966\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1238966\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.19.21.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"261\" /> Conversation volume growth for the name Elvis Nyathi.[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The earliest reference to the name on Twitter was at 7.50am on 7 April. It was found in a </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/ludidi3003/status/1511944452293677057\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that claimed Nyathi is a clan name used in both South Africa and Zimbabwe. This information was shared along with #operationdudula, #dudulamovement and #putsouthaficansfirst.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1238967\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.19.30.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"437\" />Early in the conversation, one of the trending topics within the Elvis Nyathi conversation was “Tembisa10”. This can be seen in Figure 3 below where the phrase Tembisa 10 appeared among the red trending topics to the right of the graph.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1238968\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1238968\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.19.43.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"282\" /> Tembisa 10 appears in trending topics about Elvis Nyathi.[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The phrase appears to have been primarily used as a keyword that was posted to amplify specific content. </span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1238969\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"676\"]<img class=\"wp-image-1238969 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.20.04.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"718\" /> Post containing Tembisa 10.[/caption]\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1238970\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"wp-image-1238970 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.20.50.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"543\" /> Post containing Tembisa 10.[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Tembisa 10 trend appeared on the day that the SA National Editors’ Forum </span><a href=\"https://ewn.co.za/2022/04/07/sanef-calls-for-removal-of-fake-tembisa-10-story-from-global-awards-shortlist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labelled</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the story of the Tembisa 10 as ludicrous and an embarrassment to South African journalism. It is clear that keywords like #OperationDudula or #SenzoMeyiwa were not used. This may have been done to manipulate the Twitter algorithm that groups content based on the keywords. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graphic content was shared on various media platforms as South Africans and foreigners tried to understand how such a violent hate crime could have taken place.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The verified account of Professor Jonathan Moyo </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/ProfJNMoyo/status/1513205302530875398\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">posted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an image of the graphic content that was shared on </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SABC News</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about Nyathi’s death and referred to the act as “Afrophobia”. Moyo is Zimbabwe’s former minister of higher and tertiary education, science and technology development.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reflecting this thought, the project director of the Nigerian social advocacy group </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/hubngr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connect Hub NG</span></a> <a href=\"https://twitter.com/SavvyRinu/status/1512324139272581120\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “South Africans are not angry at immigrants. They are only angry at African immigrants”. This post received more than 7,000 likes and over 1,600 retweets. These figures are far higher than the posts that were used to amplify hashtags like #operationdudula and #putsouthaficansfirst (misspelt in the data).</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1238971\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1238971\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.21.06.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"320\" /> Post claiming that South Africans are only angry at African immigrants.[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This implies that more unique Twitter account holders resonated with the type of message in Figure 6 than they did with the content that was being amplified in a more coordinated way about Operation Dudula and Nyathi. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://twitter.com/AndreaBastoni_/status/1512346344484134913\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responding</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Connect Hub project director, @AndreaBastoni tweeted: “I hope Operation Dudula soldiers find you and deal with you the way they did with Mr Nyathi”. This was counter to the information that another account that regularly tweets content relating to the Put South Africans First movement put out, stating: “There is no link between OD and the incident at Diepsloot”.</span>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1238973\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.21.24.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"382\" />\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1238975\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"614\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1238975\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.21.45.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"849\" /> Claim of no link between Dudula and Nyathi.[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking closer at the @AndreaBastoni account, which is open to the public on Twitter (Figure 9), the nationality of this account holder as Italian is questionable as the account mostly retweets obscure South African content that is in English or one of the official South African languages (Figure 10). Furthermore, the location of the account has been listed as Polokwane.</span>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1238978\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.21.59.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"574\" />\r\n<h4><b>Signore_Bastoni account</b></h4>\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1238980\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1238980\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.22.07.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"710\" /> Signore_Bastoni account retweeting South African content that is in one of the official South African languages.[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the graphic content that was shared, a video was </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/PatieMncube/status/1512186064689152003\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">posted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a man being beaten with sticks and set alight as community members stood in a circle and watched the torture. The person posting the video asked: “Is this the guy?” It is not clear if this is really a video of Nyathi or a video of another incident. </span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1238982\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1238982\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.22.23.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"841\" /> Video of a man set alight and beaten.[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/KingKAzania/status/1512441967204089857\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweet</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about Nyathi, which received more than 2,000 likes, and was retweeted by South African author and political analyst Eusebius McKaiser, said that Nyathi and his nephew Felix specialised in “smart gardening” in their spare time.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1238984\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1238984\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.22.35.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"640\" /> Claim that Nyathi and his nephew taught the community about gardening.[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This information runs counter to the narrative that Nyathi was a drug dealer in the community of Diepsloot who was attacked because citizens were tired that nothing was being done to stop his alleged criminal activities. