"contents": "\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">\"Low-density, car-oriented development -- known as 'sprawl' -- has been the predominant urban form for cities in the past century,\" said Michael Marks, a researcher at the non-profit, New York-based Institute </span><g class=\"gr_ gr_44 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace\" id=\"44\" data-gr-id=\"44\">of</g><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\"> Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), and lead author of the study.</span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">\"The results have been disastrous for both people and the planet.\"</span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">In a sampling of 13 cities in wealthy nations, more than two-thirds of residents, on average, had easy access to rapid transportation, according to the report.</span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">The figure ranged from 100 percent in </span><g class=\"gr_ gr_43 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"43\" data-gr-id=\"43\">Paris,</g><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\"> to 24 percent in Los Angeles.</span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">But moving into the urban sprawl spilling outside city limits, the percentage of residents within easy walking distance -- one kilometre, or three-fifths of a mile -- of a fast train, bus or metro line dropped, on average, by nearly half.</span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">In the greater Paris suburbs, only 50 percent of people were within the range, equivalent to a 10-to-15 minute walk. In greater Los Angeles: 11 percent.</span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">For 13 burgeoning cities in the developing world, only 40 percent of residents were, on average, within a kilometre of public transport. And for urbanites beyond the often invisible city border, the percentage fell to a quarter. </span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Among wealthy cities, those in the United States scored among the lowest, with the exception of New York.</span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">After Paris, Barcelona and Madrid topped the list, with above 90 percent of residents having easy access. </span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Both cities outperformed the French capital when it came to rapid transit in the greater metro areas, with a rate of 75 percent.</span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">A key conclusion to emerge from the report was the link between urban density and broad access to rapid transportation.</span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">\"Urban expansion is occurring faster than transit investment,\" Marks said. </span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">This can \"undermine sustainable and equitable growth,\" he added.</span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Cities -- home to more than half of humanity -- account for nearly </span><g class=\"gr_ gr_45 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"45\" data-gr-id=\"45\">three quarters</g><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\"> of all heat-trapping greenhouse gases.</span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">The transportation sector is responsible for 15 percent, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.</span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">By 2050, two-thirds of Earth's residents will live and work in an urban setting -- an additional 2.5 billion people compared to today, the UN has forecast.</span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Some 90 percent of these new urbanites will be in Africa and Asia.</span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">\"As cities grow quickly in size and wealth, the commuting patterns that their residents develop today will define them for decades to come,\" said Marks.</span></p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">The study was released ahead of </span><g class=\"gr_ gr_41 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"41\" data-gr-id=\"41\">UN Habitat</g><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\"> III conference on housing and sustainable development in Quito, Ecuador starting on October 17.</span></p>\r\n<p><g class=\"gr_ gr_42 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"42\" data-gr-id=\"42\">mh</g><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">/kb</span></p>\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">© 1994-2016 Agence France-Presse</span></p>",
