"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were hardly any surprises as the Proteas Women squad for the T20 World Cup was announced at Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) headquarters in Johannesburg on Tuesday.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proteas star batter Laura Wolvaardt will captain the team in a World Cup for the first time. The tournament begins on 3 October. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She will be supported by experienced players such as all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, bowler Ayabonga Khaka, former skipper Suné Luus and Chloé Tryon.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regulars such as Tazmin Brits, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Tumi Sekhukhune and Nadine de Klerk, who is expected to recover from her Achilles injury, have been included. Miané Smit has been added as a travelling reserver in case someone has to pull out. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interim head coach Dillon du Preez has been trusted with steering the team’s World Cup ambitions as CSA continues its search for a permanent replacement for Hilton Moreeng. (Photo: Abhishek Chinnappa / Getty Images)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Winds of change</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The South Africans suffered heartbreak on home soil in 2023 when they became the first senior South African senior cricket side to reach a World Cup final, only to be vanquished by Australia, who have won six of the tournament’s eight editions. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since that defeat in Cape Town, much has changed. Long-time head coach Moreeng has departed. After more than a decade in charge, during which he took the team from a group of players who were just passionate about cricket, to one of the best cricket teams in the world. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Proteas have also lost their best bowler – Shabnim Ismail – to retirement. Experienced players such as Mignon du Preez, Lizelle Lee and wicketkeeper Trisha Chetty have also left. Of course, this has opened doors for some newcomers.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ayanda Hlubi is one such newcomer. The 20-year-old debuted for the Proteas in a T20 series against Bangladesh back in November 2023. She was player of the match during her first international game and has shone since. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Ayanda is very exciting. We had her on the tour in Australia. She’s got good attributes as a quick bowler,” CSA Proteas Women convenor of selectors, Clinton du Preez said during the squad announcement. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We’ve followed her provincially, she’s an exciting bowler. She’s a player who’s not known by a few countries.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uncapped Hollywoodbets Dolphins leg-spinner Seshnie Naidu has earned her first national team call-up after impressive performances for the SA U/19 Women and the SA Emerging side over the past two years. The Proteas lost to Australia, with the consolation being the fact that they earned their first win against the formidable Aussies during that 2-1 series loss at the beginning of 2024. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also lost by the same scoreline against Sri Lanka on home soil in April. That is how we measure ourselves at the moment,” Du Preez said. “Yes, we’ve gone through a bad patch, but we’re turning the tide. We’ve consulted with the players and we’ve spoken about game plans. So, we’re excited to see what this team will offer. But we’re definitely playing to win.” </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now they will face a Pakistan outfit that swept them 3-0 during a T20 series in September 2023 – although the South Africans did avenge that whitewash by clinching the one-day international series 2-1 on that tour.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon the conclusion of that series in Pakistan, the Proteas will head off to the UAE, where they will amplify their preparations for the World Cup where they will be hoping to go a step further than the second place they achieved at the previous global spectacle. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Proteas begin their campaign with a tough clash against a solid West Indies side. Next is an even tougher test against England, who are ranked second behind Australia in the world.
