"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Players in the new season of South Africa’s top-tier soccer league are getting ready to astound. Some will be seeking to strengthen their reputations, while others will be out to establish or re-establish themselves. (Photo: Lefty Shivambu / Gallo Images)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Thabiso Sesane – Orlando Pirates</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Buccaneers are not short of quality in defence, boasting the likes of Tapelo Xoki and Nkosinathi Sibisi, centre backs who would start at most Premiership teams.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But towards the end of last season and early in the 2024/25 campaign, it has been Pirates’ academy graduate, Thabiso Sesane, who seems likely to occupy the starting berth, alongside Nigerian Olisa Ndah.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sesane made his Bucs debut at the end of 2020, before loan spells at Jomo Cosmos and All Stars in the lower tiers of local soccer. Now 24 years old, the defender appears primed to take his game to the next level.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having already drawn comparisons to former Bafana Bafana skipper Mbulelo Mabizela, Sesane could soon find himself in the national team.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2364460\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/TL_2254492-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"SA Premiership\" width=\"1705\" height=\"2560\" /> <em>Kobamelo Kodisang of Mamelodi Sundowns during the MTN8 semifinal, second-leg match against Stellenbosch FC at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on 1 September 2024. (Photo: Darren Stewart / Gallo Images)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Kobamelo Kodisang – Mamelodi Sundowns</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sundowns fended off competition from European clubs to secure the services of the 24-year-old attacker.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last season he was with Portuguese Primeira Liga outfit Moreirense. He played in 31 of 34 league games and managed one goal plus three assists to help them to finish sixth in the league.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now the former Bidvest Wits winger is back home after six years in Europe and will be hoping to command a regular starting spot in a star-studded Sundowns side.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Technically, [Kobemelo Kodisang is] a very good player, a very big dribbler, a very balanced boy, who can also score goals,” Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi said.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Rushwin Dortley – Kaizer Chiefs</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike fellow centre back Sesane, Rushwin Dortley is already part of the national team. Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos not only called up the 1.9m-tall defender for the recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, but also started him in both matches.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite his minimal experience at international level, Dortley had a decent outing alongside former Chiefs defender Siyabonga Ngezana. Broos’s trust in him is likely to boost Dortley’s confidence as the new Amakhosi recruit looks to be part of the group of players that will revive the struggling Soweto side.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 22-year-old caught the eye of Chiefs after some solid displays for Cape Town Spurs last season, where he made 26 league appearances, before they were relegated.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2364459\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/TL_2248765.jpg\" alt=\"SA Premiership\" width=\"1280\" height=\"856\" /> <em>Lehlohonolo Mojela of Stellenbosch FC in action during a CAF Confederations Cup match against Nsingizini Hotspurs in Durban on 17 August 2024. (Photo: Darren Stewart / Gallo Images)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Lehlohonolo Mojela – Stellenbosch</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After an exciting maiden season in the top flight with TS Galaxy, where he scored seven times in all competitions and was a joy to watch in general, Lehlohonolo Mojela moved to Stellenbosch.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 27-year-old forward’s rise up the South African soccer ranks has been rapid. The Cape Winelands club will be Mojela’s fifth in as many years. After making his name in the second tier, he was signed by Galaxy last season.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“He is a dynamic player whom we have been monitoring for some time, and we believe he will be a valuable addition to our squad,” said Stellies CEO Rob Benadie.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2364456\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/TL_2211134-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1853\" height=\"2560\" /> <em>Jaedin Rhodes of Cape Town City in action against Kaizer Chiefs during their DStv Premiership match at Cape Town Stadium on 28 April 2024. (Photo: Ashley Vlotman / Gallo Images)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Jaedin Rhodes – Cape Town City</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being only 21, 2024/25 will be Jaedin Rhodes’s third full season as a professional player and his fourth overall. He was promoted to the senior side midway through the 2021/22 season after some sensational showings in Cape Town City’s youth structure.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now City coach Eric Tinkler ranks the creative midfielder as one of his most trusted soldiers. That’s largely because of his versatility and outstanding football IQ.