"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#PutSouthAfricaFirst was once spearheaded by @uLerato_Pillay, who was unmasked by the </span><a href=\"https://medium.com/dfrlab/afrophobic-south-african-twitter-account-connected-to-nationalist-political-party-7e7205cc8987\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DFRLab</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in July 2020 as Sfiso Gwala, a dismissed member of the South African National Defence Force.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The messages shared by “#PutSouthAfricaFirst”, which has morphed into #PutSouthAfricansFirst and inspired others such as #WeWantOurCountryBack and #ForeignersMustGo have indicated attempts to sow antagonism between South African citizens and foreign nationals – and to divide South Africans into opposing camps.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analysis of these hashtags over an 18-month period reveals how they were used to seed weeds of social discord among the blooms of democracy, especially in the midst of the election process. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1182433 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Screenshot-2022-02-20-at-16.25.40.png\" alt=\"xenophobia twitter\" width=\"720\" height=\"305\" /> Evolution of the top four hashtags within the ‘#PutSouthAfricaFirst’ conversation between 21 August 2020 and 31 January 2022.</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-08-18-ulerato_pillay-how-the-xenophobic-network-around-putsouthafricafirst-was-born-and-then-metastasised/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">August 2020</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Centre for Analytics and Behavioural Change found that the @uLerato_Pillay account had deployed online disinformation tactics and had infiltrated socially divisive content into more than 50,000 Twitter accounts. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CABC’s analysis of the #PutSouthAfricaFirst conversation between August 2020 and February 2022 indicates that elements of disinformation associated with the hashtag continue.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a recent post that purports to show the degradation of a building in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, uses deceptive images of a building in Venezuela: </span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Hillbrow before and after illegal immigrants <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/PutSouthAfricaFirst?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PutSouthAfricaFirst</a> <a href=\"https://t.co/XEMwytRJbW\">pic.twitter.com/XEMwytRJbW</a></p>\r\n— Danilo ?? (@sushifired) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/sushifired/status/1485582034252996612?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 24, 2022</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another recent example of misinformation posing as regulation uses a hashtag with similar connotations to turn sentiment against foreign nationals:</span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/ForeignersMustleaveSA?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ForeignersMustleaveSA</a> all former model c schools in the CBD's are now reserved for foreigners. Our kids are forced to attend township schools. Is this what we voted for?</p>\r\n— Lucango (@lucangoMbil) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/lucangoMbil/status/1375092445533372418?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 25, 2021</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past two years the #PutSouthAfricaFirst social media conversation, related hashtags and keywords have received more than 2.5 million mentions from more than 250,000 authors. </span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1182434\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Screenshot-2022-02-20-at-16.26.05.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"165\" />\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conversation peaked between September and November 2020 and from November 2021 to February 2022, with a long lull in volume between these peaks:</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1182435 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Screenshot-2022-02-20-at-16.26.16.png\" alt=\"xenophobia twitter\" width=\"720\" height=\"231\" /> The volume of the entire ‘#PutSouthAfricafirst’ conversation between 18 August 2020 and 13 February 2022 (weekly).</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the first 2020 peak, some advocates within the #PutSouthAfricaFirst conversation accused the media of turning a blind eye to crime and immigration, and unfairly labelling the movement as xenophobic.</span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">No amount of intimidation can silence us. Newspapers may conduct their lousy researches about <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/PutSouthAfricansFirst?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PutSouthAfricansFirst</a> oksalayo we want our country back. Unemployed South Africans must dominate the labour market not foreigners! <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/SAMediaMustFall?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SAMediaMustFall</a></p>\r\n— Lucango (@lucangoMbil) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/lucangoMbil/status/1297766408030478342?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 24, 2020</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second peak in 2020 centred on allegations of increased human trafficking – prompting police to warn the public against </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/stop-sharing-fake-news-about-human-trafficking-and-kidnapping-cops-urge-20200924\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sharing fake news about human trafficking</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After nearly 11 months of decreased mentions within the #PutSouthAfricaFirst narrative, conversation began to peak towards the first week of November 2021, coinciding with the local government elections.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Twitter users also expressed support for ActionSA for its stance against illegal foreign nationals during this period. </span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">It’s crazy to call Herman Mashaba xenophobic, so South Africans aren’t allowed to express how they feel about illegal immigrants, whereas no where in the world you’ll find South Africans taking over cities and towns like it’s done here.</p>\r\n— Tomi Rikhotso (@TomiRikhotso) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/TomiRikhotso/status/1455404586836058113?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 2, 2021</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By mid-November 2021, another peak emerged with the circulation of online posters encouraging South Africans to join a</span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#NoToZimWorkpermits march to the Union Buildings on 24 November. </span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">No Surrender, No Retreat\r\nCount Down to Pretoria 24.11.2021 <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/PutSouthAficansFirst?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PutSouthAficansFirst</a> <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/NoToZimWorkPermits?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NoToZimWorkPermits</a> <a href=\"https://t.co/BnGFOwRjdg\">pic.twitter.com/BnGFOwRjdg</a></p>\r\n— Kwena Molekwa?? "description": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#PutSouthAfricaFirst was once spearheaded by @uLerato_Pillay, who was unmasked by the </span><a href=\"https://medium.com/dfrlab/afrophobic-south-african-twitter-account-connected-to-nationalist-political-party-7e7205cc8987\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DFRLab</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in July 2020 as Sfiso Gwala, a dismissed member of the South African National Defence Force.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The messages shared by “#PutSouthAfricaFirst”, which has morphed into #PutSouthAfricansFirst and inspired others such as #WeWantOurCountryBack and #ForeignersMustGo have indicated attempts to sow antagonism between South African citizens and foreign nationals – and to divide South Africans into opposing camps.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analysis of these hashtags over an 18-month period reveals how they were used to seed weeds of social discord among the blooms of democracy, especially in the midst of the election process. </span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1182433\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"wp-image-1182433 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Screenshot-2022-02-20-at-16.25.40.png\" alt=\"xenophobia twitter\" width=\"720\" height=\"305\" /> Evolution of the top four hashtags within the ‘#PutSouthAfricaFirst’ conversation between 21 August 2020 and 31 January 2022.[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-08-18-ulerato_pillay-how-the-xenophobic-network-around-putsouthafricafirst-was-born-and-then-metastasised/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">August 2020</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Centre for Analytics and Behavioural Change found that the @uLerato_Pillay account had deployed online disinformation tactics and had infiltrated socially divisive content into more than 50,000 Twitter accounts. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CABC’s analysis of the #PutSouthAfricaFirst conversation between August 2020 and February 2022 indicates that elements of disinformation associated with the hashtag continue.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a recent post that purports to show the degradation of a building in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, uses deceptive images of a building in Venezuela: </span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Hillbrow before and after illegal immigrants <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/PutSouthAfricaFirst?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PutSouthAfricaFirst</a> <a href=\"https://t.co/XEMwytRJbW\">pic.twitter.com/XEMwytRJbW</a></p>\r\n— Danilo ?? Our kids are forced to attend township schools. Newspapers may conduct their lousy researches about <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/PutSouthAfricansFirst?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PutSouthAfricansFirst</a> oksalayo we want our country back.
