"description": "Daily Maverick is an independent online news publication and weekly print newspaper in South Africa.\r\n\r\nIt is known for breaking some of the defining stories of South Africa in the past decade, including the Marikana Massacre, in which the South African Police Service killed 34 miners in August 2012.\r\n\r\nIt also investigated the Gupta Leaks, which won the 2019 Global Shining Light Award.\r\n\r\nThat investigation was credited with exposing the Indian-born Gupta family and former President Jacob Zuma for their role in the systemic political corruption referred to as state capture.\r\n\r\nIn 2018, co-founder and editor-in-chief Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic was awarded the country’s prestigious Nat Nakasa Award, recognised for initiating the investigative collaboration after receiving the hard drive that included the email tranche.\r\n\r\nIn 2021, co-founder and CEO Styli Charalambous also received the award.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick covers the latest political and news developments in South Africa with breaking news updates, analysis, opinions and more.",

"contents": "First, a confession. The South African Villain of the Year, as chosen by Daily Maverick readers, was former University of Cape Town Vice-Chancellor Mamokgethi Phakeng. But considering the competition, it felt necessary to override the democratic process in this instance – because our ultimate category winners, Thabo Bester and Dr Nandipha Magudumana, have murdered and raped, and swindled millions.\r\n\r\nThis Bonnie and Clyde duo had the nation in a chokehold for months this year, drawn in by the sensational allegations of their crimes and the sizzling chemistry that seemed to burn between the two of them, even in the dock.\r\n\r\nBut it’s necessary to remind ourselves that underneath the titillating tabloid spectacle lies an extremely dark story indeed – one that casts various aspects of the South African state in a very dim light.\r\n\r\nBester’s escape from the Mangaung Correctional Centre was only made possible by what looks to have been whole circles of corrupt prison officials at virtually every level of the facility.\r\n\r\nThat Magudumana was able to claim not one but two bodies from state mortuaries without producing any evidence that she was a family member of the deceased is deeply concerning.\r\n\r\nPossibly the most worrying aspect of the whole story, however, is that the Department of Correctional Services showed so little urgency in investigating Bester’s escape, despite having information from fairly early on to suggest that it was not, in fact, Bester who had died in a fire in his cell.\r\n\r\nHad it not been for Judge Edwin Cameron playing whistle-blower – in his capacity as head of the prisons inspectorate – and for dedicated GroundUp journalists Daniel Steyn and Marecia Damons doggedly pursuing the story, Bester and Magudumana might still be on the run.\r\n\r\nEvery time the two have appeared in court this year, there has been a flurry of commentary on social media regarding their appearance, clothes and body language. If you were only judging by the tone of this chatter, you would assume that Bester and Magudumana were accused of only the most trivial crimes.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/bester-villian-winner1/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1984770 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Bester-Villian-winner1-e1703428730638.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"836\" height=\"944\" /></a>\r\n\r\nLest we forget: Bester was in prison for raping women at knifepoint, and in at least one case, brutally murdering a woman who even by his own account had shown him nothing but kindness and support.\r\n\r\nMagudumana is accused of being an active participant in effecting this murderer’s escape from prison, and before this is alleged to have worked with Bester to defraud victims out of millions of rands.\r\n\r\nBester may be a psychopath. What was in it for Magudumana, who was a successful doctor and practice owner in her own right, may never be clear. But as Steyn and Damons noted in their book The Thabo Bester Story: The Facebook Rapist, the Celebrity Doctor and the Escape from Cell 35, the entire saga says something rather depressing about our society.\r\n\r\n“There is a cynical point to be made about how easily [Bester] was able to fleece South Africans,” the two journalists wrote.\r\n\r\n“Whether in the potholed streets of Bloemfontein or the glitzy hotels of Sandton, this story presents a disconcerting picture of who we are: our vapid celebrity culture; our fetishisation of money and bling at the expense of our own integrity; our aspiration towards opulence and decadence; how we treat women; how we glorify ambition, control and power; and how we often turn a blind eye to the institutional rot in the country that ultimately enabled Bester’s escape.” <b>DM</b>\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>This story first appeared in our weekly Daily Maverick 168 newspaper, which is available countrywide for R29.</em></p>\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1980803\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/DM-16122023-001-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"947\" />\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-12-24-grinch-of-the-year-julius-malema/poty-front-cover2-2/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1983310\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1983310\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/POTY-Front-Cover2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"949\" /></a>",

"description": "Convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester and his accomplice Nandipha Magudumana were extradited to South Africa from Tanzania on 13 April 2023. They were on the run for almost a year.\r\n\r\nIn October 2022, the Inspecting Judge for Correctional Services, Justice Edwin Cameron wrote to Minister of Correctional Services Ronald Lamola:\r\n\r\n“There are indications that, with the collusion of G4S employees and others, a fire was staged in the single cell of one Thabo Bester (the notoriously named so-called ‘Facebook rapist’) and a corpse was smuggled into the cell with the objective of faking inmate Bester’s death and facilitating his escape.”\r\n\r\nBester was arrested in Tanzania along with his associate Nandipha Magudumana on 7 April, eleven months after his escape. But it appears that efforts to apprehend him only started on 24 March.\r\n\r\nThis was after details of Bester’s escape were uncovered by GroundUp.\r\n\r\nAccording to a source who worked at the prison at the time of Bester’s escape, the cell where Bester was kept was on the second floor of the prison. Next to this cell, there is a door that leads down to the exit. “It seems that he would have been able to escape through those doors,” the source said.\r\n\r\nThese doors can only be opened by the control room, the source explained.\r\n\r\nBester has been widely dubbed the \"Facebook rapist\" by the media. He used the social media platform to lure women with claims that international modelling scouts were interested in them.\r\n\r\nHe would then rape them and rob them using a knife. He also murdered at least one of his victims.\r\n\r\nIn 2012, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for these crimes.",