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last season he missed just one of City’s 30 league games. (Photo: Alche Greeff / Gallo Images)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Puso Dithejane – TS Galaxy</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A product of the School of Excellence, Puso Dithejane was released by Kaizer Chiefs for misconduct in late 2023. The youth player, who was yet to make his senior side bow, had allegedly refused to be a ball boy.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Galaxy quickly snapped up the exciting right-side midfielder and integrated him into their first team. The 20-year-old made 13 appearances in the league for the Rockets last term, scoring a goal and supplying an assist.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his first full season in the Premiership, he will be out to build on the foundation he laid in his debut professional campaign.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Azola Matrose – Chippa United</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The attacking midfielder signed for Pirates in mid-2022 after impressing with Chippa United during his debut season in the Premiership in 2021/22. After signing for the Buccaneers, he was loaned back to Chippa to continue his development.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A long-term injury denied him the chance to wear the Pirates shirt in a competitive match last season.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has rejoined Chippa permanently for the 2024/25 campaign and there is hope that the 21-year-old can rediscover the form that initially caught Pirates’ eye.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2364453\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/TL_2075651-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2368\" height=\"2560\" /> <em>Moroka Swallows’ Keenan Phillips during a DStv Premiership game against Sekhukhune United at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on 16 August 2023. (Photo: Philip Maeta / Gallo Images)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Keenan Phillips – Golden Arrows</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keenan Phillips made his Premiership debut for Wits towards the end of the Covid-disrupted 2019/20 season. The club ceased to exist as a top-flight team at the end of the campaign.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The promising right-back was immediately snagged by SuperSport United, which has mastered the art of handling young talent. He slotted right into the team’s setup in his debut season, playing a healthy number of games.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in the 2022/23 season, Phillips found his playing time significantly reduced, and he was eventually sold to Moroka Swallows.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the demise of Swallows last season, he joined Arrows in Durban. (Photo: Darren Stewart / Gallo Images)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Lucky Muthewi – SuperSport United</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alongside Cape Town City 16-year-old wonderkid Emile Witbooi, Lucky Muthewi is one of the youngest players set to feature in the Premiership this campaign.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 17-year-old product of the Remember Elite Sport academy joined SuperSport in early 2024. The striker impressed enough to earn three appearances from the bench in all competitions before the end of last season.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With SuperSport’s main striker Bradley Grobler out with a long-term injury, Muthewi’s time on the field is likely to increase tenfold this season.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Oswin Appollis – Polokwane City</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fleet-footed winger may not remain in the city of Polokwane for much longer. Last season he impressed for his Limpopo-based team, being directly involved in 12 goals (five assists and seven goals) from 31 matches in all competitions.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has since established himself as a Bafana Bafana regular, and his performances have attracted attention from as far as Algeria. (Photo: Lefty Shivambu / Gallo Images)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Thabiso Sesane – Orlando Pirates</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Buccaneers are not short of quality in defence, boasting the likes of Tapelo Xoki and Nkosinathi Sibisi, centre backs who would start at most Premiership teams.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But towards the end of last season and early in the 2024/25 campaign, it has been Pirates’ academy graduate, Thabiso Sesane, who seems likely to occupy the starting berth, alongside Nigerian Olisa Ndah.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sesane made his Bucs debut at the end of 2020, before loan spells at Jomo Cosmos and All Stars in the lower tiers of local soccer. (Photo: Darren Stewart / Gallo Images)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Kobamelo Kodisang – Mamelodi Sundowns</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sundowns fended off competition from European clubs to secure the services of the 24-year-old attacker.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last season he was with Portuguese Primeira Liga outfit Moreirense. He played in 31 of 34 league games and managed one goal plus three assists to help them to finish sixth in the league.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now the former Bidvest Wits winger is back home after six years in Europe and will be hoping to command a regular starting spot in a star-studded Sundowns side.