"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food rescue organisation SA Harvest launched its new branch in the Garden Route in November. Headed by Regional Manager Carl van Blerk, the branch is set to deliver 100,000 meals a month across seven municipalities and is expected to scale up to 150,000 meals within the first 12 months. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new branch is an addition to SA Harvest’s daily distribution of more than 15,000 meals. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Van Blerk says although the branch has been recently branded as part of </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-06-02-war-on-waste-more-needs-to-be-done-to-feed-south-africas-needy-says-sa-harvest/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SA Harvest</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it was born about a year ago in collaboration with local municipalities and stakeholders. It was formerly known as the Garden Route Food Pantry. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1113992\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Banda-Harvest-Garden_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"440\" /> Carl van Blerk sets out the latest food donations to SA Harvest Garden Route. (Photo: SA Harvest)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The Garden Route is part of the Western Cape’s poorest regions, [and] especially in some of the inland districts the need for food is dire. Realising the growing need for food during the first lap of Covid-19 I put together a proposal to open a food bank. I approached municipalities for help, because one of the reasons we have not done it in the past is because of the lack of funding.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I had a good conversation with the local municipalities and with the mayor of the Garden Route District Municipality, who [said] they were also looking at the possibility of a food bank. A very long story short, we [made] proposals to all the players. The Garden Route Food Pantry was launched last year in December. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Since then the pantry has had 200 beneficiaries from across seven municipalities who have in turn catered for approximately 25,000 people.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1113993\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Banda-Harvest-Garden_2.jpg\" alt=\"sa harvest garden route\" width=\"720\" height=\"436\" /> Tillie Nel and Randall Scott prepare the food delivery list for the day. (Photo: SA Harvest)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Throughout the pantry’s existence, our primary difficulty has been sourcing food, merely because Garden Route doesn’t have a big food production industry or major factories. It has very few large farms that we could approach for sourcing food. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I then approached SA Harvest. They saw the benefit of actually including the SA Harvest branch in Garden Route and helping us to be able to source foods from around the country that we can bring to this region as well. That’s how we got to here. We also had a bulk of maize meal coming from Italy that was brought to the branch.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“This has proven to be a successful and beneficial merge to ease poverty and hunger in the Garden Route region.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Henrico Kumutu of Eden Meals on Wheels, a beneficiary non-profit organisation based in Oudtshoorn, told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maverick Citizen</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the impact of the SA Harvest Garden Route is already being felt.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1113996\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Banda-Harvest-Garden_5.jpg\" alt=\"sa harvest garden route\" width=\"720\" height=\"423\" /> Warren Mandondo receives fortified porridge stock, a donation from Outside the Bowl. We have noticed several positive responses from the children and the new energy that is visible amongst the beneficiaries. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Also, in </span><a href=\"http://dysselsdorp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dysselsdorp</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a community that experiences high levels of chronic poverty, there is visible change as we continue to also distribute breakfast there as well daily. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1113998 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Banda-Harvest-Garden_7.jpg\" alt=\"sa harvest garden route\" width=\"720\" height=\"424\" /> Randall Scott prepares soup for hungry communities.
