They received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. Phase 2 vaccinated people over 60 years old and those in congregate settings. The third and final phase, now under way, covers the remaining South African population.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The programme got off to a shaky start in February 2021. It encountered a number of </span><a href=\"https://theconversation.com/south-africas-vaccine-quagmire-and-what-needs-to-be-done-now-163784\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">setbacks</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as supply, logistics and governance issues, but has gained momentum in recent weeks. As many as 200,000 doses are being administered daily. By the end of July 2021, almost </span><a href=\"https://graphics.reuters.com/world-coronavirus-tracker-and-maps/countries-and-territories/south-africa/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.9%</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the South African population had been fully vaccinated and </span><a href=\"https://graphics.reuters.com/world-coronavirus-tracker-and-maps/countries-and-territories/south-africa/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7.5%</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had their first of the two Pfizer doses.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this uptake, many South Africans are </span><a href=\"https://sacoronavirus.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Report_Covid-19-vaccine-hesitancy_SA-studies_1April2021.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still hesitant</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to take the vaccine. The circulation of misinformation about it poses the danger of hampering efforts to control the pandemic.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we aim to dispel some of the myths surrounding the Covid-19 vaccines.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Myth 1: The Covid-19 vaccine will affect a woman’s fertility</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This myth was sparked when a social media </span><a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/george.denos/videos/10151470477294957?_rdc=1&_rdr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was shared in December 2020 by Dr Wolfgang Wodarg, a physician and former chief scientist for allergy and respiratory therapy at Pfizer, and Dr Michael Yeadon, a pulmonologist. They claimed that the spike protein on the coronavirus was the same as the spike protein that is responsible for the growth and attachment of the placenta during pregnancy. The </span><a href=\"https://www.fertstertdialog.com/posts/fertility-considerations-the-covid-19-disease-may-have-a-more-negative-impact-than-the-covid-19-vaccine-especially-among-men?room_id=871-covid-19\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fear</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was that, as a result of the vaccine, the immune system would not be able to differentiate between the two spike proteins and would attack the placental protein.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is untrue. The overall makeup of the placental protein is </span><a href=\"https://www.fertstertdialog.com/posts/fertility-considerations-the-covid-19-disease-may-have-a-more-negative-impact-than-the-covid-19-vaccine-especially-among-men?room_id=871-covid-19\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very different</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the coronavirus spike protein.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, during the Pfizer vaccine </span><a href=\"https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus/covid-19-vaccines-myth-versus-fact\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tests</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 23 women volunteers became pregnant after taking the vaccine.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, the </span><a href=\"https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/recommendations/pregnancy.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benefits</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of being vaccinated outweigh the risks of infection for pregnant women.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Myth 2: I’ve had Covid-19, so I don’t need a vaccine</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reinfection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, can occur even in individuals who have previously contracted the virus. But receiving the vaccine can provide protection against severe Covid-19 complications.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The level of protection that is achieved from natural immunity after being infected by the virus is unknown. But scientists </span><a href=\"https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus/covid-19-vaccines-myth-versus-fact\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">believe that</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the vaccine provides better protection than natural infection.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Myth 3: Covid-19 vaccine side-effects are dangerous</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several </span><a href=\"http://www.hsrc.ac.za/en/news/media-and-covid19/a-hesitant-nation-sa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been conducted since the start of the pandemic that have measured South Africans’ perceptions of vaccine issues. A recent </span><a href=\"https://www.uj.ac.za/newandevents/PublishingImages/Pages/UJ-HSRC-survey-shows-that-two-thirds-of-adults-are-willing-to-take-the-Covid-19-vaccine/2021-01-25%20Vaccine%20briefing%20(final).pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the University of Johannesburg and the Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa found that of the respondents who did not want to be vaccinated, 25% were concerned about side-effects.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the side effects of the Covid-19 vaccine are mild. They include low grade fever, sore arm and fatigue, and these usually subside after one to three days.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rare side effects such as blood clots have been </span><a href=\"https://healthcare.utah.edu/healthfeed/postings/2021/07/blood-clotting-covid19.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. The chances of experiencing this side effect are low. The risks of blood clots </span><a href=\"https://www.ahajournals.org/coronavirus/cerebral-venous-thrombosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as a result of Covid-19</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> infection are 8-10 times higher than risks associated with the vaccine. Doctors are aware of this concern and are trained to identify and treat the condition quickly.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent </span><a href=\"https://www.healthline.com/health-news/vaccine-side-effects-vs-covid-19-damage-theres-no-comparison\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article by Healthline</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> – a medically reviewed and fact checked website – compared the benefits and risks of being vaccinated with those of contracting Covid-19. Lung damage is a complication of Covid-19 while muscle fatigue can be a side effect of the vaccine. This risk-benefit decision is left to the individual to make, but vaccinations have been </span><a href=\"https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/safety/safety-of-vaccines.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proven</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be safe.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Myth 4: Vaccines have a microchip that will track and control an individual</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This conspiracy theory has been propagated by anti-vaxxers who believe that the American business magnate, investor and philanthropist Bill Gates will implant microchips to track people’s movement, using the vaccine as the method of delivery. This is untrue and has been </span><a href=\"https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-factcheck-coronavirus-bill-gates-micr-idUSKBN21I3EC\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clarified</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Gates in the media.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This myth gained traction when a video was shared on Facebook making false claims about the optional microchip on the syringe’s label of the Covid-19 vaccine. This microchip’s purpose is to confirm that the injectable and the vaccine are not counterfeit and haven’t expired. It will also confirm if the injection has been used.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People commenting on the video appeared to have misinterpreted the technology as an injectable. But the microchip is part of the syringe </span><a href=\"https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-factcheck-microchip-not-injected-covi-idUSKBN28O1TM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">label and not the injectable</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> substance itself.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Myth 5: The Covid-19 vaccine development was rushed, so it may not be effective</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vaccine was developed very quickly. This was possible because the vaccine technology had been in development for </span><a href=\"https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus/covid-19-vaccines-myth-versus-fact\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many years</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When the genetic information of SARS-CoV-2 was identified, the process could begin quickly. There were sufficient </span><a href=\"https://www.mydr.com.au/covid-19/was-the-covid-19-vaccine-rushed-dr-norman-swan/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resources</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to fund the research and social media made it easier to recruit participants for the clinical trials. Because SARS-CoV-2 is contagious, it was easy to tell whether the vaccine </span><a href=\"https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus/covid-19-vaccines-myth-versus-fact\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worked or not</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Myth 6: The Covid-19 vaccine can alter my DNA</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The messenger RNA vaccine (Pfizer) and the viral vector vaccine (Johnson and Johnson) cause your body to develop protection, so that when you are infected by SARS-CoV-2, your body is prepared to fight the virus. DNA is located in the nucleus of your cells and the vaccine material does not enter the nucleus. So it </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/health24/getting-to-know-vaccines/covid-19-vaccine-myths-debunked-get-the-facts-here-20210708\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not alter</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the DNA.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media plays a huge role in propagating myths and conspiracy theories.