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Technically, [Kobemelo Kodisang is] a very good player, a very big dribbler, a very balanced boy, who can also score goals,” Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi said.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Rushwin Dortley – Kaizer Chiefs</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike fellow centre back Sesane, Rushwin Dortley is already part of the national team. Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos not only called up the 1.9m-tall defender for the recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, but also started him in both matches.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite his minimal experience at international level, Dortley had a decent outing alongside former Chiefs defender Siyabonga Ngezana. (Photo: Darren Stewart / Gallo Images)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Lehlohonolo Mojela – Stellenbosch</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After an exciting maiden season in the top flight with TS Galaxy, where he scored seven times in all competitions and was a joy to watch in general, Lehlohonolo Mojela moved to Stellenbosch.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 27-year-old forward’s rise up the South African soccer ranks has been rapid. The Cape Winelands club will be Mojela’s fifth in as many years. He was promoted to the senior side midway through the 2021/22 season after some sensational showings in Cape Town City’s youth structure.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now City coach Eric Tinkler ranks the creative midfielder as one of his most trusted soldiers. That’s largely because of his versatility and outstanding football IQ.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last season he missed just one of City’s 30 league games. The youth player, who was yet to make his senior side bow, had allegedly refused to be a ball boy.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Galaxy quickly snapped up the exciting right-side midfielder and integrated him into their first team. The 20-year-old made 13 appearances in the league for the Rockets last term, scoring a goal and supplying an assist.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his first full season in the Premiership, he will be out to build on the foundation he laid in his debut professional campaign.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Azola Matrose – Chippa United</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The attacking midfielder signed for Pirates in mid-2022 after impressing with Chippa United during his debut season in the Premiership in 2021/22. After signing for the Buccaneers, he was loaned back to Chippa to continue his development.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A long-term injury denied him the chance to wear the Pirates shirt in a competitive match last season.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has rejoined Chippa permanently for the 2024/25 campaign and there is hope that the 21-year-old can rediscover the form that initially caught Pirates’ eye.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_2364453\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"2368\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-2364453\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/TL_2075651-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2368\" height=\"2560\" /> <em>Moroka Swallows’ Keenan Phillips during a DStv Premiership game against Sekhukhune United at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on 16 August 2023. (Photo: Philip Maeta / Gallo Images)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Keenan Phillips – Golden Arrows</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keenan Phillips made his Premiership debut for Wits towards the end of the Covid-disrupted 2019/20 season. The club ceased to exist as a top-flight team at the end of the campaign.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The promising right-back was immediately snagged by SuperSport United, which has mastered the art of handling young talent. He slotted right into the team’s setup in his debut season, playing a healthy number of games.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in the 2022/23 season, Phillips found his playing time significantly reduced, and he was eventually sold to Moroka Swallows.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the demise of Swallows last season, he joined Arrows in Durban. (Photo: Darren Stewart / Gallo Images)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Lucky Muthewi – SuperSport United</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alongside Cape Town City 16-year-old wonderkid Emile Witbooi, Lucky Muthewi is one of the youngest players set to feature in the Premiership this campaign.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 17-year-old product of the Remember Elite Sport academy joined SuperSport in early 2024. The striker impressed enough to earn three appearances from the bench in all competitions before the end of last season.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With SuperSport’s main striker Bradley Grobler out with a long-term injury, Muthewi’s time on the field is likely to increase tenfold this season.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Oswin Appollis – Polokwane City</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fleet-footed winger may not remain in the city of Polokwane for much longer. Last season he impressed for his Limpopo-based team, being directly involved in 12 goals (five assists and seven goals) from 31 matches in all competitions.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has since established himself as a Bafana Bafana regular, and his performances have attracted attention from as far as Algeria.
