"description": "Daily Maverick is an independent online news publication and weekly print newspaper in South Africa.\r\n\r\nIt is known for breaking some of the defining stories of South Africa in the past decade, including the Marikana Massacre, in which the South African Police Service killed 34 miners in August 2012.\r\n\r\nIt also investigated the Gupta Leaks, which won the 2019 Global Shining Light Award.\r\n\r\nThat investigation was credited with exposing the Indian-born Gupta family and former President Jacob Zuma for their role in the systemic political corruption referred to as state capture.\r\n\r\nIn 2018, co-founder and editor-in-chief Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic was awarded the country’s prestigious Nat Nakasa Award, recognised for initiating the investigative collaboration after receiving the hard drive that included the email tranche.\r\n\r\nIn 2021, co-founder and CEO Styli Charalambous also received the award.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick covers the latest political and news developments in South Africa with breaking news updates, analysis, opinions and more.",

Donations can be dropped off at 155 2nd Avenue, Kenilworth. Doors will remain open until 9pm during the next four nights.\r\n\r\n“As a charity organisation, the extent to which we can make a difference depends on donations and sponsorships from the public. We are therefore asking the community to respond generously to this emergency appeal,” said Govender.\r\n\r\nThe organisation told Daily Maverick on Tuesday that 105 spaces had so far been occupied, with another 30 spaces to be added in response to the storms.\r\n\r\nPower cuts\r\n\r\nEskom has said that around 13,000 people are without power after the cold fronts caused multiple faults across the Western Cape. Affected areas include:\r\n
\r\n \t
Breerivier and Op-die-Berg (Ceres).
\r\n \t
Perdeberg/Gouda and surrounding farms.
\r\n \t
Houw Hoek, Grabouw and surrounding farms.
\r\n \t
Mandela Park (Khayelitsha), including Khayelitsha Hospital.
\r\n \t
Rawsonville and surrounding farms.
\r\n \t
Struisbaai.
\r\n \t
Tulbagh and surrounding farms.
\r\n
\r\nEskom said technicians had been dispatched to attend to the faults, but that road closures in some areas affected by flooding were restricting access. DM\r\n\r\nTo assist with the relief efforts, donations can be delivered to City of Cape Town drop-off points at the Goodwood, Lakeside, Ottery, Roeland Street, Sir Lowry’s Pass and Strand fire stations.\r\n\r\nDonations to U-Turn Homeless Ministries can be made here and Gift of the Givers here, or call Gift of the Givers on 0800 786 911.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n",
