Over the past few years Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has firmly cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players of his generation. During the past season he added further gloss to his story.

Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams recently added another impressive page to the story of his career as a soccer player. He walked away with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) player of the season award following a stellar individual campaign for both club and country.

By bagging the prestigious award at the season-ending virtual awards ceremony on Sunday, 23 June, Williams became just the third goalkeeper in the PSL’s 28-year history to win it.

He joined former Bafana Bafana and Santos glovesman Andre Arendse, as well as Kaizer Chiefs juggernaut Itumeleng Khune – who revolutionised the art of goalkeeping in South Africa during his prime and was the last goalkeeper to claim the award just over a decade ago.

Generally, the top PSL award has been dominated by attackers and midfielders, which is the case with most individual awards in global soccer. That Williams managed to be one of the players to disrupt this trend – holding off competition from Sundowns teammate Teboho Mokoena and Stellenbosch striker Iqraam Rayners – is evidence enough that he had an outstanding season.

Sundowns won their seventh DStv Premiership title in a row, with Williams winning his second since joining the Tshwane heavyweights in 2022. The Brazilians also reached three finals this season, a journey on which Williams was again pivotal. They lost both the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup finals to Orlando Pirates.

However, Sundowns did win the inaugural African Football League, and Williams was instrumental there as well. Overall, during his sophomore season as a Brazilian, the 32-year-old shot stopper played 46 matches. He conceded just 19 goals and kept 30 clean sheets.

As if his club exploits weren’t enough to highlight his individual brilliance and consistency over the past 12 months, Williams was also one of the key ingredients to Bafana Bafana delivering a memorable Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) performance at the beginning of 2024.

This includes four spot kick saves during South Africa’s Afcon 2-1 win on penalties in their quarterfinal clash against Cape Verde.

In total Williams managed five clean sheets in seven games as he captained Bafana Bafana to their first major tournament medal since finishing third at the 2000 Afcon. He earned the Afcon goalkeeper of the tournament prize as a result.

Selfless leader

Former Bafana Bafana boss Gordon Igesund, who also worked with Williams for two years at club level when the pair were at SuperSport United, told Daily Maverick during Afcon that the Gqeberha-born goalie is a “magnificent character”.

“He is a good person. [When I coached him] he was a good youngster that worked very hard. Someone who would die out there for the team and his teammates, while still being very humble and keeping his feet on the ground. I’m just so proud of him,” Igesund said.

Before officially being awarded the player of the season gong a few days ago, Williams had displayed his class and leadership qualities as he suggested to Bafana Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos that they hand Pirates youngster Relebohile Mofokeng his international debut as reward for a stellar season.

Bafana Bafana were comfortably in the lead against Zimbabwe in their World Cup qualifying match when Williams nudged Broos. Having heavily trusted the goalkeeper since his appointment as Bafana coach back in 2021, Broos obliged.

“Ronwen came and said, ‘coach, what do you think, for the last minutes maybe Rele?’ I said ‘ok, good idea’. Therefore, Rele came on,” Broos said after the match. “That shows again how the atmosphere is in this group.”

Teenager Mofokeng, who walked away with the young player of the season accolade at the recent PSL awards ceremony, could not contain his elation when he came on at the Free State Stadium two weeks ago. This was despite only being on the pitch for a few seconds.

“Ronwen [also] did it a year ago or something with [his fellow goalkeeper Veli Mothwa]. He came out five minutes before the end and Veli came in in the end,” Broos added.

The story continues

The 32-year-old has also been rewarded by his parent club for his outstanding contributions since his arrival at Sundowns from his boyhood team, SuperSport. The Brazilians announced that Williams had earned a four-year contract extension which will ensure he stays with them until 2028.

“I’m over the moon. It just shows the belief that the club has in me, it shows the value that I’ve brought to the club. There is so much that we can achieve as a team and I’m looking forward to it with lots of excitement,” said Williams about his stay at Chloorkop being extended.

One of those achievements is undoubtedly a Caf Champions League title, a trophy that has remained elusive for Sundowns since they won it for the first time in 2016, under the tutelage of Pitso Mosimane.

Williams and Sundowns will also be part of the rejigged Fifa Club World Cup next year in the US. Another amazing chapter that will be added to his glittering career. With Bafana, the dream is to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. DM
