With Matthew Warchus once again directing, and the same original music by hilarious musical genius comedian Tim Minchin, the songs are sharp and brilliantly executed, albeit slightly over-theatrical. A train accident that casts chemical waste over his town acts as a catalyst to answering the mysteries of love, death and the uncertainty of our world. </span>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>***</b></p>\r\n\r\n<h4><b>Showmax</b></h4>\r\n<a href=\"https://youtu.be/q03zOoH-hGo\"><b>The Wolf of Snow Hollow</b></a><b>: 1 December</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A horror comedy about a small mountain town slowly losing it as each month mangled bodies are discovered after the full moon. Overworked, raising a teenage daughter and worried about his ailing father, officer Marshal refuses to accept the insane notion of werewolves despite the growing evidence. The ideas you might have about werewolf movies hold little relevance to this thematically sharp film that is an allegory for toxic masculinity. It’s strong enough metaphorically to not have to pander for laughs or jump-scares, they’re just there as an added bonus. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://youtu.be/j03Q3oyv5KU\"><b>Planet Sex with Cara Delevingne</b></a><b>: 2 December</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British model and actress Cara Delevingne travels the world exploring sexuality and gender to better understand how both genetics and cultural behaviours shape these boundless amorphous forces that play such central roles in human life. During the six-episode series, Delevingne takes a masturbation masterclass; visits an “ethical” porn set; makes art using her vagina; donates her orgasm to science; hits up a women-only sex club and more. With the help of sex scientists and people who experience gender differently, everywhere from Beirut to Barcelona to Johannesburg, the series aims to answer big questions about sex. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://youtu.be/7erHaZoMZuc\"><b>TikTok, Boom</b></a><b>: 8 December </b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TikTok was initially viewed with a certain frivolity compared to other notable social media platforms, but with more than two billion downloads it is the most downloaded app of all time and its impact cannot be ignored. This documentary examines the socio-political, economic, and cultural effects of this China-based tech giant, featuring influencers like Spencer X, Feroza Aziz, and Deja Foxx. As well as examining its “mysterious” algorithms, the film posits how an online platform built around instant gratification and swarm psychology forecasts escalating manipulation and dishonesty from both content creators and the platform itself.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://youtu.be/fCtdIC666Ec\"><b>Blindspotting</b></a><b>: 14 December</b>\r\n\r\nhttps://youtu.be/fCtdIC666Ec\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A spin-off sequel series of the critically acclaimed 2018 comedy-drama of the same name (also on </span><a href=\"https://www.showmax.com/eng/movie/hqg4t0li-blindspotting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Showmax</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) about gentrification in Oakland and how one person’s imprisonment ripples through a community. The series follows Ashley’s existential crisis, brought on by the incarceration of her partner of 12 years. The arrest forces Ashley and their son to move in with her mother and half-sister, as well as many other changes. Daveed Diggs matches the sincerity and humorous social commentary of his original film, and the series has already been renewed for a second season.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://youtu.be/qTtxoz3OIlU\"><b>Respect</b></a><b>: 22 December</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South African Liesl Tommy (</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mrs Fletcher</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Walking Dead</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jessica Jones</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) directs this biopic about Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul. The film adheres a little too devotedly to the biographical music film formula, so Franklin’s heart-breaking and triumphant story suffers in brief moments of cliché, but fittingly, Oscar-winning lead actor Jennifer Hudson (who was recommended by Franklin herself after she saw </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dreamgirls</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) demands respect for her immersive performance and a voice that could match the intensity of her beloved subject.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://youtu.be/fQeZzJ9kR60\"><b>Rassie</b></a><b>: 23 December</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Produced by the makers of </span><a href=\"https://www.showmax.com/eng/tvseries/7lnfa1zu-chasing-the-sun\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chasing the Sun</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://www.showmax.com/eng/tvseries/l9baatc4-two-sides\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two Sides</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (both also streaming on Showmax) this documentary traces the journey of fan-favourite Rassie Erasmus to becoming SA Rugby’s director of rugby. The film hits at a time when he could certainly use some good press, having been </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-12-01-rassie-erasmus-explanation-for-use-of-social-media-does-not-exonerate-him-from-content-responsibility/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in trouble</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for about a year now because of his reckless tweeting of refereeing inconsistencies that resulted in negative outcomes for the Springboks, for which he was recently </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-11-17-world-rugby-bans-bok-supremo-rassie-erasmus-again-after-ref-criticisms/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">banned from touchline and media engagements</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for two matches.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://youtu.be/Ouq-Bjaiz3M\"><b>Together Together</b></a><b>: 26 December</b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An unexpectedly profound comedy about a young woman (Patti Harrison from </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shrill</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) who becomes the surrogate for a dorky single man in his 40s (Ed Helms from </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hangover</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Office</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Despite a premise that seems derivative or predictable, the film defies expectations, and while it doesn’t give all the answers, it asks insightful questions you may otherwise not have thought to ask. </span>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://youtu.be/_Gr2zXuEBL0\"><b>Kimi</b></a><b>: 29 December</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dark techno-thriller directed by Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh about the insidious creeping of convenient technologies into our lives. Zoë Kravitz plays an agoraphobic Seattle tech worker who overhears evidence of a crime due to its unintentional recording on a home smart device. Think </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-05-14-this-weekend-were-watching-woman-in-the-window/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Woman in the Window</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but edgier and glammed up a little. Inspired by a real legal case in which an Amazon Echo smart speaker provided incriminating evidence of a double murder case in the US, the film is not as far-fetched as it may seem. It’s also one of the rare films made during the pandemic which incorporates the coronavirus into its world.</span>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>***</b></p>\r\n<b>Apple TV</b>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://youtu.be/wafyhTpWpUs\"><b>Emancipation</b></a><b>: 9 December</b>\r\n\r\nhttps://youtu.be/wafyhTpWpUs\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the Civil War, a photograph taken in 1863 was </span><a href=\"https://www.history.com/news/whipped-peter-slavery-photo-scourged-back-real-story-civil-war\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">widely circulated by abolitionists</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as brutal proof of the cruelty of slavery. It was a portrait of Gordon “Whipped Peter”, a former slave, sitting with his lacerated back to the camera.
