This resource guide provides some direction in navigating which civil society organisations are providing support and which websites and hotlines are giving reliable and relevant information on rights during the lockdown. In addition, it lists where to find help and information about health, education material, statistics and grants or relief —and how to report abuses of power.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Useful websites and hotlines for information and reporting on injustice</b>\r\n\r\n<b>Knowing, and protecting, rights under the State of Disaster and lockdown</b>\r\n\r\n<b>Access to the latest regulations: </b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest lockdown regulations, directions and disaster management guidelines, as well as the Disaster Management Act, can all be found on one page</span><a href=\"https://sacoronavirus.co.za/guidelines-and-relief/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Understanding rights during a lockdown:</b> <a href=\"https://www.lhr.org.za/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lawyers for Human Rights</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has created</span><a href=\"https://www.lhr.org.za/cases-reports/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> guides on rights during lockdown</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with some focused on explaining the rights of specific groups such as essential workers and children.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>The pandemic, technology and rights:</b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Tshisimani Centre for Activist Education has published an</span><a href=\"http://tshisimani.org.za/materials/technology-and-the-fight-against-coronavirus-friend-or-enemy/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> illustrated guide</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to better explain the interplay of rights, technology and the response to the Covid-19 pandemic.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Reporting the abuse of rights:</b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The</span><a href=\"https://www.sahrc.org.za/index.php/sahrc-media/news-2/item/2298-media-statement-sahrc-continues-to-monitor-human-rights-observance-and-calls-for-calm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> South African Human Rights Commission</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continues to monitor human rights abuses during the pandemic and can be contacted for the lodging of a complaint, for yourself or on behalf of others, against any security forces for misconduct.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-740753\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/MC-Christi-Resource-Guide-Xenowatch-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1414\" /></span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A poster explaining how to report incidents of xenophobia in South Africa during the Covid-19 pandemic. This is not an exhaustive list.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Community Action Networks (CANs)</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These networks have sprung up in </span><a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/groups/CapeTownTogether/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western Cape</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,</span><a href=\"https://www.gautengtogether.org\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gauteng</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Eastern Cape since the start of lockdown. The aim is to connect people in a neighbourhood to one another so that they can draw on the strengths and energy of others nearby. Cape Town Together has created a page dedicated to helpful</span><a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/groups/CapeTownTogether/learning_content/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAN resources</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.gautengtogether.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sign up or start your own CAN</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Gauteng.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>C-19 Coalition</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The</span><a href=\"https://c19peoplescoalition.org.za\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C-19 Coalition</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a collection of nearly 300 trade unions, civic organisations, faith-based organisations, community structures and organisations of informal workers. The coalition’s mission is to advocate for the rights and well-being of the most vulnerable in our unequal society, and to make sure safety measures are shared equitably.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any organisation that subscribes to its founding statement and principles can join one of the nearly 20 working groups, and anyone can join the online People’s Assemblies. At these sessions, activist working groups present and debate policy briefs and proposals. The website has a wealth of information about how to organise for action during the pandemic.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>CovidCommsSA</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communications professionals can join the</span><a href=\"https://covidcomms.org.za\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">network</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a communications volunteer —</span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to link up with the government and others in creating and distributing accurate, reliable information about Covid-19 in South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Support for survivors of gender-based violence</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government has set up hotlines for people who are targets of gender-based violence during the lockdown. The GBV command centre can be called on 0800 428 428 or contacted via Skype (HELPMEGBV). The toll-free number is *120*7867#.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://rapecrisis.org.za/programmes/road-to-justice/thuthuzela-care-centres/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thuthuzela Care Centres</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have remained open during lockdown. These centres are based in 54 hospitals across South Africa to provide forensic and medical services to rape survivors as an emergency service in the 72 hours immediately after the rape.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-740750\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/MC-Christi-Resource-Guide-Thuthuzela-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" /></span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All Thuthuzela Care Centres remain open during South Africa’s lockdown to provide essential services such as medical care, trauma counselling and support to rape survivors. This number can also be used to report bad driving and unsafe vehicles.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>SANDF:</b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To report a soldier’s misconduct, file a complaint at your nearest police station or contact the military ombudsman. These are the nationwide numbers: 076 609 2255, 012 676 3818, 081 512. 4792, 086 431 773</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Lawyers for Human Rights writes:</b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> “Collins Khosa died after an altercation with the SANDF and the JMPD during the lockdown. The Khosa judgment, which was handed down on 15 May, clarifies that law enforcement have to act within the bounds of the law even in a state of disaster and that they should be held accountable for their actions. If you suspect a company is doing this, report them by calling 0800 141.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Education material for schoolchildren</b>\r\n\r\n<b>Learning from home:</b><a href=\"http://section27.org.za/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Section 27</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has created an “</span><a href=\"http://section27.org.za/learning-during-the-covid-19-lockdown-online-broadcast-and-radio-educational-resource-map/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">educational resource map</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">” for learning during lockdown.