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A topic that also trended within the Nyathi conversation on Twitter was that of seven people who lost their lives. Based on the trending topics shown in Figure 3 above, phrases like “7 south africans” and “killed 7 women” were driven in posts that claimed that seven South Africans were killed by foreigners. </span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1238985\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"698\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1238985\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.22.53.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"698\" height=\"865\" /> Post claiming seven South Africans were killed.[/caption]\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1238986\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"638\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1238986\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.23.12.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"638\" height=\"701\" /> Post claiming seven South Africans were killed by Zimbabweans.[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News reports presented conflicting information about the killings.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 6 April, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News24</span></i> <a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/bheki-cele-attempts-to-restore-calm-after-bloody-weekend-in-diepsloot-20220406\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that seven South Africans were murdered over the weekend beginning on 1 April. On the same day, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SowetanLIVE</span></i> <a href=\"https://www.sowetanlive.co.za/news/south-africa/2022-04-06-bheki-cele-in-diepsloot-where-furious-residents-say-crime-is-out-of-control/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that seven people (no nationalities given) were murdered over the same weekend. The article states that 200 protesters then gathered outside Diepsloot police station to address Police Minister Bheki Cele about these and other criminal incidents that were plaguing the community. During an address at the protest, Cele said: “For the past weekend, approximately seven people were killed in the area, which then prompted the unrest.” In the aftermath of the protest, Nyathi was burned alive.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 7 April, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Citizen</span></i> <a href=\"https://www.citizen.co.za/news/south-africa/protests/3070364/diepsloot-protests-one-man-killed-7-april-2022/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that four people were murdered over the weekend beginning on 1 April. Newly elected Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola stated “...we are aware that there are four people murdered”. On 10 April, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-04-10-bheki-diepsloot-10\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that six people had been killed in Diepsloot over the past few weeks, including Nyathi. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conflicting number and nationalities of people murdered in Diepsloot over the weekend beginning on 1 April in reports by the media and the SA Police Service have led to confusion. The exact timelines and locations of when and where these murders took place appear to be uncertain, with sources reporting them to have occurred over the first weekend of April and others over the past few weeks.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also not clear if all of the murders occurred within Diepsloot itself or if surrounding areas were included. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A digital </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/54Battalion/status/1512095573033246724\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">response</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to these claims from an account associated with the EFF asked for an investigation into the news to ensure that the story hadn’t been cooked up.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1238987\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1238987\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.23.24.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"377\" /> Call from online EFF supporter requesting an investigation into the alleged deaths of seven South Africans at the hands of Zimbabweans in Diepsloot.[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An inspection of the hashtags that were trending within posts about xenophobia, foreigners and immigrants between 5 and 10 April shows the top 10 hashtags. The size of the word in the image below indicates its volume relative to the surrounding hashtags.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1238988\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1238988\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.23.35.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"307\" /> Top 10 hashtags in the conversation.[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first theme that stood out was an attack on the media and the EFF. Raking in thousands of likes and retweets, tweets like those seen in figures 18 and 19 below tried to paint the picture that South African media can’t be trusted because they are not covering events that appeared to be of concern to those tweeting #operationdudula.</span>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1238989\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.23.40.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"429\" />\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1238990\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.23.46.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"389\" />\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The claims that certain media houses do not cover important stories as they unfold also took place during the riots and looting last July. Messages like those shown in figures 21 and 22 below are examples of such posts from July 2021.</span>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1238991\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.23.54.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"533\" />\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1238992\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Screenshot-2022-04-18-at-12.24.11.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"767\" />\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another clear theme that emerged from the hashtags was individual stories that don’t appear to have been confirmed by any official body. These posts reported on incidents of crime that were allegedly carried out by foreigners. The topics that they covered appeared to be focused on existing weaknesses in society, like </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/MosaRoccoII/status/1512413728964333569\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drugs</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/katlegoktee1998/status/1511660012501880840\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">murder</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a police official, </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/Jonathank38/status/1510914680734334978\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fraud</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using South African ID numbers to access Sassa grants and the </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/Kea91492014/status/1512666827591237637\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hijacking</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and recovery of a </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/VehicleTrackerz/status/1511725694891577351\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stolen</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Toyota Hilux by someone allegedly driving toward the Zimbabwean border. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No evidence was offered to prove any of the accusations made in these posts. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As uncertainty around the message of the death of seven people prevailed, this lack of knowledge was used to manipulate online discourse surrounding the death of Nyathi and potentially present a justification for his killing by a mob outside the police station at Diepsloot. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the protesters are said to have gathered to address service delivery issues in the area, online the protest and its fallout were driven by hashtags like #OperationDudula and #PutSouthAfricansFirst. </span><b>DM</b>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centre for Analytics and Behavioural Change (CABC) is a non-profit organisation established to track and counter misinformation and disinformation, fake news and divisive and polarising rhetoric that is promulgated online to undermine social cohesion, democratic integrity, and the stability of nation-states. </span></i>",
