It monitors the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) to ensure the rail network is safe and has the power to suspend Prasa’s safety permit if it does not comply with safety standards – which it had threatened to do in</span></span></span><span style=\"color: #1155cc;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><u> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2018-10-18-train-woes-safety-is-a-national-concern-railway-regulator-tells-mps/\" target=\"_top\">late 2018.</a></u></span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Poya was appointed CEO in October 2011. He was placed on suspension in November 2017 following claims that he had been conducting unauthorised investigations into the RSR board as well as </span></span></span><a href=\"https://mg.co.za/article/2018-11-16-00-poya-launched-private-probe-into-rail-regulator-board\" target=\"_top\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><u>Mail and Guardian journalist Athandiwe Saba</u></span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">. Other claims against him include dereliction of duty, not adhering to the authority of the RSR board and dishonesty.</span></span></span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">In 2018, he applied to the Labour Court to have his disciplinary hearing declared invalid and to interdict the RSR from proceeding with disciplinary hearings against him.
